Wk 9: portraits posed versus candid
This has been my week. I love portraits a lot but I find my best ones are candid. This past week, I visited my brother as he is in a NICU for a severe spinal cord injury. He currently is paralyzed but we don't know how much. After my nieces snuggled with their daddy, I asked my SIL if she had snuggled with him yet and she said no. I encouraged and helped her get in and I took the top photo. While they relaxed and we all chatted, I noticed this tender moment between them and without asking I took the photo. To me, the bottom photo is perfect. It's candid and it's so true of their relationship and who they are.

I was very self conscious taking the second photo but I love the way they are resting together and she is holding his hand. He can't move but in this photo I feel like it captures their future, that after rehab (he moved to rehab today- yea!), he will move and be able to hold her hand on his own. The lighting isn't ideal nor perfect but the moment capture is tender and beautiful which I believe is what makes candids so powerful.
