[ nonnysbooks
] Good morning Annette
[ Hsanders ] Hi guys. First time I have managed to get onto a chat.
Good afternoon from the UK
[ nonnysbooks ] Good afternoon to you
[ Hsanders ] Is it an early saturday morning start for the rest
of you?
[ Hsanders ] Umm as everyone slowly seems to be disappearing have
i converted the time wrong?
[ Annette33 ] Starts in 6
[ Annette33 ] 8 am here in New Mexico
[ Hsanders ] few thanks
[ nonnysbooks ] accidentally clicked the wrong button.....its almost
time for the chat to start. I'm trying to multi-task and get my
e-mail cleaned up
[ Annette33 ] how many photos have you triaged?
[ Annette33 ] I've done a whopping 6, but it is spring break now,
hopefully, I can get some stuff done
[ Hsanders ] too many! photos which I dont want in my binders and
should go into cold storage (i think) seem to be finding there where
into category drawer
[ AmySJ ] Im here! Just ran to get breakfast
[ AmySJ ] I have about 50 more before I get around 350 which was
kinda the max from Stacy to this point
[ Hsanders ] Well as at the moment I am making connections from
my binders rather than putting them in CD the proper number I have
is around 50
[ nonnysbooks ] So far I only have about 50 photos triaged...but
then my storage binder (yes binder as in 1) is for 03-09. I have
12 "supply binders" as I call them...Supply binders
are the pictures that didn't make the cut for Storage binder, but
that I'm not ready to put in cold storage or pitch yet.
[ Annette33 ] good job Amy
[ Hsanders ] Have to say Amy you fancy a trip to the UK to help
me out?
[ AmySJ ] Doing the pics Digi- you do it as you go through them.
So, it'a bit different than pulling them out of the binders- I did
most of them as I sorted out which pics to put in the "binders"
[ Annette33 ] The ones I pitched, I put into a box, for the girl
to go through later, when they are older. I was giving them to the
girls, but then I kept finding them everywhere, so I put them in
their own personal cold storage
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] Good morning!
[ AmySJ ] UK would be cool. . . Only if I could research DH's louse
great great grandfather. . . He died in a mexican jail drunk. .
He was british citizen who lived in Texas. The only reason I know
anything about that family is all the paperwork from the three consulates
trying to get his body back to the US
[ Barb in AK ] 'Mornin', Annette!! I actually made it!
[ Annette33 ] (Waving at Barb)
[ Hsanders ] Morning Scrapbookgirl and Barb
[ LyciaK ] Good morning from Texas, everyone!
[ AmySJ ] Goodmorning back at you from you neck of the woods
[ Hsanders ] Amy have you looked on the internet? There is a UK
site which has birth certificates etc which you can get.
[ LyciaK ] (waving) Yes, hi AmySJ!!!
[ nonnysbooks ] good morning Stacy
[ AmySJ ] I have. I have some UK stuff but right now, I'm focusing
on other generations and folks. I want to have as much info as I
can from here in the US before I get to the UK research
[ KimberlyAnn ] Good morning from chilly South Dakota!
[ stacy julian ] Good Morning! I lost track of time over in the
forum. How is everyone doing??
[ Annette33 ] Spring Break began at 3:05 yesterday
[ AmySJ ] Great! Can't wait to scrapbook this AM but looking forward
to inspiration from our chat first
[ LyciaK ] Doing good, Stacy! I really admire you for getting up
so early - even on a Saturday!
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] Easy to do, Stacy! Doin' great this morning!
[ cropnmom ] Good Morning from south Jersey!
[ mb2009 ] finally made it to another chat -- need to get back on
track. Still sorting photos.
[ LyciaK ] Our spring break ends Monday morning. It's been great!
[ Hsanders ] Hoping to do some scrapbooking latter this afternoon
[ stacy julian ] Thanks Lycia -- it really is the time that makes
the most sense (this is unfortunate some days -- but I'm a morning
person!)
[ Hsanders ] Glad I am not the only one who is still sorting photos
[ stacy julian ] Abosutely LOVING what I am seeing in the gallery.
Was poking around last night. Too tired to comment, but loving every
minute.
[ Annette33 ] still sorting here, too
[ Hsanders ] Oh wish I was a morning person Stacy. Would make getting
up for work so much easier!
[ AmySJ ] I think we'll all be sorting for a long long time
[ Annette33 ] love the title pages
[ LyciaK ] I agree - so much easier to get stuff done early in the
am - especially if the rest of the house is quiet!
[ AmySJ ] I had fun doing mine. . . they made me rather giddy and
now I can't wait to add more scrpabook pages.
[ nonnysbooks ] I almost seem to have more category cards than pics
in the category drawers. And nearly all the pics are in Us or People
[ Hsanders ] true Amy. Having trouble stopping sorting and doing
some scrapbooking. Getting so many ideas
[ Annette33 ] my morning goes in this order, cat meows, dog whines,
I'm awake
[ stacy julian ] Hey girls. I just sorted photos for 15 minutes
this morning. I've got two stacks of fresh photos, so I was cleaning
out my 2005 Fall storage binder -- wondering why on earth I thought
I was going to scrapbook so many pictures from Africa.
[ AmySJ ] Because you loved your trip from Africa!
[ Hsanders ] Because it was an amazing holiday which you enjoyed?
[ stacy julian ] You'll be sorting or clearing photos forever (oK,
maybe not forever) but it is what allows me to scrapbook -- so it's
really a small price to pay.
[ Barb in AK ] AmySJ--Were you using Lickity-Slips (or whatever
that is) for your title pages, and will you continue to slip in
photos and embellies in the photo sleeves for your scrapping?
[ ckytang ] I've sorted all my printed photos (up to 2004), which
took 5 binders. Now I need to sort and start triaging my digital
photos, which is 2005 on.
[ Hsanders ] I am having the same trouble with a holiday I took
to America a few years ago.
[ stacy julian ] true. I am glad that I've become a bit more realistic/intentional
about printing however!
[ cropnmom ] Because when you sorted them, every photo evoked some
memory?
[ Leora ] Good morning all! I am off to a bar mitzvah this morning.
Sorry not to be able to stay and chat. Just wanted to say Hi!
[ stacy julian ] I did actually find two sets of pics that I still
want to scrapbook -- so I'm moving those pictures to the next oldest
binder and giving myself a little MORE time!
[ AmySJ ] Barb- I used some 4X6 pages from Hobby Lobby. . . not
sure what brand but they were the cheaper ones. That was all they
had. I'm going to upgrade because these don't seem very tight or
like they're keeping the pictures in.
[ Scrapping forever ] Good Morning Everyone. I need to go get my
coffee so I can wake up and join in.
[ stacy julian ] Hi and Bye Leora!
[ Hsanders ] Yes sorting photos for printing I am still getting
my head around. When I got some back the other day I wondered why
I had them done!
[ AmySJ ] I don't plan on embellishing them any more. I do plan
on changing out the photos in them. I want the title/dedicaiton
part ot stick out and to give the eye a resting point from the other
5 photos on the page.
[ stacy julian ] Hsanders -- it's just a process I think. The good
news is we do get better and better at it!
[ Hsanders ] Thanks, I was hoping you would say that :)
[ Barb in AK ] AmySJ-I loved what you did. What will your layouts
be looking like? Full pages?
[ stacy julian ] AmySJ --I've enjoyed reading about and seeing your
ideas for framework pages. Love that you are letting these ideas
evolve!
[ Gloriak ] Hello all. I missed the last 2 chats due to kid activities
also known as photo opportunities! Here is where I am at. I have
completely given up on picassa and am only using the photo program
that came with windows vista. I have 3 years of photos there (about
3000) I only have 20 photos in a highlights folder and not sure
what to do next with them.
[ AmySJ ] LOL I also think there's a reward for getting your photos
off your camera sooner- Last night I could tag all my pics from
upload- 2010, Home, and Scrapbooking. (There weren't any people
but just my session with my title pages)
[ KimberlyAnn ] I got my five years into binders and took a break
to attend a crop last night - it was so freeing to browse through,
be inspired, and scrap what I wanted instead of pre-planning pages
and having to design the page and print all the photos the night
before
[ Leora ] Thanks Stacy! I am stealing the last few minutes to soak
in everyone's great ideas....
[ Barb in AK ] I am a real "simple scrapper"---Wonder
where I learned that, eh?
[ Hsanders ] Amy I thought you idea of using those pages as title
was really good. I already use them as a summary for days out or
holidays rather than mini books etc
[ mb2009 ] I'm really enjoying the sorting and getting through some
older pictures. Just feeling guilty about being 2 lessons behind.
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] I'm behind in lessons due to lots of LIFE happening
over here. Hoping to get the first triage assignment completed this
week and get back on track.
[ stacy julian ] "Ok, for fun I'm going to pick a name and
ask a question.<br />
Meggie,<br />
Where are you in the process and how are you feeling on a scale
from 1 to 10?"
[ nessa b. ] good morning, everyone
[ stacy julian ] "nesse b.<br />
How goes triage? Easy, hard -- somewhere inbetween?"
[ stacy julian ] How funny -- I pick nesse b from the list and then
she said good morning at the very same moment!
[ LyciaK ] Great idea for the random questions, Stacy!
[ MichelleC ] I am really getting tripped up on the triaging. I
keep going through my binders and I am not pulling very many pictures.
I don't have any issue of pulling them out of their chronological
order. I don't even scrap much event type pages anymore so order
doesn't matter much. I love seeing my pictrues, I think that is
why I am having trouble with the drawers.
[ stacy julian ] "JeriP<br />
What are your early thoughts on framework pages. Are you doing them
now? Why or why not?"
[ Meggie ] "Stacy,<br />
I'm enjoying the whole process but did give up the digital. Yesterday
I found some pages just waiting for something so I put them in the
Us and People we Love albums. Thanks for asking.<br />
I do have pictures that I have inherited that I'm looking forward
to working on too. Thanks for asking."
[ Barb in AK ] Kimberly Ann---That excites me, too. I am a BIG "planner".
I want to be free to flip, choose, and SCRAP!! :-)
[ just jeani ] I remain stuck on how my pages will ultimately be
stored; breaking them down into categories etc. I must say this
consideration and a few others has totally convinced me I'll have
to give in and go 3-ring as opposed to post.
[ stacy julian ] "MichelleC,<br />
I know it's hard to tuck photos away after you've spent time making
them viewable, but let that angst go, because the CD (and triage)
are going to show you amazing things. You are supposed to kind of
forget about these photos for a little while, but you can also train
yourself to spend time with these photos too -- I do."
[ Gloriak ] I have 3 storage binders housing years of prints. Some
of these have been scrapped and some are not. They are in rough
chrono order (by year as I print them.) I only print the pics I
am definately going to scrap. So I just can't make myself pull for
the category drawers if I haven't scrapped it yet. The pics I did
pull (10) were from pages already scrapped where the spare photos
hadn't made it to cold storage yet. So it feels more like I pulled
them just to do the assignment rather than because they "spoke"
to me in any way.
[ cropnmom ] confessing I haven't made it through this week's handouts
yet. First time I've felt "behind".
[ Hsanders ] Meggie I am so glad that I am not the only one who
has given up on the digital for the moment. Going to go back latter.
[ stacy julian ] "Meggie,<br />
I think I would quit or at least get really frustrated if I were
taking all of this on NOW. I'm glad you are letting yourself set
some things aside. You will get there -- focus on the basic flow
of things!"
[ AmySJ ] If I were a paper scrapper, I think I'd give up on a lot
of the digi myself. (Kinda like I gave up on the printing because
I am digi)
[ KimberlyAnn ] Barb - it was so, so fun. I did make sure to pack
some papers and embellishments that went with my top five ideas
for the binder I brought with me, and some sketches in case I got
stuck on design.
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] I'm behind on lessons. What is "CD"?
[ Barb in AK ] Stacy--I have TONS of "heritage"
type photos---From the '50s / '60s. Should I put those in my category
drawers? I have already done an Heritage Album :-)
[ AprilFL ] CD = category drawers
[ Meggie ] Hsanders I kept reading that some people have given up
on it too so thought it was OK. I still want to do it but perhaps
next year or after class.
[ Gloriak ] I still have 5 months worth of photos on SD cards as
I am not sure of my work flow yet. I am feeling a little less lost
I think but still way behind and not sure what to do next.
[ Sabine H ] Stacy ... for your Title pages - I know you do a 'title'
page for the first album of a series and then use the Section page
as an intro to volume 2 of the series... question: do you do a dedictation
page for that 2nd volume?
[ Hsanders ] Just Jeani I made the move from post to ring binders
last year and I find it so much easier to sort them, and to put
the pages in the protectors!
[ stacy julian ] "Gloriak,<br />
This is oK! Don't worry about it too much or force yourself to 'get
it'<br />
The clarity and ability will come. I promise."
[ stacy julian ] CD - category drawers. sorry!
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] Thanks, April. Gotta back in LOM-speak!
[ Jen Mohler ] Stacy I like this idea of training yourself to spend
time with your triaged photos. I'm interested in what your process
is for doing this. I spend time with them, but am curious what you
do here.
[ stacy julian ] cropnmom -- heavens! you are NOT behind. It's only
Saturday. Be nice to yourself and relax. We have a 'spring break'
coming up too!
[ Annette33 ] this class has made scrapbooking with my students
so much more educational
[ nessa b. ] KimberlyAnn- I'm inspired by your crop story but would
like to know how you packed? what did you take that you were able
to just pick and put together?????
[ stacy julian ] Heritage photos -- I have a solution for these
priceless photos coming. Hold tight.
[ MelissaTX ] Good morning from rainy and cold Texas!
[ Hsanders ] How long do you guys get for spring break? I suppose
that is over Easter? (sorry not a scrapbooking question but everyone
keeps on mentioning it)
[ MelissaTX ] A week for spring break.
[ Gloriak ] After I got the book Photo Freedom I set up binders
and albums with title pages and category pages and so I am ready
to put completed pages in their new homes just not sure how to get
started. I need someone to give me something very specific to do
I guess!! I don't know why I am so afraid of uploading my latest
photos before the system is in place. Logically I know its going
to take time.
[ just jeani ] still haven't done the digital tagging, labeling.
Not sure why, just haven't taken the time to really understand and
apply the process. I'm sure once I do it will simplify things. Any
strategies for getting started?
[ AmySJ ] So Melissa, don't you live in the Big D area. . . We don't
yet have the rain and in fact had a bit of sunshine. . . wondering
where it was.
[ italgal ] @ Stacy. Do you ever have trouble finding a photo you
believe is in your CD? I find I am pulling several photos that could
go in several different subcategories. I am getting stuck, worried
about how I will find it in the future....
[ LyciaK ] MelissaTX - aren't you in Dallas? East Tx is still sunny
and beautiful!
[ nessa b. ] triage was soooooooooo easy once the pics were in strage
binders! I did my 100 in no time!
[ AmySJ ] LOL Lycia and I are both thinking the same thing here
in East Texas- where's the nasty rain, can we avoid it?
[ MelissaTX ] Yes, Dallas! The rain started last night and temperature
has already dropped to the high 30s. I can't believe it - more winter
UGH! Yesterday was in the high 60s.
[ Hsanders ] Thanks Melissa TX. Oh Nessa b you are lucky.
[ cropnmom ] my new drawers came and right now they only have about
30 photos and the basic categories. My old ones are FULL (yikes).
I am leaving them alone until all my LOM assignments are current,
then start wading thru. I have a feeling the early binders will
be filling up then.
[ JeriP ] I have six years of printed photos in binders and 5 years
of digital. I'm still working on the digital but I'm having so much
fun feeling like I can now tell fun stories with these photos. I
found a photo with almost all of the grandchildren individually
with grandpa. Now I can easily find missing ones in the computer
with keywords to make a complete set! I need quite a few pages to
show everyone.
[ LyciaK ] @AmySJ - my husband started saying 2 or 3 days ago that
it was going to get nasty/cold on Friday night. So far...nothing.
[ AmySJ ] Well, Melissa and Lycia, wonder why it's not here yet.
I haven't stepped outside to see if we got that cold yet. Gonna
have to check radar after our chat.
[ SandyShutterbug ] "I am an alumni from 2008, and I tend to
be a social scrapper. I don't make enough time for it unless I am
with a friend or two.I am behind with LOM this year because I am
also taking Design Your Life with Cathy Z. This is the last week
of DYL. <br />
I have 13 storage binders filled, my library albums up and running.
Last year triaged many photos to my category drawers. Not too many!
I have my layouts done for the framework pages, but I still don't
have photos on them! Stacy used to show the pages with a lot of
pics from her square punch drawers, or am I remembering wrong? Did
you update some of your framework pages for 2010?"
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] We get a week in Oklahoma. Ours is just ending
- with a snowstorm today? Wha...?
[ stacy julian ] "italgal,<br />
The whole triage and category drawer thing is so different from
how we are used to dealing with pictures, I know. But ... for me,
I 'find' pictures rather than 'lose' them. I am continually surprised
by what I find. I might set out looking for a particular photo or
type of photo and then I find something much better. I don't know
how to say it other than it's magical and it works! Hang in there."
[ KimberlyAnn ] Hey nessa b :) I am using the digital workflow cards
to note my top five layout ideas for each quarter. I looked through
those ideas for the binder I brought with me. Then I said - hmmm,
remodeling, football, family - and grabbed some theme papers and
embellishments for those things. Then I limited myself on color
- blue/green/brown colored cardstock, patterned papers, ribbons,
etc. I still brought three bags of stuff with all my tools!
[ just jeani ] sorry those os you still slogging through winter
weather. Went to Scrapbook EXPO yesterday in a short sleeve T and
ate dinner outdoors afterwards. Lovin life in California
[ nmkaren ] Good morning from snowy New Mexico. Yesterday bright
sunshine and blue sky. Today blizzard snow - interesting state.
[ AprilFL ] KimberlyAnn, THAT is a fabulous use of those workflow
cards!!
[ Gloriak ] I have never ordered prints online, usually just go
to walmart or walgreens. Is it hard and do I have to set up albums
and do all that orgainizing stuff at shutterfly or where ever I
go?
[ Annette33 ] Karen--we got a good covering through the night, in
southeastern NM
[ stacy julian ] "SandyShutterbug.<br />
My framework pages are the same. We will talk about square-punch
picture drawers in a few lessons and I do use these pictures on
pages. There are two on Trey's section page, but most are just used
on 'regular' layouts."
[ AmySJ ] I've got my highlights on my Iphone and an app called
NoteMaster. I create a new note in my Layout Ideas with layout ideas
and attach the photos from my phone. Loving that!
[ LyciaK ] You know...Texas weather! Dallas usually gets harder
than we do. I-20 seems to be the dividing line for weather changes
between North & South, while Canton divides the East/West.
[ MelissaTX ] GloriaK - with the start of LOM, I did my first upload
and printing from Shutterfly. It was simple and I got a ton of photos
mailed right to my house within about 3 days.
[ LyciaK ] Talk about off topic! ;-)
[ Hsanders ] I never go to the high street if i can help it. I get
much better photos by using bonusprint and do not worry online is
not as hard or scary as you think. (Im from UK so no walmart)
[ nmkaren ] I made the funnest connections yesterday while looking
through pictures with my boys (I have five boys). They were finding
photos of themselves with the exact expressions as some of the gorilla
pictures from the zoo. We had the best time and I will definitely
scrapbook these connections.
[ LyciaK ] @SandyShutterbug - WOW! Great progress since 2008!!!
[ MelissaTX ] nmkaren - that will be such a fun page!
[ stacy julian ] "JenMohler - So, I think my best strategy
for spending time with pictures in my category drawers is to pull
out a stack *almost* everytime I triage. So ... if I've got a photo
for the Hugs&Kisses subcategory, when I go to put it away,
I pull out the pics that are already there and flip through them
quick. It's like a little *treat* to see what is brewing there.
<br />
does that help?"
[ AprilFL ] GloriaK - and if you could try and get your first upload
done while class is still in session, we're all still here to help
you.
[ AmySJ ] Walmart photos are so totally hit and miss. I still prefer
online rather than Walmart- but they at least did a better job yesterday
than the last time. I'll eventually replace my title/dedicaiton
pics with better printed ones.
[ MichelleC ] I have been embracing the digital but decided to leave
it to highlights and only decided to tag who, what if it's significant
and fits a broad category and where if it is someplace we go a lot.
I am staying current on the new pics and little by little working
backwards. The tagging into library categories isn't going to work
for me now, maybe not really ever. I am not digital so I don't know
that it matters much.
[ nonnysbooks ] Walgreens site is pretty easy, you log in, load
your pics up (you can put them in albums on Walgreen's site). Then
select the ones you want to print, or tell it to print everything
in an album. Then you have an option to choose a size besides 4x6.
And you can pick them up in an hour, or have them mailed to you.
[ stacy julian ] nmkaren -- such a happy thing!
[ KimberlyAnn ] Thanks, April!
[ Gloriak ] For those of you farther along or alum. Does it ever
feel like you have about 9 different places to look when you are
seeking a specific photo? There seems to be several possible places
on the computer as well as binders, CD and cold storage.
[ MichelleC ] That is a great idea JenMohler. I love that and need
to try that.
[ stacy julian ] "MichelleC,<br />
I really only tag/keyword for people and relationships and a few
others. I too am just starting to do this, working forward and not
too worried about working backwards. In time, maybe!"
[ Hsanders ] Oh nmkaren what a cool layout to do.
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] just jeani - We were in short sleeves and in
the 70's yesterday too! We just switched to snow overnight!
[ Sabine H ] stacy... do you do a dedication page for subsequent
albums in your LOM or just the first one of a series?
[ LyciaK ] @scrapbookgirl71 - where are you from? (sorry if I missed
that info)
[ Annette33 ] how come the time flies so fast in this chat?
[ stacy julian ] GloriaK, I want to meet you and give you a GIANT
hug. I think you worry a bit too much about things that *might*
happen in the future. It's all going to be OK, I promise. And yes,
there will be LOTS of places you can go to look for and find photos.
This is a good thing!
[ AmySJ ] Talking weather, I was listening to the Royals Spring
Training game yesterday- it was warmer in Kansas City than there
in Arizona- only KC was expecting snow today and of course the Phoenix
area wasn't.
[ Jen Mohler ] Totally helps, thanks. I spend time looking through
them, but I like the idea of spending time with them as I categorize
new photos. Thanks.
[ MelissaTX ] GloriaK - I am just getting my system set up, but
am pretty far along. I have had so many ideas for connections pages
and spent this week making quite a few layouts and I did have to
look in several places to find the photos that I wanted. But at
least I had an idea where to find them and actually found a few
I hadn't thought of to go with a layout when I looked in my category
drawers.
[ Hsanders ] Gloriaak I am only looking at the actual photos i have
printed. I am using digital side to sort through photos and decide
on which ones i want printed. Still working on CD
[ cropnmom ] I have grown to really like the online option (I use
Shutterfly), as the printing can be customized on the back. For
my dd's b-day: 2001 Q4-Amy's 7th (reptile) b-day. When those pix
wind up in cat drawers, I will know the original context and time...if
it is needed for some reason.
[ just jeani ] Stacy, reading that you're only tagging working forward
is an epiphany! Oh course that's the way to start. I can always
go back once I've 'mastered' it. Now I have a game plan - now that
is BIG!
[ MichelleC ] Gloriak I work a lot from my binders, I am really
trying to get the CD working for me. I love to browse through my
digital pics for ideas when I just don't know what I want to work
on and from there I know where to go look for the picture.
[ nessa b. ] KimberlyAnn- thanks. I've got a crop coming up and
have been wondering how in the heck I'm gonna pack for it! got the
workflow cards printed but haven't filled them out yet. now I see
how handy they can be. thanks again
[ nmkaren ] I think sometimes trying too hard to make connections
gets in the way. Last nights gorilla experience helped show me once
again that with ears open and a system in place connections are
everywhere. And it doesn't hurt to have so many goofy boys in my
life.
[ AmySJ ] I'm finding I love that while I'm waiting somewhere I
can go through my pics and make notes etc. I'll be adding my category
drawers to my phone soon. That way they're totally portable.
[ MonicaMcNeill ] Good Morning everyone :)
[ Annette33 ] Going to a crop is way funner now, I am so much more
focused, and get alot done
[ stacy julian ] Sabine, so ... I just started these author bio
pages (and the index pages) these are new for me and have become
my solution for subsequent albums in one branch of my library. So
.. there's really just one title page (behind it is the dedication
page) when I move a section out of the original binder, the section
page becomes the 'intro' to this new binder and I'm going to put
an 'author bio' page behind it. See this week's handout!
[ MelissaTX ] Hi Monica! Just curious how plans are going for a
get together in the Dallas area?
[ LyciaK ] @AmySJ - iPhone?
[ Gloriak ] I am such an instant gratification person. If I have
an idea for a LO I want to be able to do it right away and not have
to search alot or wait for prints to arrive.
[ AmySJ ] I think tagging going forward is a great option for paper
scrapbookers or those who will be printing. You can then see if
you'll use them- you can always go back and do the old ones.
[ stacy julian ] Good Morning Monica!
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] You will put them in to albums on Shutterfly,
but you create or tell it what existing album to use when you upload,
so you kill two birds with one stone. I created albums with the
same HL name I used in PSE.
[ Sabine H ] thanks Stacy... that clarifies for me. Love the bio
page by the way. Great idea, and so is the index at the back....
[ AmySJ ] Iphone- Yup! 2.5 weeks and loving it so much! (Still no
plans to go all Mac or anything.) I had a Windows Mobile Smartphone
that was dying. Replacing it was the same price and I already had
the internet package. (I get better high speed on my phone that
at home- for a long time I had just dial-up at home and now have
Satellite- half the speed of DSL and extreme bandwidth limits)
[ nonnysbooks ] I've put sorting my old pics on hold until after
class. I started sorting through some this past week, and realized
I will have a lot of work ahead of me scanning and "repairing"
polaroid pics from the 70s...and I don't have the time to put into
that right now.
[ MonicaMcNeill ] MelissaTx - SO sorry I've not sent out a note
yet about a Dallas get together. This was the first week I wasn't
sick after 3 weeks!! Also, I'm wrapping up an intense project at
work right now so I'm planning on getting a note out by the end
of this week. Apologies for the delay!!
[ MelissaTX ] No problem Monica! Glad to hear you are feeling better.
[ stacy julian ] nonnysbooks -- so smart to wait on some things!
[ MonicaMcNeill ] Gloriak - I satisfy my need for instant gratification
with printing at home ad hoc :)
[ Gloriak ] I had thought to just start tagging and orgainizing
the 2010 photos as I uploaded them and now it is march and I feel
behind so I start telling myself it is too late and then I just
freeze. I think my goal for this week will be to empty all of those
SD cards and get prints from shutterfly. I can put them in binders
and maybe make duplicates for my CD?
[ SandyShutterbug ] Gloria K, I have all but my most recent photos
printed, so I don't bother with the computer. I do use my category
drawers, but primarily my binders. I have my older pictures in strict
alphabetical order (pre LOM) in storage boxes, si if I need to look
there I just need to know an approximate month or year to find..
[ LyciaK ] @AmySJ - ok, now you've really got me thinking! I have
an iPhone (9 months now & LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it). Do the keywords
transfer? I haven't put many pics on my phone, b/c I didn't see
the need, but if I could KW and then sync...
[ MichelleC ] I think one of my triaging problems right now is I
sent all my pre-digital photos off to ScanCafe to get them scanned,
so I don't have those to triage from right now. I still have about
10 binders of photos so it shouldn't be a problem, but I wish I
had pics of my childhood to add into the mix right now.
[ LyciaK ] @AmySJ - right there with you on satellite internet -
but out here in the sticks it's my best option :)
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] LyciaK- NE Oklahoma
[ MonicaMcNeill ] MichelleC- when you saying triaging do you mean
storage binders or pulling for your category drawers?
[ just jeani ] Terrified to send my photos to Scan Cafe - it's in
India which seems soooo far away. And yet, there is so no way I'll
ever have the time to scan all the photos from the pre-digital years.
[ Hsanders ] Michelle C you are so lucky having pictures from your
childhood. I have only ones from my adult years and a few bad quality
ones i took with my first film camera at age of 10 (and not many
of those).
[ mb2009 ] I have lots of old photos too. My plan is to put them
to storage binders and scan as I go to make copies for scrapbooking.
[ MichelleC ] pulling for the category drawers.
[ LyciaK ] @scrapbookgirl71 - I lived in Edmond for 7 years. Still
miss that place...
[ stacy julian ] "GloriaK,<br />
please don't make duplicates for your category drawers. I think
you just need to make prints and start scrapbooking and let the
triage thing happen over time. It really doesn't have to work for
you just yet. And it's ONLY March -- you are not behind at all.
Sit down and scroll through your pictures. Delete the ones you don't
want and move/tag your best ones into a Winter/1st quarter highlights
folder. You can do this!"
[ AprilFL ] Michelle, it can't all happen overnight. Hang in there
and soon you'll be able to add those older photos into the mix.
[ AmySJ ] Lycia- I have yet to find a photo software that keeps
keywords. Would love love love it though. I have them in folders
by Highlights and use the regular Photo Album that came with the
Iphone. But, I can then use the pics on my phone for other things-
like attaching to notes or emailing or the Sherwin Williams color
app I downloaded this week (its cool and free)
[ Gloriak ] I think it might be possible that the flexibilty within
the structure is tripping me up. I hear how everyone is fitting
the system to fit their needs and I just don't know what will work
for me yet.
[ MelissaTX ] I have been meaning to look into ScanSafe-mama mentioned
she has a ton of old negatives.
[ LyciaK ] @AmySJ - thanks for the info about photos on the iPhone.
[ just jeani ] Scan Safe??
[ stacy julian ] MichelleC -- don't worry too much. They'll come
back and when they do, you'll be that much *better* at triage!
[ AprilFL ] GloriaK, you've just got to pick something and try it.
You can't guess what your hurdles may be, or it'll leave you in
a planning stage forever. Go print those photos (no duplicates)
and slip into storage binders and report back to us, okay?
[ MichelleC ] I was nervous about sending them off, but took a leap
of faith and I am so glad I did. It would take me forever to do.
I sent about 1200 pics and negatives to scan. I miss my pictures
now, but I will be so happy to have more flexibility with them.
Plus ScanCafe while they do send them off, they have a very secure
process, you aren't just shipping your individual box off to India.
Mine arrived safely in India a few days ago, so I am just waiting
for them to be scanned.
[ Annette33 ] I am ok with being behind in lessons, I know all this
will be here to look at again, and again, especially when I start
the digi aspect
[ AmySJ ] Gloria- I'd say go straight with what Stacy says. If you
need to tweak than you'll know when you need to make changes to
fit you. I think you'd know if something just wasn't going to work
for you.
[ Hsanders ] GloriaK i think how the system works for you comes
with time as you use it. I am sure I will be making tweaks to the
processes for make it fit for me.
[ nmkaren ] Scan Cafe is amazing. I sent all our slides just recently.
They do a great job of keeping you informed as to exactly where
your order is and the quality is really nice. These were slides
from my mom and dad's early years and my childhood. I am printing
8x10's and they are beautiful. I was aftraid to send to India as
well yet I figured they can't be in business if they keep losing
orders. I recommend them.
[ MelissaTX ] How long does it take once you've sent negatives to
ScanSafe?
[ stacy julian ] ckcgreen - Do you have category drawers yet? How
do you feel about triage?
[ Gloriak ] Stacy - I'm afraid if I don't make dups for my CD I
will never put anything in there. I am such a visual person and
I'm terrified of forgetting what I have if I can't see it. I love
love love flipping through my binders and have tons of ideas for
different connections. But until I scrap the original page I just
can't make myself move photos. Sorry.
[ nmkaren ] It takes about six weeks to get images online from Scan
Cafe. Seems like a long time however, as my husband pointed out,
I have wanted to do something with the slides for 18 years - six
weeks flew by
[ MichelleC ] I sent mine in at the beginning of March and my scans
should be done on April 11th. Then I get to pick what I want, I
assume after that it will be a few weeks before they get back to
me.
[ stacy julian ] "GeauxGirl,<br />
I'm picking on names I haven't seen. Have you scrapbooked from your
storage binders yet?"
[ AmySJ ] I have seen places where there's a van that comes to you
and scans your pictures. Not sure where all they have it but not
in rural East Texas. Hmm. . . Perhaps if DH takes this new job and
he travels to Austin, I'll look to see what they have there.
[ nonnysbooks ] I currently have a photo box filled with negative
strips that I want to send to ScanCafe (pics from Okinawa from 82-85
and the original photos have badly color shifted). Only thing stopping
me right now is that DH is out of work, so budget is extremely tight.
[ nmkaren ] My slides were back in my hands within ten days after
I ordered from the uploaded images
[ MichelleC ] You really can't beat the prices for ScanCafe. I looked
at this a few years ago and it would have cost me about $1,000 more
than now if I had as much scanned as I am doing now.
[ cgull1 ] It's been neat getting to know others through their scrapbook
pages. Stacy, my husband served a mission in Frankfurt too (from
the lesson material examples this week) We actually met in the area
when I worked in Mannheim and he was going to school in Heidelberg
a few years later. I like looking at the gallery pics, too!
[ ckcgreen ] I do have my category drawers! However, I have 9 years
of digital photos that I never printed. So, I am using the idea
of printing my Highlight folders to finally get those photos printed.
I hope that very soon I will have more photos that are printed so
I can actually fill my category drawers! Thanks for asking!
[ AmySJ ] See Gloria- I think you have an idea where at least for
know, you feel you need to tweak Stacy's instruction.
[ stacy julian ] GloriaK -- What I'm saying is just don't do it
now. Start scrapbooking from your binders and let the triage thing
go for now. If and when you have pictures left from an event that
you don't scrapbook, put them in the drawers. We just need to get
you using what you've set up so far, so some of your fears melt
away.
[ just jeani ] Keep seeing mention of Scan Safe. Is this being used
interchageably with Scan Cafe. Are the two different sites and if
so what's Scan Safe.
[ MelissaTX ] nonnysbooks - one positive thing about a tight budget
is that it makes you use your stash for scrapbooking! :>)
DH's current position is ending on April 30, so I've been thinking
about that a little.
[ stacy julian ] ckcgreen-- thanks for answering!
[ nmkaren ] I kept my eye out on the sight and signed up for Scan
Cafe's newsletter. I received a 25% off coupon for the entire order.
Watch for their deals.
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] AmySJ & Lycia - We're satelitte, too.
I feel your pain.
[ italgal ] @ Stacy. I have what I consider a 3-star photo from
this last Christmas. It came to me late, from my sister...and I've
already done my Christmas event LO's. Would you put this photo in
a SB or the CD??
[ AmySJ ] nonnysbooks and Melissa- I also think a tight budget gives
you a chance to focus on process instead of things.
[ MelissaTX ] oops - my mistake it should be Scan Cafe
[ Hsanders ] I did look at getting negatives scanned but when I
looked at sites I just could not afford it. Maybe I looked at the
wrong site.
[ AmySJ ] LOL Satellite Internet- I download most of my scrapbook
supplies to my phone but even still DH has to be so patient with
me as I still slow the internet all the time.
[ stacy julian ] cgull1-- I served in Heidleberg when the university
there was celebrating 600 years. I will never forget the feeling
of trying to wrap my brain around that. That school had essentially
been a school for 400 years longer than my country has been a country
-- crazy!
[ stacy julian ] italgal -- I would absolutely tuck this away in
my category drawers. Great question!
[ cgull1 ] Such history in Heidelberg. My husband was into photography
at the time and we have LOTS of photos of the castle.
[ AmySJ ] Hsanders- you can also scan negatives from home. . . just
means you have to do the work.
[ GeauxGirl ] Yes- storage binders are full of my pre digital prints
and do pull from them when I need something specific. I am an alum
and this year I am getting my digital images under control. Kayla
and her tutorials have been a HUGE help!
[ just jeani ] during spring break [for our class] will we still
get reminder emails? I'm afraid without a gentle nudge i'll simply
play hookey.
[ stacy julian ] GeauxGirl - good to know. So glad you're back!
[ MelissaTX ] I was so getting going on the triage, but then I scrapped
an event layout and triaged the extra photos. The next event layout
I did, I was able to triage a few of the photos first then do the
event layout, so it is getting easier.
[ LyciaK ] @AmySJ & MelissaTX - I had the lowest price plan
and went over my bandwidth limits a few times (which made me crazy),
I finally decided to spring for the extra $10/month, which almost
doubled my bandwidth. It's been SO worth it (and I am a real cheaps
[ Hsanders ] Yeah I Amy its just my scanner does not like to be
used for too long - extremelly tempramental!
[ stacy julian ] justjeani - yes, you'll still get an email, a welcome
note (a fun assignment) and a little something else!
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] Gloriak - I would say just jump in! Nothing
is set in stone and chances are you won't know how to it's going
to work for you until you are in the midst of it. Start with one
SD card and go from uploading to your computer all the way through
printing. Figure out what worked and what didn't and then make changes
when you upload the second SD card. Just do it! It will be great!!!
;)
[ Barb in AK ] I have negatives with photo index cards in cold storage.
Some of my negatives did not get photo index cards. Do you think
I should take those negatives in, get photo index cards AND a cd
of the photos, too? I'm not thinking of getting anything "reprinted"--just
want the index cards for reference.
[ MonicaMcNeill ] MelissaTX that is great :)
[ just jeani ] Stacy - thank goodness. Would hate to lose the momentum
we've built up.
[ stacy julian ] MelissaTX - it does get easier. So glad you've
pick up on this already!
[ LyciaK ] @scrapbookgirl71 - great advice!
[ stacy julian ] Barb in AK - sure, you could have index cards made!
[ stacy julian ] "Tatty,<br />
How are you doing? Have you started to fine tune your subcategories
yet?"
[ Hsanders ] After talking to you guys I think I really need to
set about getting my scanner up and going though my negatives.
[ MonicaMcNeill ] Barb in AK - I would spend your time in class
focusing on the lessons. If you don't intend on reprinting these
photos & they are truly cold storage I don't see this investment
in time or money giving you any immediate benefit. You can always
come back to it later :)
[ stacy julian ] dawn5100 -- any thoughts? Questions?
[ Gloriak ] scrapboogirl71 I know you are right. I have to let go
of the "I might make a mistake" mentality and
just move! I am going to print from shutterfly this week. I am.
I will. I said it "out loud" so now I have to
right?!
[ just jeani ] the triage process is awesome, I just love this part
of the class. My downfall comes when I look at my hundreds of completed
layouts [now pulled from their old chronoligical albums] and I try
to decide where they go and how to break them down. Four categories
doesn't seem like enough. Are more categories or sub divisions coming?
[ AmySJ ] OK Gloria you told us all you were going to print. . .
I expect a post on the message board when you do it!
[ Gloriak ] This is the first chat where I haven't finished in frusterated
tears so I must be making some kind of progress right?!
[ dawn5100 ] I have got a couple of highlight photos printed and
in binders. Triaged some of those.
[ cgull1 ] Hsanders--I did a lot of scanning several years ago.
I found the digital images just this last week as I'm still trying
to corral all my digital pics. I'm still trying to find some. There
is some waiting as things scan, so it's not too bad to work on if
there is something to listen to or work on on the side.
[ sleepyhead ] need a little clarification please - if we are supposed
to pull our most scrappable photos for our CDs then why are we also
supposed to take leftovers from our storage binders after we've
moved and scrapped what we want - im ust be missing something here,
please help?
[ MonicaMcNeill ] I'm planning on sending off my "already
scrapped" pictures of my son when he was an infant. With
the new baby coming I can already now I'm going to want to be able
to revisit these pictures while going through it again with our
new addition.
[ AmySJ ] I think we first timers get so excited about organizing
the old stuff that we tend to focus on it rather than getting the
system in place with what we already have.
[ JustJo ] Hi everyone, I've missed a few Chats recently so marked
this on my calendar. However, didn't realise your clocks had changed
already (change next weekend in the U.K) Still managed to quickly
read most comments - I'll be looking out for the transcripts again!
[ MonicaMcNeill ] just jeani - if you are happy with your completed
albums, i would just start going forward. It's not necessary to
break apart what you've already accomplished :)
[ Sabine H ] Does shutterfly provide service for Canada? Without
too much 'shipping fees' ?
[ stacy julian ] just jeani - did this week's lesson help at all?
You really can decide how many sections your library albums need.
I would start moving the really obvious layouts first. Like, perhaps
all the 'far way' places. Once you get all of those moved and group
together you'll have a better sense of what sections you might need.
Or start with holiday pages or everyday life -- does that make sense?
I found the answers always come in the doing!
[ Hsanders ] Hmm never thought of multi tasking on the scanning
side. How stuopid of me! Maybe ten minutes after work each evening
and I shall gradually get through them - yep thats what I am going
to do.
[ AmySJ ] Jo, don't get me started on that time change.
[ LyciaK ] @MonicaMcNeill - I didn't know you were pregnant - congratulations!!!!
[ nonnysbooks ] The reason I want to send to ScanCafe, rather than
scan the negatives myself, is these negatives are 28 years old,
and I know the pictures from these negatives had significant color
shift. so ScanCafe seems to be the better option, to get the color
correction done at the same time.
[ AmySJ ] Beyond Shutterfly Share sites, I'm curious how the rest
of you share your photos etc.
[ sleepyhead ] i was definitely nervous about moving my LOs, but
I definitely had the most lightbulb moments by physically moving
and making piles - I can't wait to get my new albums set up!!!
[ stacy julian ] AmySJ - I have a few galleries on Flickr, and I'm
*trying* to use Shuttercal.com -- then of course, there's my blog.
I'd love to hear from others as well!
[ MonicaMcNeill ] LyciaK - Yes :) we are expecting another little
boy June 3rd!!! Beyond excited!
[ AmySJ ] I don't feel quite like I got all my layouts in the right
categories- but I know I can move them later when I pinpoint more
about why this LO or that LO might fit better.
[ just jeani ] "Monica - I've already broken down the albums
- I want to get rid of chronological. Never like it in the first
place, just didn't have the tools to make a change. <br />
Stacy - I confess, the lesson came in on Thursday and I was gone
all day and yesterday too. I only glanced at it and thought it was
primarily about section dividers. Your comment has already brought
clarity. thanks"
[ stacy julian ] sleepyhead -- that's how it was for me too. I learned
so much that very first day that I sat on my floor and started making
piles of layouts. I will NEVER forget that feeling.
[ LyciaK ] @MonicaMcNeill - so happy for you!
[ Hsanders ] I dont really share the photos as my family are really
not interested in seeng them.
[ sleepyhead ] AmySJ: blog, email, shutterfly share site, christmas
photobooks & good 'ole snail mail
[ MonicaMcNeill ] AmySJ - you've got it ;)
[ AprilFL ] AmySJ - I burn a CD for family each year too - those
that don't use the internet much. At least they get a CD a year
and nothing at all.
[ stacy julian ] Any last questions that someone is dying to ask?
[ SandyShutterbug ] Sleepyhead, The "most scrapable pictures"
are the ones that we print and put in our storage binders. From
there we remove some for the drawers. I often pull individual photos
that strike me for personality pages and put them in the drawers
right away, but others come from the leftovers after we've scrapped
a layout or two from an event.
[ nonnysbooks ] I've triaged through my storage binder, and spent
some time each evening this week trying to re-visit my "supply
binders", and still only have about 30 pics for the CDs,
and they are almost all Us/People pics. The Places and Things seem
to be what we just didn't take pics of, or I'm still seeing them
as events. So as of right now, I almost have more category dividers
than picutres
[ AmySJ ] I share some of mine on my blog. I'm hoping to share more.
. . perhaps highlights of my highlights. And, I have some Layouts
but plan to put all the ones my binders on there.
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] Yes, GloriaK! Now you HAVE to!! ;)
[ AmySJ ] I can't believe it's been an hour!
[ Helen Anne ] I keep struggling with the split between US and People
we Love. I live by myself and keep changing my mind as to where
to put my parents and my sister. I'm almost to the point where I
just have a people pile.
[ MonicaMcNeill ] just jeani- in that case just go for it :) you
can always move them around if it doesn't feel right after a few
months
[ sleepyhead ] thanks Sandy, that makes sense
[ stacy julian ] Helen Anne -- you might just need a "People"
pile. Listen to your gut.
[ LyciaK ] @stacyjulian - no burning questions, but want to say
how much I appreciate these chats and am thankful when I can make
it to one. I always learn something new.
[ AmySJ ] Oh and my blog feeds over to facebook. . . So my mom,
cousins, and friends now where they can find things at and when
something new is posted. Not comfie posting pics on Facebook.
[ KimberlyAnn ] I had already forgotten that we flagged our layouts
in lesson 1 - I'm hopeful that will make the sorting into categories
easy!
[ sleepyhead ] doing the title page and section page exercise really
solidified my subcategories for me - I stayed up til 3am working
on them so I could post in the gallery!
[ stacy julian ] LyciaK - I'm glad to hear this. Thanks for coming!
[ AmySJ ] Helen- what about All About Me, All About My Family, and
then People We Love
[ mb2009 ] thanks Stacy. I'm going to try to get back on track before
the next chat :)
[ nessa b. ] AmySJ- recently been sharing via facebook
[ MonicaMcNeill ] Helen Anne - why don't you just combine the two
albums for now?
[ cgull1 ] Amy SJ--if you get over the comfort level with posting
pics on Facebook, it's really easy from your iPhone!
[ stacy julian ] "Thanks April and Monica for being here.<br
/>
Happy Saturday everyone!"
[ Hsanders ] I have not split an people and us pile. I have just
tried to split into different "familys" but kept
them all in the same album. (if that makes sense?)
[ GeauxGirl ] @Thanks Stacy!
[ AprilFL ] Yep, helen, and along with those suggestions, as your
family grows, this can grow and change with you too.
[ italgal ] Great chat, girls! Enjoy your weekend!
[ AmySJ ] Thanks Stacy!
[ Barb in AK ] happy Spring Break everyone---Gotta get ready for
work!
[ AprilFL ] your welcome Stacy! Off to soccer pictures and game
soon!
[ Annette33 ] Barb, when is work?
[ ckytang ] can we have a support group when class is over?
[ Barb in AK ] 11-7 today and tomorrow.
[ Meggie ] Thanks Stacy, will just keep plugging along and looking
forward to what to do with the Heritage pictures
[ sleepyhead ] ckkytang - that sounds like a good idea!
[ Hsanders ] Thanks everyone for a great chat. :)
[ Annette33 ] barb, we need to take time to chat at yahoo about
this, someday
[ LyciaK ] @ckytang - there is a Yahoo group for alumni.
[ stacy julian ] "Taft and sleep-over friend are eating Kix.
I just sang the Kix song by heart -- weird how that happens! <br
/>
Good bye everyone."
[ Helen Anne ] I'll keep plugging away at it. Thanks for the ideas.
[ MonicaMcNeill ] Have a great weekend everyone :) My son is off
with his grandparents & I'm off to my first weekend sew
with the Dallas Modern Quilt Guild to celebrate National Quilting
Day :) Hoping to get little Owen's quilt almost done!!
[ sleepyhead ] hmmm, Stacy I hear a musically inspired scrapbook
page coming on!
[ ckytang ] thanks lyciak i'll look for it
[ cropnmom ] Bye all, I'm off to get dd ready for her play...postponed
from last night due to a car "parked" in the school!
talk about photo ops!
[ stacy julian ] We are working on an LOM support group -- for a
year now. But, it is happening!
[ KimberlyAnn ] Bye Stacy and everyone - thank you!
[ MonicaMcNeill ] cxkytang - wouldn't that be fantastic ;)
[ AmySJ ] Have a great weekend everybody! Off to finish my last
DYL assignments :( and :) all at the same time.
[ Barb in AK ] Yesssss! About the support group! :-)
[ ckytang ] Stacy and Monica that would be great!
[ AprilFL ] Monica, I love the name you've chosen! I think it "fits"
with your family, if that makes any sense!
[ Sabine H ] yes ,,, sign me up for the support group when it happens...
would be wonderful!
[ MonicaMcNeill ] Thanks April :) We told the inlaws last night
so I'm hoping to post about it soon!
[ nessa b. ] "thanks for all the great info.<br />
"see" you guys next time!"
[ Annette33 ] lovin' this process!!
[ SandyShutterbug ] Godbye all. Off to see my 15yo DD in a badminton
invitational.
[ AprilFL ] take care everyone! Have a fabulous weekend!
[ nessa b. ] AmySJ- so, any tricks to copying/saving pics off facebook
to get them the regular size, not mini?
[ sleepyhead ] ditto Annette - all of my efforts lately seem so
purposeful and inspired - just can't beat that feeling!
[ just jeani ] Happy Spring everyone. Ooooh, I'd love a support
group too. Sun is out - time to get outside. Thanks to Stacy, coaches
and all of you for making this such an awesome experience. Nothing
beats a group of energetic women for inspiration
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] Happy Saturday to you,Stacy! |
