Day 10 - evening
Well my evenings are certainly different now compared to when the children lived at home. Then they followed a predictable routine, whereas now they are totally unpredictable with no routine what’s so ever!
When the children were little, I worked 2 nights a week, so was always at home to collect them from school and the evening routine. Each day I cooked a proper evening meal and pudding, which we ate at 17.00hrs when Dad came home from work. After tea was playtime followed by bath time. As the babies were all breast fed, bathing was dad’s role – one he loved and was very protective of. After bath was book time - lots of them always snuggled up in bed, which was sometimes too comforting, as dad or I would invariably fall asleep before the children. TV’s were not allowed in their bedrooms.
But now that the children have left home and I have changed my job from nights to day shifts our evenings are free to follow what ever we feel like. My working days end very late – I don’t arrive home until 18.30 – 19.00hrs and if I have not put something for tea in the slow cooker, we end up with a snack, eating out or takeaways!
As I go away walking each month, quite a few evenings are spent alone in hotel rooms, recovering from a big walk and logging my geocaching finds.
When Steven and I are at home together, evenings are rarely spent in the same room, as each dislikes what the other watches on TV. So my evenings are spent in my craft room scrapbooking, on the computer, planning walking routes, or in the kitchen baking delicious cupcakes, while he watches football on the telly.
But one major change occurs at 21.30 each night. This used to signal the start of the second part of my day – my night shift at work, but now I cannot keep my eyes open past this time. So after our bath, Steven and I are tucked up in bed by 22.00 with our books and asleep by 22.15!
