Hi everyone, Cathy Zielske here for Big Picture Classes to talk to you a little bit about my new mini workshop, Ten Tips for Better Type.

Let me start with a story that goes something like this: in 2002, while working as a graphic designer I stumbled upon what was to me a little-known hobby called scrapbooking. The idea of combining photos and stories and good design felt like the mother ship of all hobbies had finally found me and called me home. One of my most favorite parts of this new found love was that I could use my skills as a designer to include typography on all of my pages.

I love type almost as much as I love telling stories and taking pictures, and the one thing I can tell you is that using type well on your scrapbook pages is a skill that can be learned and then practiced over and over again.

I’ve seen a lot of darling scrapbook pages over the years through my work in this industry, and I will tell you the one place where I always see a bit of room for improvement: the type on the layouts. Maybe the journaling font is too big, or too small. Maybe the title font doesn’t work so well with the journaling. Maybe there are one too many spaces after periods. The list goes on and on.

I decided to put together a practical list of my top 10 tips to help scrapbookers create better type for their pages and this workshop is designed to share that information with you!

If you’re looking to learn how to turn a font into a dingbat and then into a rubber stamp, this class is not for you. But, if you want to understand how to make a journaling block look polished, readable and classic, then I’ve got the nuts and bolts basics of type waiting for you to come on in and soak it up.

Through a 45-minute video presentation and a class layout assignment, you’ll learn the tips and get a chance to apply them yourself. Included are step by step videos demonstrating some of the most important tips from the list of ten.

If you’re ready to master type, I encourage you to join me and share in the typography love. Your scrapbook pages will look better and stand the test of typographic time.

Hope to see you in class!
