day 7 - a day early as I have to go to work! Journalling for day
My work is as a midwife. I trained between1982 – 1983, which means I have been working as a midwife for 30 years and I still enjoy it – so it must have been the right career choice. All this time has been at the ******* Hospital, on the Consultant labour ward, ante natal & post natal wards, midwife led unit and community . But 18 months ago I was transferred to the ******* – a move I was dreading, but in fact am enjoying it so much that I have surprised myself - it’s like a new lease of life. I work as a community midwife travelling to patients’ homes to look after them and their new babies. Supporting women and their families when they sometimes don’t have a happy outcome to their pregnancies. I also run 2 antenatal clinics each week in the local GP’s surgeries, so I get to know my women and their families very well. I arrived at ******* at the worst possible time, with the heaviest snowfall for many years – so trying to learn my way around, competing against slippery roads and snow falls was very traumatic – but now I nearly feel like a local and only have to use my Sat Nav occasionally. I am meeting many new challenges – social deprivation, non English speakers, women who smoke or take street drugs – so it all keeps me on my toes and learning lots of new things – even after 30 years! My days are very long, I start work at 08.00hrs and often am not home until 6 or 7 in the evening, but I would not change it for the world. Oh and I work with the loveliest girls ever.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - "YAY for midwives!" I have two friends who are midwives and you all do a fantastic job - I couldn't handle all those expectant women and panicky first-time mums! Thank goodness you all can... ;o)
