What
do I need to understand about design?
Technically, nothing to start out. But you need to accept
the fact that learning design goes hand-in-hand with completing
all assignments, even if they aren't your usual style
of scrapbooking.
How
much time should I expect to complete the weekly assignments?
That depends on how fast you scrapbook! There will be
three layout assignments each week designed to highlight
whatever area of design we are focusing on. Plan on two
to three hours a week. This is in addition to setting
aside the time to listen to the audio/slideshow presentations,
which will not run longer than an hour. However, if you
aren't able to finish the assignments, you will have all
the information you need in the weekly handout to get
caught up when you are able. Further, the classroom itself
will remain open one month following the final day, to
give students time to download all class materials. After
that, students may request a 7-day pass to the materials
at any time at no cost.
Are
you going to review the use of design software?
The short answer is no. This class will touch on a few
general topics, but overall, this course is not about
software.
Will
I be able download and save the weekly slide shows?
No, the weekly slide shows are streaming video files.
However, you can download a PDF of the slides and full
transcript of each week's presentation.
Do
I need to buy the recommended binder and other supplies
for this class?
No. At Big Picture, we always encourage students to make
substitutions where appropriate. It is recommended that
you have similar products on hand to store the work you
will be creating. In fact, this binder serves more as
a gathering place or portfolio to house your assignments,
rather than a traditional scrapbook. You are free to simply
do the layout assignments and save them in your own already
existing albums.
I
only scrapbook 12 x 12. Will there be sketches to show
me how to adapt the other layout sizes presented in class?
No. However, you're welcome to convert designs to fit
your needs, but the sketches and measurements will be
size specific each week.
Will
the students have access to Cathy during the class?
Yes! Students will be able to ask Cathy questions in a
special section set up on the message board called "Ask
Cathy," as well as have direct email access to her.
Cathy will be answering questions Monday through Friday,
from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
I
participated in DYL in 2008? Will I be able to take the
new class as an alumni?
Yes - DYL 2008 students will be able to enroll in the
current session at a reduced rate. An email will be sent
to all former DYL students prior to the start of registration
with full details on how to enroll! Please
note: this is the exact same class as the 2008 session
with the addition of digital templates.
