I can see how all of the white space bothers you, but I do like a bit of white space on my layouts! It allows you a place for your eyes to rest a bit from all of the information we tend to add. What if you added your journaling to a 3\"x 4\" journaling card and added it next to the photo of the birthday boy? Then you could add a little more embellishment to the bottom left photo to balance the addition of the card.
