[ AmySJ ]
Goodmorning
[ Brenda in Sunny So Cal ] Not so sunny and... cleaning after a
child with the stomach flu
[ AmySJ ] Never fun!
[ AmySJ ] DH has left the building (Ok House) Sent him on his merry
way to go to a hunting thing with Dr. Deer.
[ nonnysbooks ] Good morning everyone
[ Brenda in Sunny So Cal ] DH still sleeping...
[ nonnysbooks ] After the chat, Nonny is off to go buy some seeds
to get started for my porch planter, and then putting some music
in my scraproom.
[ AmySJ ] DH would normally be sleeping but he was awake early-
knew he'd have a fun day. Walking in the woods at the SFA Wildlife
Research Center- a day filled with nothing but thinking about hunting.
[ cgull1 ] Hello . . . just got my category boxes in just in time
to work on my dividers and such. STILL deciding on colors though.
I bought black WRKM but can't decide if I want to go with shades
of blue or pink, purple, blue, green. Hmmm . . .
[ italgal ] Good morning, ladies...
[ MelissaTX ] Hello from sunny Texas.
[ AmySJ ] I'll be here on the computer organzing pics. If I ever
get out of 2008 I'll be happy.
[ cgull1 ] Is anyone addicted to the Forums?
[ italgal ] I hear ya, AmySJ!
[ AmySJ ] Me- but don't tell my bosses please!
[ nonnysbooks ] Addicted? How about obsessed?
[ italgal ] cgull1, I am currently enrolled in 3 classes...by the
time I read each of their forums, there's no time for classwork
;)
[ AmySJ ] Mind you my pics are already pared down- 2008 has 2600
pics in it, Beyond that no year has more than 1000 (most about half
that) except one with 1500. I know it's going to get easier.
[ LyciaK ] Hi, everyone!
[ sassyscrapper ] I'm trying to figure out the category drawers....i'm
26 and not married with kids...I have 6 siblings that are all married...do
i do the us category as just me? adn the people category to include
the rest of my family?
[ LyciaK ] AmySJ - where is the SFA Wildlife Research Center?
[ cgull1 ] I find myself checking in the Forums too much when I
should be working on my stuff for the week. But I can do it while
on the couch. :-)
[ sassyscrapper ] oops..no kids
[ AmySJ ] Nacogdoches- well actually out in the middle of no where
outside of Nacogdoches County. East Texas- up off Highway 59
[ Leora ] GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!
[ sassyscrapper ] Amy...any suggestions?
[ cgull1 ] italgal--I wouldn't be able to keep up with that much!
I teach college classes online so one class at a time will have
to do for me. This is my first though. Really like it.
[ Sabine H ] sassyscrapper - i'd say yes. You've got the right idea.
[ LyciaK ] Wow...I'm in East Texas too...about 45 minutes North
of Nac. Small world!
[ sassyscrapper ] Thanks!
[ nonnysbooks ] good morning Stacy
[ AmySJ ] Lycia- we're in Garrison. The Center is between Trawick
and Cushing off 204.
[ stacy julian ] You girls ROCK. I forgot to post a reminder and
look at you, all here and ready to go!
[ LyciaK ] When I saw SFA, I immediately thought of Nacogdoches,
but didn't know what state you were in :)
[ MelissaTX ] sassyscrapper - IMO, the us category is just you and
your siblings etc in the people you love. It is just DH and me in
my Us category and everyone else in the poeple.
[ LyciaK ] We're in Gary.
[ stacy julian ] I was answering questions on my forum and lost
track of time ... how are we this morning? How goes the customization
of your categories??
[ cgull1 ] Amy SJ It will get easier. I'm still trying to FIND all
my digital pics from the last 8 years or so in the old laptops and
such. I wasn't too good at keeping the organized. That's why I"m
here, though, right? :-)
[ AmySJ ] Sassy- I think it depends. How much do you scrapbook them,
see them etc. You could make All About Us just you. Or your family.
[ MelissaTX ] Small world - we moved back to Dallas area from SFA
three years ago after I finished my MBA.
[ italgal ] cgull1, I am in no way keeping up with all 3 classes
(LOM being the exception)...I am planning to use our forever access
to get caught up, on my own time... Yeah for Forever Access!!!
[ AmySJ ] Yup Cgull- thankfully during my scrapbooking hiatus I'd
already gotten all my digi in one place and pared down.
[ nonnysbooks ] I went through another box of photos last night
(from the 70s) and was brought to tears. I found a golden nugget....a
picture of both my kids, dh and I, my parents, both my grandmothers
and my grandfather. I didn't think I had any pics of both kids with
my grandparents.
[ AmySJ ] LOL Melissa I met DH at SFA, we moved to Corpus Christi,
and then back to Nac.
[ cropnmom ] as I continue to triage my photos, I find I'm coming
up with subcategories I hadn't thought about.
[ stacy julian ] nonny - so happy for you. Love those extra special
pictures that become so special with time!
[ RBH ] Would you put grandchildren in the US drawer or with extended
family in the PEOPLE drawer?
[ cgull1 ] Forever access is cool!
[ italgal ] Stacy...to move forward to the next lessons with triaged
photos...what would you say is the MINIMUM number of photos we should
have triaged in our CD??
[ Sabine H ] Stacy... i'm looking forward to getting the bubble
charts done and beginning the customization process... the lists
we did in the last lesson will be a big help.
[ sassyscrapper ] Stacy...I'm not married and no kids...would you
say that I should use the Us category for just me(and my dogs!)
adn the people category for my parents and 6 siblings who are all
married?
[ LyciaK ] If it makes you feel any better, I'm just starting with
2009! There was so much discussion back & forth last year
about iPhoto, that I never could commit. But this year, thanks to
Kayla, I'm taking the plunge!!!
[ noell ] I set up the LOM system when the book came out but my
category drawers have not been effective for me. That part is finally
starting to click now! I'm so happy!
[ colleenkroe ] Um, if it's possible to be behind in a SJ class,
I am.
[ cgull1 ] What treasures, nonny!
[ colleenkroe ] I just started doing seasonal folders last week.
:-(
[ stacy julian ] "cropnmom,<br />
note any subcategories you *think* you might want to add to your
drawers, but be careful adding them. When I get an idea for a new
category, I wait until I have 10 or 15 pictures that I would put
there before I actually make a new card. This way you won't end
up with too many categories!"
[ cgull1 ] Cool, cropnmom. I've started planning mine out this week
and suspect I'll find what you have . . . that other categories
emerge with the pictures.
[ Ann in FL ] I've decided I need to work on digital instead of
printed pictures and have the digital pictures somewhat in categories.
Have been considering changing from CM Memory Manager to PSE and
experimenting with that this week.
[ Leora ] Stacy, do you feel free to "use up"
pics from your category drawers or are you stingy in using them?
Does that make sense?
[ stacy julian ] "colleenkroe,<br />
Not possible to be behind ... as long as you are moving forward.
So glad you are here!"
[ colleenkroe ] Thanks Stacy. :-)
[ MelissaTX ] Hi Stacy! I set up my category divider cards and subcategory
cards yesterday based on my library lists and bubble charts. I only
had about 25 photos triaged, but am now making progress with the
triaging and have over 100 photos pulled from my storage binders
and a cold storage box from 2002 (I had already scrapped that year,
so triaged the extras that fit my categories).
[ AmySJ ] I think keywording my what and where has really helped
me think about sub-categories and things I routinely take pics of
et. Like those of DH driving while I'm in the passenger seat- there's
at least one from every trip and tons from just driving around.
[ cgull1 ] LyciaK I have iPhoto, too. Love it! I've been working
on non digital stuff in the last couple of weeks though.
[ nonnysbooks ] RE: Grandkids....I have one grandson and the prospect
of more grandchildren is far out on the horizon, therefore, my grandson
is going in my Us drawer. Although my kids are 30 and 33, they are
still using the revolving door at our house. I don't see me moving
them out of "Us" for the foreseeable future.
[ colleenkroe ] Stacy, I have a question. I was married before for
a LONG time and now have been with my current husband for four years
(married for 8 months). What do I do with all of those older photos
with my ex's family, events, etc?
[ ajohnson ] Stacy - Any thoughts on what to do with pictures of
friends/kids i.e. school pictures, grad pictures and/or christmas
pictures. How do you incorporate these in your system
[ noell ] I'm using the CM Power Sort box for my category drawers
(at least I have been for now) and last night I think I figured
out how to make them work better for me. I'll share when they're
done (in case I'm wrong, lol).
[ stacy julian ] Yay MelissaTX -- this sounds great. What are some
of your favorite subcategories that you discovered via your lists
and bubble charts? Anyone can answer!
[ cropnmom ] Stacy, I will keep that in mind. Oddly, one of the
categories coming forward is cemeteries. We used to pay annual visits
on memorial day, and now that we're in NJ (where my ancestors settled)
I find we are still adding cemetery photos. I am thinking a category
would make more sense than 8 LO of cemetery photos
[ AmySJ ] I felt behind last week because I didn't feel like I had
a chance to move forward... totally nutty week. Out of touch with
classes etc. Feeling much better now that things are bit more normal
[ noell ] nonnybrooks - I like that. I like that you're making the
US drawer work for the way your relationships really are.
[ AmySJ ] Subs- Caves (that's a new one I added but realize I'll
be adding to it as I go back with my pics)
[ colleenkroe ] Knowing which photos to focus on (current, vs. using
ones from the past with trips with the ex, etc.) will make a big
difference on what subcategories will be good for me.
[ AmySJ ] Another Sub- Clearsprings- a restaurant in town. . . I
didn't realize how many pics I had from there.
[ LyciaK ] I'm already seeing the benefits of iPhoto and I think
I'm really gonna love it too.
[ cgull1 ] Interesting about the cemeteries, cropnmom. We end up
at a lot with geocaching, yet also have visited several with family
history work.
[ stacy julian ] "colleenkroe,<br />
Not sure I'm qualified to answer this as I don't understand the
emotions tied up in two separate marriage/family dynamics, but ...
I think those pictures are part of your story, so I think they need
to be at least represented in your system -- don't feel like you
have to scrapbook everything, but do focus on relationships and
personalities and traditions and those kinds of things that grew
out of that time period in your life?!"
[ Sabine H ] noell.. would love to hear how you work the Power sort
box. I'm using one too and haven't started it yet.
[ LyciaK ] I guess I'm a "thinker" or a "muller".
I seem to have to put a lot of thinking time in on the front end
of a project before I can dive in.
[ scrappyangel ] yeah, I made it to a chat! I have missed every
one so far! I'm taking this as progress :)
[ MelissaTX ] My favorite subcategories - Toys (DH is a collector
and we have lots of photos of his collection plus people enjoying
these things when they come to visit) and Flowers (DH sends/brings
me flowers every week and there are tons of photos of these and
I love how they show up in the background of photos we take here
at home)
[ colleenkroe ] Thanks Stacy...I started to do that, but wasn't
sure. Seems so strange to revisit those things right now, you know?
I will do my best!
[ LyciaK ] Clearsprings - yum! - haven't been there in a LONG time.
[ AmySJ ] I've got a big sub category for cemetaries tow- in fact
it's split between Find a Grave and family.
[ Brenda in Sunny So Cal ] Back from cleaning up (for those late,
3 yearl old and stomach flu... fun not so sunny day here
[ Leora ] Oh, I like the Toys category! Fun!
[ cgull1 ] LyciaK . . . I do that sometimes, too, but then can work
quickly once I've made up my mind how to do it.
[ cropnmom ] cgull1, cemeteries are one of my favorite destinations
for daytrips now. discovering a lost "loved one"
is more exciting than I would ever have thought.
[ RBH ] I love trees and take lots of pics of them so I have a TREE
tag.
[ Leora ] Brenda, sorry about the flu--yuch!
[ noell ] Sabine H - I've customized the actual physical power sort
box just slightly. If it works I'll share pic's and an explanation!
[ stacy julian ] "LyciaK,<br />
Love that you are thinker ... but do know that with LOM you learn
so much by doing. Don't be afraid to try something. You can aways
back up and un-do something. OK?"
[ Brenda in Sunny So Cal ] For alumni out there (Stacy and Coaches
too) do you find the pictures from last year don't mean the same
this year?
[ AmySJ ] I like to anser find-a-grave requests and you find some
really poignant things. And it's something mom and I have done together.
Though I'll keep all those, I won't scrap most- I keep them in case
the full size images are ever requested.
[ LyciaK ] cgull1 - same here! Once I dive in, I make pretty good
progress.
[ colleenkroe ] I am excited about subcategories because I take
a lot of nature photos, but going through stuff, they don't really
have meaning to me outside of a trip or hike or event where I took
the photos. Weird. Not sure if I should just keep them with trips
or separate them out into hiking or nature or what.
[ artiste ] LyciaK, that's how I am when I do a layout. I have to
let it sit while the ideas come. I'll add a piece here and there
until it all comes together.
[ cgull1 ] I found we had Toys, too, but for our younger kids. My
husband almost needs one for GEAR.
[ Sabine H ] colleenkroe: I have a similar situation, and have kept
all the photos. I still keep in touch with my former inlaws and
will one day do a photoalbum scrapbook of the photos from that time
of my life for my daughter... (she asked me too as she wants to
see the stories of how her Dad and I met and all about her aunts
and uncles from when they were young... so I'll do what I can..
when time permits) I guess it will depend on how you feel about
that part of your life....
[ AmySJ ] Colleen- I've got the same thing. I'm looking forward
to seeing them all split into the sub-categores I created for nature
etc- different trips together at last in a meaningful way.
[ colleenkroe ] LOL, cgull1 - gear!
[ LyciaK ] Thanks, Stacy. I think one issue is how many times or
different methods I've tried. Hate to undo/redo. One thing I love
about LOM is that you encourage us to move forward without undoing
what has already been done.
[ cropnmom ] Colleenkroe, you and your mom rock for your find-a-grave
efforts.
[ Leora ] WE have a category for Magic!
[ noell ] colleenKroe - Sounds like you could do a layout about
the fact that you love to take nature photos...
[ AmySJ ] LOL- You should see my hunting stuff.
[ italgal ] Leora, that is an unusual category, to be sure!
[ cropnmom ] Stacy, I am finding a lot of great pix taken from behind.
I am seeing a future album from that perspective, but until then,
where should my subcategory go?
[ colleenkroe ] "I know Amy; I mean, I don't see myself doings
lots of nature pages on my own, right?<br />
<br />
Oh, Noell, that's a good idea! And them maybe I could get it out
of my system... !"
[ cgull1 ] One question I thought of as I worked on subcategories
. . . if a hobby is specific to a person, would that just go in
their All About Us subcategory (and make a special subcategory for
it?). Right now, my husband has a history with amateur radio and
photography, but the rest of us don't . . . just make a section
in his All About Us part? I know he has high hopes for the kids,
though!
[ colleenkroe ] I love the idea of a perspective album, cropnmom!
[ ajohnson ] Brenda - I often find that what I originally thought
I was going to do with the pictures when I first took them and stored
them in binders changes pretty fast, especially if I have not scraped
them right away.
[ annt ] I love iPhoto...what is the best PC equivalent? Or can
it be purchased for PC?
[ cropnmom ] Sorry, that find a grave reference was for AmySJ! oops.
[ colleenkroe ] iPhoto is only for the Mac. Not sure what the PC
equivalent would be.
[ sassyscrapper ] Any thoughts Stacy? Keep the us drawer just me?
and the people drawer about my parents and siblings and their families?
[ Leora ] Brenda, I am not sure if this is what your asking, but
one of the things that has surprised me most in this process is
that the pictures I value most looking back are not the ones I would
have expected when I first took them or had them printed.
[ AmySJ ] I knew what you meant :) It's really interesting to wander
old cemetaries
[ colleenkroe ] That's okay cropnmom. I actually do have lots of
grave photos as well, but haven't gotten to doing anything with
them. They're from trips, so I will have trouble sorting them out.
[ stacy julian ] "Brenda,<br />
You just hit on one of the most important aspects/filters of LOM.
Yes, sometimes pictures lose "importance" over
time. That's why we have storage binders to allow us the time to
browse and skip over and work out of order, so that we use our precious
time to 'honor' the stories that feel most important. Just as some
pictures feel less important over time, others (and you can't predict
this) become more important over time. When I say "We have
exactly enough time to scrapbook our most important memories"
this is what I'm referring to. It's 100% OK to skip over or not
scrapbook some of the pictures in your storage binders, that you
were "sure" you would scrapbook. After 3, 4, or
5 five years, if you've skipped over the pics from the 2nd grade
field trip, then triage 2 or 3 of them into your drawers, remove
the others to cold storage and know that the system is working for
YOU! Sorry ... so long."
[ noell ] "cgulli - that has been my question too! Things we
do stuff like hobbies keep moving back-and-forth between my Things
and my Us drawers/albums.<br />
<br />
I love the idea of putting them in subcategories behind the Us people.
Wonder what Stacy thinks of that?"
[ LyciaK ] colleenkroe - you're certainly not alone. I seem to have
a "split" in my photos: pre-1999 (16+ years) or
post-1999...that would be pre-divorce and post-divorce. Pre-divorce
includes time when the kids were small, but much easier to work
on the post-divorce that includes a very happy remarriage.
[ cgull1 ] Cropnmom--It is cool to visit cemeteries and make connections.
A few years ago, I visited a town about 4 hours from my hometown
(18 from where I was living at the time) to visit cemeteries. I
couldn't find the place and stopped at the library to ask for directions.
The librarian asked what I was looking for and send me down to her
mom's house to chat with my grandpa's cousin--no idea! She had such
a neat perspective and knew how to pronounce all the names! :-)
[ AmySJ ] Iphoto is Mac only. I think the PC equiv. isn't the word.
It's buying software (or the free version) based on what you do.
What type of camera do you have, do you edit photos, do you envision
paper scrapbooking etc, you budget.
[ AmySJ ] cgull- yes. . . you know you are into family history when
the highlights of vacations are that you get to stop at a family
cemetary. I grew up with that and now we do it. (Wonder if mom could
give me so pics of us doing that as a child)
[ cgull1 ] Collenkroe--I wondered the same with nature photos out
of context. My husband has lots of flower pics . . . hmm . . . and
lots of castles. He lived in Germany when he started getting into
photos more.
[ Brenda in Sunny So Cal ] I have been groing trough my drawers
from last year and the pictures I placed last year don't make much
sence this year. They don't seem relevant not even within the context
of the category or subcategory they are in... This is where I got
stuck last year... It was probably a better question for the chat
last week but I was sick so I slept trough it...
[ Leora ] My parents aren't living and I have a subcat for Arlington
Cemetery in my drawers, but I never feel quite right scrapping those
pics. Maybe someday...
[ cropnmom ] cgull1 and AmySJ :)
[ colleenkroe ] Thanks LyciaK. Good way to think of it. I think
I'm trying to focus on girfriends, my family, etc. I have no kids,
but what to DO with all those photos of Hawaii and stuff with him!
[ cgull1 ] AmySJ--that's cool (find-a-grave)!
[ colleenkroe ] Yeah, cgull1. Out of context just doesn't work for
some photos, it seems.
[ colleenkroe ] Cuz I love Hawaii, but the ex, not so much...LOL!
[ annt ] Stacy, in living with your digital frames...have you found
that looking at the photos frequently has in any way lessened your
excitement about scrapping them? Just wondering if this will happen
for me. Once I started a blog, I found that after I had put the
pictures on my blog, I didn't feel as excited about putting them
in a layout. Maybe crazy...just hoping I don't dull my enthusiasm
before I get them scrapped...anyone know what I mean?
[ AmySJ ] Leiora- something that helped me is a historical perspective
on gravesites- as I go through my DH's family pics- the really old
ones- I find all sorts of pics of gravesites with flowers on them-
from the funeral. Not something I'd ever have thought to do (and
don't know that I would today) but obviously it was something they
wanted to capture.
[ stacy julian ] "Noell,<br />
sorry .. I was so caught up answering the last question that I may
have missed the real question here, but when it comes to hobbies,
etc .. and where they go, they can go either place. For example
when I'm triaging soccer pictures, I generally put one or two in
Clark's tabs because soccer is HIS sport, but I also put 1 or 2
in the Things/Sports because 'we' do soccer. A page about Clark
playing soccer with pictures from several years (and pics may come
from multiple places) would probably go in his album, but a page
about Saturday is Soccer day (that features pics of several little
boys) would probably go in the Things We Do album. Does that help?
Plant those very flexible pictures in both places!!"
[ cgull1 ] Tell us more about your Magic, Leora!
[ LyciaK ] colleenkroe - Photoshop? Maybe replace your ex with a
nice picture of someone like Hugh Jackman? (just kidding) Truthfully,
all my pics from that time are sitting in their magnetic albums
and I just haven't had the inclination to work with them. Maybe
someday...
[ Leora ] Amy, that is interesting thanks. I am thankful to have
a place to keep these pics for now...
[ colleenkroe ] LOL Leora! Matt Damon... :-)
[ nonnysbooks ] sassy, I would think that if you are still closely
connected with your parents you could include them in your Us drawer,
but perhaps if siblings have moved out of the area they might be
in the People we Love drawer....just a newbie perspective...but
I think I'm picking up that it depends on how you see the relationship
[ Leora ] I have our Magic pics split between my husband's tab in
Us and Making Magic in Things.
[ AmySJ ] Speaking of interesting- and this has nothing to do with
this class- this song line was just "you took to his jaw
line" (talking about fighting) LOL! No one's hear to share
that line with.
[ noell ] Yes! Thank you, Stacy, that totally makes sense to me
now! (about the hobbies belong to one person, but also to the rest
of us, indirectly).
[ Leora ] Colleen, Help. I am embarrassed. I am not getting the
Matt Damon reference...
[ colleenkroe ] I am interested in hearing about the subcategory
of people's US drawers for anyone that is married no kids. Anyone?
[ ajohnson ] colleenkroe- do you have children. Personally I would
keep them for their sakes but if not, I would keep the ones that
have a story or meaning and dump the rest. I would most definitely
keep them if they were of their father.
[ AmySJ ] Colleen- I just have me, and DH, and then Us together.
[ colleenkroe ] Oh. I'd use Matt Damon instead of Hugh Jackman to
photoshop out my ex out of my old photos. funny.
[ Sabine H ] colleenkroe; I'd pull out my fav Hawaii photos and
use those at some point... 'places I love'? and maybe just put his
in cold storage or in a separate box so you know they are there
but they don't hit you in the face when you least expect it. That's
where mine are for now.
[ stacy julian ] "annt,<br />
So, digital frames, blogs, etc ... most of the time I recognize
the photos I really WANT to scrapbook, but if the opposite is true
... embrace that! If you are living with your pictures and blogging
about them, that counts! We no longer live in a time when we are
able to scrapbook all or even most of our pictures and frankly,
no one wants that many scrapbook pages. We live in a time when we
are required to do the 'emotional' work of valuing some of our pictures
with the perspectives and stories that really matter now and in
the future. Pay attention to the feelings that you have that either
guide you away from or toward certain pictures -- that is your heart
talking!"
[ ajohnson ] Colleen - I have no children. In our Us drawer I have
All about Ann, All About Warren, Together Forever, Auntie Annie,
Uncle Warren.
[ Susan ] ...isn't that the truth!! Years of baseballl, traveling
baseball, friends made from that, time spent with sibling that doesn't
play but is there---usually bringing a friend, places we traveled
to, unexpected ventures from it. The list goes on and on!
[ MelissaTX ] For those of you with pre-divorce photos, I'm going
to do a post after this chat about the album I did to help me process
my pre-divorce photos. (It would be too long of post for here -
I'll post it in chit chat for anyone interested.)
[ colleenkroe ] Thanks Sabine. Good idea. I will maybe do that.
[ Leora ] Are any of the digital photo frames battery operated?
[ Leora ] Are any of the digital photo frames battery operated?
[ stacy julian ] Wait .. did I just read Matt Damon. I'm in!
[ adklife ] I'm really interested in getting the stories/photos
"out there" so they are accessible. For example,
digital photo frames, a basket of mini albums, framed pieces for
the wall, coffee table books, etc... Anyone have any different ways
to share things in "home decor" or online?
[ Leora ] Not sure why it posted twice
[ colleenkroe ] "Oh, as auntie and uncle! that's a good division.<br
/>
Thanks, ajohnson."
[ AmySJ ] Colleen- So far, I haven't added my parents etc who actually
now live closer or my "nephew" and "neice"
and their parents who are like family but not family. But, They'll
be easily found in the People We Love with subs. . . so really I
don't think it matters which one they go in. . . just as long as
you know where to find them. Eventually the albums will have volumes
for them anyway.
[ LyciaK ] MelissaTX - sounds good.
[ colleenkroe ] Thanks MelissaTX!
[ LyciaK ] Oh, Stacy...what will Geoff think ;) ?
[ colleenkroe ] Gotta get me to see Green Zone this weekend, Stacy!
[ colleenkroe ] Sorry. I'll focus now.
[ stacy julian ] "adkife,<br />
love this question! To me this is LOM -- a comprehensive system
for filtering and using your photos and sharing your stories across
a broad spectrum of channels (wrong word, but hopefully you know
what I mean!)"
[ colleenkroe ] Thanks Amy. yeah, it seems like so many subcats
could go in different drawers.
[ stacy julian ] Geoff knows. I only have eyes for him and Matt!
[ annt ] Thanks, Stacy...I loved the tree analogy in the audio lesson
this week, by the way..."don't lose the tree for the forest!"
Wrote it on the chalkboard in my entryway this morning. My KIDS
love the digital frames, even the 2 year old.
[ colleenkroe ] LOL!
[ LyciaK ] Stacy - LOL! (my husband is much the same with me &
Hugh)
[ stacy julian ] annt -- thanks! I was a bit worried about my crazy
analogies. It made sense to me, but I wondered if it would work?!
[ cgull1 ] We have decoupaged pictures on blocks for puzzles with
each side for a different family on my husband's side.
[ AmySJ ] You know last week's lists and asking DH those questions
was really interesting- I found some things out I didn't know. But
also it reminded me I need to do a Pete Rose layout (for which I've
no pics- perhaps an empty ballfield?) Cause DH and I have agreed
to disagree on that topic.
[ noell ] The analogies work for me, Stacy. Your audio recordings
are so helpful and so inspiring for me!
[ Leora ] My son is turning 13 this month. We will be out of town.
I am thinking about pulling all the pics from of Him from my highlight
folders to put on a digital frame to take with us.
[ nonnysbooks ] Stacy, sassy has asked twice about how she should
do her Us vs People We Love categories. Single, no kids, but 6 siblings.
[ colleenkroe ] Does anyone know if there's a MB post about what
subcategories you have in your category drawers yet?
[ adklife ] cgull1, cool. I like the hands on idea.
[ Sabine H ] Stacy... I LOVE your analogies. They help make sense
of things. (and I always use an analogy myself when I'm trying to
explain something to someone..)
[ AmySJ ] Stacy- your messages are what made me by an Iphone- well
not quite but when my smartphoen quit playing them while I was on
the road- that day was the last straw and I bought an Iphone the
next day.
[ italgal ] sorry, MB post??
[ stacy julian ] AmySJ - I always learn so much via questions and
interviews. I think in part because I live with *almost* all boys/men
and in less you ask, you just don't know! It's not like they offer
up much insight on their own!
[ colleenkroe ] It seems like for sassy, you could do a all about
me drawer instead of us and then have subs in there by that.
[ pennyscraps ] I am "behind" on my assignments.
Someone shout out a positive result from doing the triage exercise
to give me some MOJO. I am not "putting it off"
really - I just don't have the enthusiasm to start it.... So, friends,
give me some insight please.
[ AmySJ ] Stacy- exactly! LOL Do you know Facebook has helped with
that though. So many of his childhood friends are on there. As he
shares about who said what etc, I get little nuggets.
[ Lucy :) ] Sassy - I'm also single & have no kids. My categories
are "me", then in my "People who matter"
section I have sections for Grandparents & other ancestors;
Mum & Dad; My Brother; Friends
[ MelissaTX ] pennyscraps - I was struggling with the traige because
I was having trouble pulling photos, but after I set up my sub-categories
it was much more fun pulling photos to put them there! Have you
create your divider tabs yet?
[ noell ] Amy SJ - I love hearing how Facebook is helping you learn
about your husband! How cool!
[ artiste ] pennyscraps, read my post on the Lesson 3 forum ("I
Get It")
[ colleenkroe ] Lucy, that's what I was talking about - yes!
[ pennyscraps ] hmmm, honestly, no. I worked on them in the fall
when I self-implemented...I have been slammed at work and hope to
spend today playing "catch up"....
[ ajohnson ] Penny (Stacy, you might not like this response). Last
year I was in the same boat and I really did not get it. It really
helped to scrap some pages and the left over pictures where triaged.
I didn't do triage until months later.
[ pennyscraps ] Thank you Artiste. I will.
[ stacy julian ] nonny + sassy, sorry -- I often lose questions
in chats. I think you have to set up your category drawers for your
life right now. IMO US would be YOU(sassy) and your siblings/parents.
People We Love will likely have a categories for extended family,
friends and perhaps people you admire or learn from or just 'follow'
-- you can totally adjust your categories as you life/family changes
and unfolds. Does that help?
[ stacy julian ] MelissaTX, good point. Once you get customized
categories it is easier (and often more fun) to 'look' for pictures
to triage into them!
[ nonnysbooks ] understand the losing posts and questions, didn't
want to let the question get totally lost though since she had asked
it twice. Just trying to help.
[ ajohnson ] I agree with Melissa
[ italgal ] Stacy, asked this earlier, and I think it got "lost".
What is the MINIMUM number of photos you think should be triaged,
in order to move forward with future lessons in class??
[ colleenkroe ] Gotta get going to the gym ladies. Training to climb
Mt. Rainier! Have a great day!
[ LyciaK ] colleenkroe - WOW!
[ cgull1 ] colleenkroe Sounds like an achievement! Best wishes with
the training!
[ cropnmom ] ditto that wow. way to go, colleenkroe!
[ colleenkroe ] Thanks. Yes, I am waiting for it to be as glorious
as it sounds. LOL! Have a good one!
[ AmySJ ] Great Colleen!
[ nonnysbooks ] I'll be working on the bubble charts this afternoon
as the rain comes down, then start the category drawers. So far
most of my triaged pics will go in People We Love. I'm still in
film mode as far as shutter clicking goes (even though we now shoot
digital).
[ pennyscraps ] I think part of my problem is that I have my physical
file category drawers in an inconvenient place. I plan to move them
to a closet where they are more accessible today.
[ Becky C ] Stacy, I'm finding it hard to get started with the triaging.
I finally got pics into my storage binders, so I guess I just need
the push to get going!
[ stacy julian ] "italgal,<br />
I'm not going to give you a minimum. If you 'feel' like you understand
triage and you can see it's potential for creating connections (both
now and in the future) then I want you to listen to your heart.
It's hard for me to even give numbers like 100 and another 100,
etc.. but I've learned over the years that students need something
to work from. The number of pictures you "need"
to triage really stems from the number of pictures you have in storage
binders and the number of pictures not yet in storage binders that
you would like to 'seed' in your drawers now. Does that help?"
[ Ann in FL ] Am I going to be too far behind in class changing
programs and learning PSE? Pictures are all organized, in Seasonal
folders and rated in MM, but it is time consuming and challenging
knowing how to set up things in PSE with what is transferring there
as far as titles, notes, etc.
[ AmySJ ] Stacy- Colleen's upcoming accomplishment made me think
of a question. What kinds of things do you have in your accomplishments
subcategory for you and Geoff? (I currently can't think of a use
for it for me but would love to hear what you and others have)
[ AmySJ ] Ann- Does MM write your ratings to you photos?
[ pennyscraps ] The other thing I have noticed is that I have teenage
boys and a lot of my photos are NOT event related. They are me photographing
the boys - catching their faces and emotions. So, in effect, I don't
really know how to manage ANY of these random photos...
[ cgull1 ] pennyscraps--I just got the big category drawers a couple
of days ago. I think they will work well, but almost wish they were
more portable. Kudos to you for finding a place you'll use them
more.
[ italgal ] Thanks, Stacy...just wanted to be sure...
[ cropnmom ] My "accomplishments" is called "milestones".
it made it easier to add to, as hubby's grad was the only thing
there before.
[ stacy julian ] "Becky C -- Picture me gently pushing you.<br
/>
Does that help? I'm so happy you've got pictures in storage binders.
Think of that as a rest stop on a hike. Just because you made it
to the rest stop doesn't mean you don't or shouldn't keep hiking
to the summit. The view from both places is awesome!"
[ AmySJ ] Penny- I'm thinking that's their personality that you
are catching.
[ Ann in FL ] Amy, yes it does. It actually transfers most everything
but not to where you would want it in PSE.
[ theartsymom ] ann- i just learned pse8 since the class started
and it is not hard but time intensive. i STILL have not tagged everything-
but have rated 5 quarters.
[ stacy julian ] cropnmom, love "milestones"
[ Sabine H ] pennyscraps... would these photos of your boys go in
their personality section of your category drawers?
[ cgull1 ] AmySJ--I did a half marathon--achievement for me. I also
have advanced degrees. While I will have pictures in our Learning
Tab, I also consider these achievements.
[ Leora ] Me too--Milestones!
[ AmySJ ] Can you search by it in PSE- You could then find them
and apply changes to big things.
[ Annette33 ] I have caught bits and pieces of today's chat. Straightening
my classroom for your monthly crop, and running to the computer
frequently, lol.
[ Becky C ] Thanks Stacy. I have a lot to do this week.I am trying
so hard to keep up with the lessons.
[ scrappyangel ] so Stacy, should immediate family go into All About
Us even when there are 5 siblings 4 parents, 4 grandparents, and
10 nieces and nephews between the 2 of us? It just seems like a
lot once you include siblings and their families???
[ stacy julian ] Wow, losing lots of questions this morning!
[ pennyscraps ] Well - one shot I am thinking of is my boys standing
with their dad and dad taking a shot of a needed item from Target
with his iPhone. I shot that b/c hubby is so great to run errands
and I like the technology factor. But where would that pic go?
[ AmySJ ] Oh I like Milestones- that might work much better- LOL
DH is turning 40 soon. . . Possibly getting a new job.
[ theartsymom ] penny- about us.
[ Ann in FL ] Amy, think perhaps I will post to you on digital discussion
as to where I am struggling and how things are transferring.
[ stacy julian ] Becky and ALL, you're doing great. Just keep plugging
along!
[ Leora ] Stacy, there are a lot of us and you don't have any help
today. YOu are doing great!
[ MelissaTX ] Here are a couple of examples of items I will have
in my Accomplishments subcatgory: Photos from DH gaduation &
my graduation, photos of DH at work - for things like promotions
and recently helping to sell the company in a multibillion dollar
deal, photos of me dressed to do a presentation of research I completed,
photo of me teaching, etc
[ pennyscraps ] I understand "immediate family"
to be the ones that you share a roof with.
[ italgal ] Question: 5x7 vs 4x6 drawers - anyone...Is there any
benefit to using 5x7 drawers, if most of photos printed ar 4x6...will
the drawers be too large...or is it nice to have the extra room??
[ cgull1 ] Cool shot, pennyscraps. Would fit right in our family,
except the part about hubby running errands.
[ Annette33 ] I had an APS camera for a while, and have some panoramics
to sort, tough to store those
[ stacy julian ] "scrappyangel,<br />
This week's handout shares my categories and subcategories and you'll
see how I break down my family relationship photos. My siblings
and extended family relationships go in my People We Love drawers.
This is different for someone who is single. Just keep in mind that
as family dynamics change, so can category drawers. Do what feels
right and keeps your collection workable!"
[ ajohnson ] italgal - I have the 5x7 ones only because they were
free. They are bigger but the pictures seen to fit nicely in them.
I also don't store 5x7 picture in them
[ italgal ] Thanks, Ann...BTW, STILL enjoying all those Crop Talks
you gifted to me!!
[ Lucy :) ] For large photos, I popped a few office page protectors
in my binders (I don't know what you'd call them but they are plastic
pages that you would slip an A4/8.5x11 sheet in and put in a binder
)
[ ajohnson ] Italgal - I am glad.
[ just jeani ] italgal - i use 4x6 drawers and have a seperate set
of flat drawers (3stack) for enlargements 1 for current and one
for heritage and the other drawer is for photos I might want to
punch small faces from. The 5x7 drawers eat up a lot of real estate
and my studio is compact
[ Leora ] I keep one 8.5x11 page protector at the back of each storage
binder for the enlargements.
[ scrappyangel ] Stacy, that makes perfect sense. I think I missed
the single part and just focused on the no kids part since that
applies to me...thanks!
[ ajohnson ] One thing that helped me with categories and subcategory
subdivision is ask yourself "Where would I look for this
photo" or use your gut instinct. You can always change
later like Stacy stays.
[ stacy julian ] "pennyscraps,<br />
You said "I shot that because hubby is so good to ..."
it goes in his personality category! Listen to yourself talk and
go with the first thought, it's about him and then about technology.
If you have more than one "similar" photo to triage
then you can put them in two places, but listen to the 'order of
importance' you assign as you describe a photo to someone else.
Yes?"
[ Leora ] Do remember the "you can always change it later"
part. You really can!
[ pennyscraps ] OH VERY GOOD POINT Stacy. Thank you. LOVE THESE
CHATS.
[ LyciaK ] Leora - thanks for the reminder that "you can
always change it later". The most important thing is to
DO something :)
[ MelissaTX ] The "you can always change it later part"
has really helped me pull and place photos. I figure after I have
the system set up and "live with it for a while"
(as Stacy says), I can take some time to thumb back through my category
files and shuffle them if I need to.
[ just jeani ] love the idea of 8 1/2 x 11 page protectors. However
I have also found that my Pioneer pocket pages that came with my
SB will also hold 5x7s they will stick out a little bit, but they're
completely on the page. They will also accomodate a panoramic. You'll
notice that the dividers between the 3 pockets doesn't extend to
the edge so you can use this undivided space.
[ artiste ] If a photos are "triaged" does that
mean we have already found a connection? If so, where do we store
the connection? Or does it just mean that we have pulled them and
put them in category drawers for future connections?
[ italgal ] Very frustrated that all the recommended albums for
this class (8.5 x 11) are a quarter inch too tall for my bookshelves
in the living room. Anyone else have this trouble?? Suggestions??
Anyone aware of smaller profile 8.5 x 11 albums?
[ cropnmom ] since i use the wrmk 8x8 for storage, i use the 8x8
pages for 5x7s
[ sleepyhead ] italgal - are your shelves fixed? do you have the
option of moving them up a bit?
[ noell ] "Changing the subcategories - you just pick up the
tabbed divider and its pictures and move them from the old spot
to the new one. :) <br />
<br />
I need to see if my digital program is easy to customize like that
once I've assigned pictures to them."
[ stacy julian ] Change and shuffle are definitely a part of LOM
and category drawers. But you have to commit before you can change.
So, start and trust yourself and know it will all work out!
[ scrappyangel ] so if I am just finishing up with sorting photos
and am about 2 weeks behind in class, does anyone have any tips
of what I should do first so I don't get even further behind? I
am going to order my category drawers today if I can ever decide
between 4 X 6 and 5 X 7.
[ pennyscraps ] For 5x7's, you can actually fit them in sideways
behind the 4x6 if you use the Pioneer albums because the little
divider sleeve does not have a seam all the way to the edge. I have
just slipped my 5 x 7's into my Storage Binders.
[ Leora ] itagal...I wonder if you used regular binders (but nice
ones) instead of designated albums. Just a thought...
[ Brenda in Sunny So Cal ] ITALGAL: The pioneer are taller than
the the WRMK, that is what I use, I'll repost my picture from last
year on this same thing
[ sleepyhead ] Stacy - what is the 'bound book' you refer to in
the master bedroom on the blueprint?
[ MelissaTX ] italgal - I have made several theme albums just using
regular D-ring notebooks and I love them. I create a scrappy page
for the front cover insert and for the side.
[ italgal ] sleepyhead, they are fixed. Trying to decide how important
it is, to have my library albums in my living space. I really like
this idea, but...
[ sleepyhead ] may not be the same aesthetically, but have you thought
about perhaps stacking them horizontally - that way they could still
be in your space?
[ stacy julian ] "scrappyangel,<br />
Work on your lists and bubble charts, so you have customized index
tabs to put in your drawers when they arrive. Then just spend time
with your pictures and pay attention -- you'll know what to do!
And .. you're not behind. Remember that too!"
[ artiste ] I'm feeling very overwhelmed with how much of a disaster
my studio has become since I started this class. I gathered everything
scrapbook-related (included volumes of my mother's journals and
albums) and it's a disaster. There is no place for anything. Not
even scrapbooking! Any suggestions?
[ italgal ] Thanks for the suggestions of "regular"
binders. I was considering this...I guess I just needed permission
to go this route :)
[ Lucy :) ] I think I lead a very boring life because I have so
few categories!
[ stacy julian ] "sleepyhead,<br />
Photobooks that you can have made at Shutterfly and other places.
Just the idea that digital photo books can be a part of your LOM
output and I guess I put them in the Master bedroom because I would
choose to do a photo book when I want the ability to purchase additional
copies for my children to pass on, does that make sense??"
[ cgull1 ] artiste 15 minutes at a time . . . clear off a space
so you can work. :-) Cool to have all those journals! Maybe some
could be housed in another area until you need them.
[ sleepyhead ] artiste - I had the same problem - I took a few boxes
of older photos and memorabilia that I know I'm not going to get
to in this class and designated a spot in my MBR closet for my LOM
stuff that I just can't fit in my working space
[ just jeani ] decided yesterday as i was triaging that i need to
change my tabs in the cat drawers. I seem to be blurring the line
between US and People. A little fine tuning is needed now that I've
had clarification on where to draw the line. My oldest daughter
is in US, but her life after marriage is in PEOPLE (with her husband
and children).
[ scrappyangel ] I better go listen to lessons 3 and 4 then Stacy
because I don't know what you are talking about quite yet...but
thanks for the tips. It helps me to just try to focus on 1 portion.
Otherwise I get to overwhelmed and just give up.
[ noell ] sleepyhead - stacking albums horizontally can make them
bow. It's not safe for the pic's. Even worse if you scrapbook with
3-d items.
[ MelissaTX ] Lucy - fewer categories do not mean a boring life!!!!
These are photos, your life is so much broader than just what we
capture on the camera.
[ Brenda in Sunny So Cal ] LUCY: I think few categories is good,
it will give you a jumping off point and you will start seeing future
conections and categories.... I also have few categories at this
point just the basics
[ AmySJ ] Annette- I finished typing and then my computer shut down.
Panos I have tons of them. I have those in a shoebox type photo
box going the opposite way you normally would. Works pretty well.
(Mind you my plan is to scan and make them part of my digi storage
binders and category drawers.)
[ pennyscraps ] @ Artiste - I brought in a 6 foot table to stack
my stuff on so that I could have my "regular space"
clean for my regular work and as a staging area. Take a deep breath
and tackle a little bit of it at a time. I think you need a clear
"st
[ stacy julian ] "artiste,<br />
Disaster relief ... get some really big Rubbermaid bins and allow
yourself to put away from the journals, etc.. and stack these bins
up so you can clear some work/creative space. You need to be able
to make space and keep things close. I know it's hard -- remind
yourself how cool it is that you are attempting to reign everything
in!"
[ scrappyangel ] Has anyone found 5 X 7 divider tabs for the bigger
drawers? The ones on Highsmith are only 4 X 6
[ pennyscraps ] Okay everyone. Thanks for the positive energy. I
am going to MOVE the location of my drawers and just dive in. So
thankful "my bike" has training wheels and a posse
of riders with me. ;-)
[ stacy julian ] I do hope you will listen and read each lesson
as it is posted --even if you're 'not there yet' I think this can
really help you stay motivated and give you the perspective of where
we are headed!
[ Lucy :) ] artiste - you need to do this in small chunks! Box up
everything & put it in a closet or somewhere safe - then
work on 15 mins at a time. You can do an extra 15 mins if you are
enjoying it but don'ttake out more than you can work on in 15 mins!
[ sleepyhead ] Lucy you sound like the FLYlady :-)
[ MelissaTX ] Wow, this has been a busy chat. I think I've missed
a few things, but also gained some great ideas. Thanks Stacy &
everyone for participating. I'm off now to write my post about What
to do with Pre-divorce photos.
[ cropnmom ] sleepyhead, you read my mind!
[ AmySJ ] Just Jeani- I can see your dilemna- I organize my DH's
genealogy in families- and there comes a time I have to split a
person's life- while it makes since to do that with marriage there
due to the change in research- it doesn't make as much since when
you're talking about photos.
[ pennyscraps ] I think we all have to remember the 15 minutes and
small chunks. It IS WHAT GOT ME through the making of my highlight
folders...So easy to get overwhelmed and forget that 15 minute trick
ourselves!
[ Sabine H ] Gotta love Flylady.... so much of Stacy's tips.. 15
minutes at a time.. sound like her.
[ LyciaK ] @Stacy - great advice (that I need to take!) I tend to
get bogged down as to "where I'm at" but really
need to keep listening to the current lessons as they are posted.
[ stacy julian ] "artiste,<br />
sorry .. don't stack, but stand old journals and albums in these
big bins. I have a big bin for my childhood and my college years.
I can put a lid on them and move them to our storage room and I
can access them pretty easily!"
[ just jeani ] artiste - my studio was a disaster too, but I've
found that by using a kitchen timer I've been able to fix this.
I set the timer for 3/4 of the time I've alloted myself for the
task at hand. When it goes off I know it's time to begin to tidy
up. I make any notes, create a few stacks to 'to-do' and return
my studio to a work space until next time. Usually this takes just
about the amount of time left on the timer. Maybe this would work
for you too.
[ cgull1 ] FlyLady works so well with Stacy's concepts . . . we
have to love this stuff!
[ artiste ] Thank you for your suggestions. I'll remember the "15
minutes".
[ sleepyhead ] great idea jeani
[ stacy julian ] I'm ALWAYS amazed at how much clean up I can accomplish
in 15 minutes when I'm focused. seriously! Set it and go.
[ LyciaK ] Thanks so much for the chat, Stacy. It's the first one
that I've made it to.
[ pennyscraps ] Thank you Stacy and fellow LOMers...
[ Leora ] Stacy, thanks to you, my whole family is doing the 15
minute thing. Amazing how much straightening we can do in 15 minutes.
[ LyciaK ] The first one I've made it to for the 2010 LOM session
:)
[ AmySJ ] Thanks! You have all given me some really good food for
thought and inspiration today!
[ sleepyhead ] Stacy where can we find a list of which WRMK colors
will not be discontinued?
[ stacy julian ] Seriously, I could NOT keep up with my personal
LOM without my kitchen timer. I know I say this a LOT, but I mean
it.
[ scrappyangel ] Stacy thanks for the tip about staying with the
lessons even if I am not quite there yet. I think that will be really
helpful. Before I felt like I shouldn't listen / read because it
would just add more confusion but now I just feel lost so you must
be right!
[ cropnmom ] that hour flew. thank you stacy, so much for you time,
and while I'm at it thanks for the audio messages. hearing your
cheerful voice thursday morning is just what I need!
[ artiste ] ok, i'm off to set my timer. 15 minutes in my studio.
NOW! Thank you all. :-)
[ stacy julian ] Any final questions? The sun in shining and I feel
like jogging, must act on this!
[ cropnmom ] Yeaaaah! artiste!
[ sleepyhead ] bound book in the blueprint?
[ italgal ] Have a great day, everyone! Thanks for all the input!
[ Leora ] Have a great jog Stacy! thanks for being here.
[ theartsymom ] thanks Stacy!
[ stacy julian ] Thank you EVERYONE for coming. I really enjoy these
chats. Never feel like I keep up very good, but I so enjoy the mental
picture of friends all over the place, sitting down to discuss LOM!!
[ Brenda in Sunny So Cal ] Enjoy the jog, and the sun Thanks!
[ Lucy :) ] Is anyone else struggling to triage due to too few photos?
pulling 100 photos would almost empty my binders!!
[ noell ] Walking away from the chat with some tangible advice I
can go use! Thanks Stacy and everyone. Have a great jog (Stacy)!
[ Sabine H ] thanks Stacy... have a great day everyone.
[ Lucy :) ] Gosh Stacy, if you feel like jogging we'd better not
hold you up! That feeling may be gone in 10 minutes time!
[ nonnysbooks ] My stack of triaged photos is very small Lucy, so
far about 30
[ sleepyhead ] "Go jog, good for you!<br />
Any LOMers in NO Va.?"
[ stacy julian ] "Lucy,<br />
don't pull 100 photos if it doesn't feel right. If you don't have
5 years of photos (10 to 15 binders) then 100 is too many. Trust
your gut!"
[ Brenda in Sunny So Cal ] LUCY, don't take the 100 literally, do
a pass, look for similars or duplicates I only have about 30 or
so for now
[ Leora ] I'm not in No VA, but I hear that it is raining there.
No jogging for you...
[ stacy julian ] Good-bye!
[ noell ] Lucy, I'm not worrying about the 100 numbers. Stacy said
she only uses that number because students need an idea to use,
but you just do whatever works for you. In time you'll get more
photos and they'll fill up.
[ sleepyhead ] Oh darn LOL - yes we're soggy
[ Lucy :) ] that's good to know Nonnysbooks/Brenda :) Stacy - I
have 30 yrs worth of photos in 3 binders! Seriously!
[ cropnmom ] no jogging in Jersey today, either.
[ AmySJ ] Off to organize and hopefully listen to the Stacy video
over at Renee Pearson a lot less interupted than Tuesday night.
[ nonnysbooks ] I've come to tag myself as "stuck in film
mode". I'm not a camera hound and don't have nearly as
many photos as I thought I had. See my post in "Ask Stacy"
from last night.
[ Leora ] Bye all! Off to scrapbook--at least I really hope so!
[ nonnysbooks ] I have about 15 binders of photos (but I'm calling
these "supply binders" not storage binders. When
I pulled for the storage binders, I ended up with ONE Storage binder
(pictures I want to scrapbook) for 2003-2010.
[ Lucy :) ] "Nonny - it's good to know I'm not the only one
out there with so few pics!<br />
I would love to take more photos but I never seem to find the time/opportunity
to get the camera out - when you are at work all day it really limits
your opportunities to go snapping!!"
[ scrappyangel ] I am ordering the 5 X 7 CDs today but I was wondering
if anyone has found 5 X 7 tab dividers? The ones on Highsmith are
only 4 X 6?
[ just jeani ] I made a list of tabs for my CAT DRWS on the computer
and then 'imagined' how they'd function. For the most part I've
got it down pretty good. Do need to tweek a little and found I had
to add some as I noticed an abundance of types of photos emerging.
I actually love the drawers and think they are the heart and soul
of this entire system.
[ nonnysbooks ] The supply binders may end up jumping over into
cold storage, but it felt so good to put the sorted picks into photo
albums and dusted off, I can't bear to put them back away just yet.
[ scrappyangel ] Nonny/Lucy, I don't think that is a bad thing.
You have a great opportunity to goet LOM in place and really think
about your photo priorities because you aren't overwhelmed or bogged
down with thousands and thousands of photos shoved in boxes. I don't
have many photos either but I think, in this case, it is a good
thing!
[ pennyscraps ] Did anyone add a 5th category: Days We Celebrate?
I did. I also have another drawer for School of Life for the boys.
I was given 3 sets of drawers, so I have 6 in total. I am moving
them now so I can reach them easily.
[ nonnysbooks ] I think some of us baby boomers are still "stuck
in film mode", film and developing is expensive so you
get the camera out for special occasions or vacation...not everyday.
Its something I intend to work on.
[ just jeani ] Re the 5x7 tabs. Have you tried filling your printer
with card stock and then printing out the templates Stacy provided?
I know it means having to cut them all yourself, but that's what
i think of as a TV time activity.
[ Lucy :) ] scrappyangel - have you looked in any office supply
stores for divider tabs that are used in filing boxes? I prob can't
help 'cos I'm in the UK but I have 6x8 ones from an office store
that I have cut down a little to fit my box ...
[ nonnysbooks ] Oh, I have boxes of photos still stacked up in the
spare bedroom, but I think its not as many photos as I thought,
because many are in the old magnetic album.
[ cropnmom ] I find I was using the drawers incorrectly. I was putting
anything that wasn't obviously part of a LO into a category, so
they are wayyyy overstuffed. my new drawers are en route and they
are only going to get the 'cream'. I see a rapidly expanding cold
storage in my future.
[ just jeani ] pennyscraps - my children's school albums are completed,
but I would so have done that were they not. And I love the celebrations
idea - I don't have a category drawer for that, but I did set up
a photo bin - it's a great idea.
[ cropnmom ] for my colored cat tabs, I am using DCWV mat stacks,
trimmed to size

[ Lucy :) ] I would think that "days we celebrate"
would be a sub category under "Thins we do" -
but if you wnat to make it separate, do :)
[ pennyscraps ] Thanks Jeani. My sons are 8th and 9th grade and
I want to get cranking on their albums soon....
[ scrappyangel ] pennyscraps - I am going to something similar like
Holidays and Celebrations because I still like holiday layouts and
I don't think they go into things we do
[ LyciaK ] DCWV?
[ pennyscraps ] Well we take so many pix at celebrations that I
felt it would overwhelm the things we do... I have 25 in my family
that we get with on regular basis...
[ cropnmom ] oops. sorry about the double post. Diecuts With a View
(the big tablet type stacks of cardstock)
[ nonnysbooks ] Off to start my Saturday, and add music to my scraproom
so it doesn't feel like solitary confinement.
[ Lucy :) ] penny - but surely some of those pics taken at a celebration
would go under people we love? and maybe some under places too ...
[ scrappyangel ] I haven't looked in an office supply store because
of the acid free issue but I might just give in and do that today
because I don't really want to cut them myself. I found them on
a Cricut Cartridge too but I was just hoping someone would have
a magical link for me
[ LyciaK ] Thanks...my paper scrapping knowledge is limited :)
[ nonnysbooks ] Which cricut cart did you find them on?
[ cropnmom ] "LyciaK-if you are in the US these are often on
sale at the various craft stores<br />
...or you can watch for a 40% coupon!"
[ just jeani ] I think it's important not to overfill the cat drawers
with a collected type of photo - like all Christmas. If you have
an abundance of these they should be in the SB. Cat Drws are for
incidental photos, not entire collections. I used my extra bin for
holiday simply because I could fill 3 SB with just holiday shots
and it makes it easier to sort and purge. Some go to SB, some CAT,
some cold storage and yes, some in the trash.
[ LyciaK ] As an aside...nonnysbooks - do I recognize your name
from a class over at Simplify101?
[ scrappyangel ] Pennyscraps - a friend of mine who alerady took
LOM uses Events Worth Celebrating in her library
[ nonnysbooks ] "Yep, Aby uses the 15 minute rule too<br
/>
I took a couple of Aby's classes last Fall and the Holiday class
too."
[ LyciaK ] Thanks, cropnmom. I am in the US (Texas). When you posted
your explanation, I recalled seeing these at Michaels and at the
LSS. I think this is a GREAT idea...good size & acid free
:)
[ cropnmom ] and pretty!
[ LyciaK ] @cropnom - pretty, too - YES! :)
[ pennyscraps ] Well I will play with it and see. Easier to go from
broad to narrow than narrow to broad....
[ LyciaK ] @nonnysbooks - I've taken several of Aby's classes too.
Really enjoy her too. I'm "schoolmommy" over there.
[ scrappyangel ] Nonny, I found tabs on From My Kitchen but I don't
have that one so maybe I will just order that instead
[ nonnysbooks ] scrappyangel, thanks, I've got that cartridge, that
should make my divider prep a lot easier.
[ just jeani ] bye ladies, have an awesome week. The sun is shining
and it's time to get in the garden for a few hours. Scrap strong
[ scrappyangel ] Are you doing 4 X 6 or 5 X 7???
[ nonnysbooks ] "LyciaK, <br />
The Simplify 101 classes got me started on getting things around
the house organized, and taking LOM seemed to be the logical follow-on,
to tackle the crates of pics that I wanted to dig into."
[ Lucy :) ] has everybody else chosen their category colours? I'm
still undecided on how to separate mine out (I'm struggling to get
hold of the WRMK albums I want to use which isn't helping!)
[ nonnysbooks ] Scrappyangel, I'm just doing 4x6...
[ cropnmom ] bye lucky jeani where the sun is shining...
[ nonnysbooks ] My category colors are undecided as of right now,
but something will strike me eventually.
[ nonnysbooks ] Heading off now to get the day started before the
morning is totally frittered away. Scrapstrong everyone.
[ LyciaK ] @nonnysbooks - totally agree :)
[ scrappyangel ] ok, thanks. I don't use my cricut enough and I
would hate to buy a cartridge and then not be able to print the
dividers in 5 X 7...Have a great day!
[ cropnmom ] i have the WRMK leather in kiwi, country blue, lilac
and baby pink...but I'm re-thinking the pink for maybe yellow. cats
will be same color as album.
[ LyciaK ] I could sit at this computer all day, but need to set
my timer and get busy on other things. The sun is shining and its
the first day of our Spring Break...and a welcome break for me as
a homeschooling mom. I've really enjoyed chatting with all of you.
Have a GREAT day!
[ Lucy :) ] Have a good day everyone :)
[ cropnmom ] Have a scrappy day, everyone!
[ scrappyangel ] You all have a great Saturday too!!!
[ pennyscraps ] Okay - got my category drawers moved to a spot where
I can easily access them so time to dive into them - after a haircut
today. Ya'll have a super Saturday! Thanks and bye bye!
