Day 8 transportation
Day 8 transportation
I love cars and driving – Steven hates both, so we balance each other very well. We often joke that he only married me so that he would never have to drive anywhere! My enjoyment of driving came about, as it was the only way to stop my terrible travel sickness. If I drive I don’t get sick – it’s as simple as that! I make all the car decisions in our family – what car to have, when to change them, but also to pay for them! Steven comes along to the garage with me just for show, as the car salesmen hate dealing with women. So Steven acts like he is in the driving seat – when in fact I have already decided! Our present car is a Honda Jazz and I love it. It was slightly more expansive than I wanted to pay, but after test-driving a few others, nothing else compared and as I drive so much I wanted the experience to be enjoyable so the Jazz it was. I think we will stay with Honda from now on. I drive far too many miles really – I clocked 23,000 in my first year with the Jazz. Often these trips are to see the children in their respective towns or my sister in Herts, but mostly driving to my walking, geocaching and photography expeditions. The increasing cost of fuel is cramping my driving style a bit. My other favourite form of transportation is taking the train. I quite enjoy siting back and letting the train take the strain. I think my love of trains came from my grandfather who was a train driver and lived close to the railway line. When we were little we would go to his house and when we heard a train coming we would dash out and stand on the railway bridge and be enveloped in the steam from the train. This is one of my most endearing memories from my childhood. I still get quite excited by steam trains today and as a surprise treat for our Silver wedding anniversary, Steven booked a trip on a steam train to Stratford Upon Avon complete with breakfast on the way out and after spending the day exploring Shakespeare’s birth place – we travelled back enjoying a delightful afternoon tea. It was a very special day out.
