Yarn 101

Thanks so much for your quick reply with suggestions, Hannah. I think I'm stitching into the last stitch on each row incorrectly once I turn it around and begin down the next row....if I'm making sense? but not certain what I'm doing wrong....
don't know if this photo helps...sad 'cause this is a beauty comparatively speaking. recommendations? pull it out and start over?

I think I've figured it out now...
I'm glad you may have figured it out! Just in case, I'll point out one thing -- the positioning on your first stitch could be what is throwing you off. See how most of the stitches in the middle of the needle go over the needle, but have a bump at the bottom going horizontally across ? That bump is the stitch from the previous row.
On the stitches you have at the start of the needle, you'll see that same bump, but it will be more open and sometimes that confuses people just starting out. If you pull your yarn around to the back of the needle *without crossing it over the needle or making any loops*, you should see that bump tighten up a bit just like those other horizontal bump stitches. You want to only go through the part of the stitch that goes over and around the needle -- just like when you do any other stitch on that row.
I'll post a photo tomorrow when I have better light to illustrate!
