Tuesday, 08 March 2011 [Thanks mom!] So I'm taking an Intro to Psychology class this semester and though a lot of it is common sense some of the stuff I have learned has been a real eye-opener. I was recently working as sort of a live-out nanny for this couple that had a two year old and a new born. They were a nice couple who seemed to have good (if not sometimes strange) ideals about raising kids and I felt it would be a good environment for me to work in. As time progressed I noticed that it was getting harder to look after the kids due to a number of reasons, but the most important being that the parents just didn't raise them the way I would have. Now given I'm not a mother, but I've been around enough kids and parents in my lifetime to get an idea of how it's done. Not to mention I think I was raised pretty well myself. Some of the things we have been learning in my psych class are related to early child development and how temperament can be inherited and creating bonds is extremely important and influential. As my teacher is listing the different kinds of effects and extrapolating on how the positive and negative effects can be influenced or prevented and I start analyzing and comparing myself I came to a conclusion. My mom is awesome! She raised me through a divorce, a move across the country, and a new marriage and I would have to say I am amazingly well-adjusted. I am secure, confident in relationships, capable of intimacy and can handle difficulties well. Not to say I'm perfect, far from it! Goodness knows I can be stubborn as hell, I'm one heck of a procrastinator and I'm not exactly the neatest person 100% of the time, but considering some of the hardships she was going through when I was little she did a really good job of fostering and maintaining a loving and caring environment for me to grow up in so I would have all the tools I needed to be who I am today.
