[ Jodeen ]
hello
[ krizbeekrafty ] hi!
[ mob ] Good Evening all, I'm psyched to be doing this.
[ Showme ] I'm so new at this I just figure out how to communicate
from my end! I'm very excited too!
[ Showme ] How long do the chat sessions last?
[ nanajane ] I haven't had a chance to print any of the material
yet so I am going to just sit back and listen. I am really glad
to be a part of this class.
[ nanajane ] I just got into the class today.
[ nanajane ] Is this just for the students or will instructors be
on here too?
[ nanajane ] "I just realized this is on PST duh.....<br
/>
No wonder no one is here."
[ Showme ] Is this audio or just written communication with the
instructors and students? I'm not getting any audio.
[ ScrappinMom4 ] Hello Everyone!
[ Grandmaman Demers ] We'll see you again at 10 p.m. eastern time!
[ ScrappinMom4 ] Yep, just noticed the PST, I'll be back if I can
stay awake to chat by then! :)
[ Becky C ] hi earlybirds.
[ Manda ] Hey there - just excited and trying to get everything
figured out!
[ MeMeG ] Hey...just jotting down the chat times.

[ Becky C ] I agree. I have been listening to the digital downloads
[ Paparazzi_Mom ] Hey all!!!
[ Megster ] hi :)
[ diney ] Sorry so late
[ diney ] Is everything over with?
[ Terri in BC ] It doesn't start for another hour and 15 minutes
(7pm PST, 10pm EST)
[ Kindteacher ] Oh thank goodness! I was thinking I missed it! :)
[ nanajane ] I wonder how long it will take to get my stickie notes
in the mail. How long after you all paid did it take to receive
your stuff??
[ oh yvonne ] so...we all just sittin here waiting? ;o)
[ MelissaGross ] It sure looks that way. I have another window open
also and am still purusing all the great stuff in the classroom.
[ pollyanna ] yep, and listening to stacy's voice ;)... trying to
get "caught up" lol
[ oh yvonne ] uh oh Pollyanna, you said 'caught up!" that's
a bad word here, LOL!

next DYL assignment.

[ pennyscraps ] Anticipatory of change
[ mb2009 ] excited but feeling behind already as at work all day
[ nicci90630 ] slightly overwhelmed, but definitely excited to be
headed somewhere!
[ princessbird ] Like I forgot to do my homework.
[ Francis ] Just Happy Stacy! It is a great step for my memories
!
[ krizbeekrafty ] ready to get some layouts done!
[ nonnysbooks ] Excited and a bit overwhelmed
[ Amandamartig ] Thank you Stacy!
[ AmySJ ] Excited. . . Overwhelmed (just 'cause I don't have time
to catch up with all tonight)
[ artiste ] hi stacy!!!
[ Stephdo ] Excited, overwhelmed
[ liljune25 ] So excited! Putting sticky notes right now.
[ natlhol ] Thank you!
[ NicolleT ] So ready for a change.
[ ms.tw ] AWWW. Thank you Stacy!
[ ckytang ] Can't wait to get going!
[ tshay ] overwhelmed & excited
[ SuzanneB ] fighting with my new Photoshop Elements program
[ stacy julian ] Oh no -- we've got "inspired and welcomed"
sitting right next to "lost and overwhelmed" and
I bet there are a few in between.
[ Amandamartig ] Yes - ready for a change!
[ scrappyknitter ] Thanks Stacy
[ KathiL ] Ready to reprioritize and get my act together!
[ Cherri :) ] Wow, thanks Stacy! We're excited to be with you!
[ ands19 ] excited, overwhelmed. Ready for a change too.
[ bethgholmes ] No longer stressed about being caught up -- now
worried about mis-categorizing a layout. ;-) Still excited to get
started
[ Candace Ann ] I'm with the one who said she feels like she forgot
to do her homework!
[ krizbeekrafty ] went through all my recent layouts...missing a
lot of whys
[ stacy julian ] "Let's start with lost and overwhelmed.<br
/>
Is everyone finding their way around the classroom OK?"
[ ScrapOnMuchJava ] Really excited to get to a place where I don't
feel overwhelmed anymore...like I've kind of got some sense of order
[ Maureen ] Who - do you put who on all of your layouts. Any creative
approaches. I find it gets so redundant that I am leaving it out
a little too much.
[ Sabine H ] whew... just got in from work.. so excited to begin.
[ krizbeekrafty ] the classroom is organized great
[ Amandamartig ] Classroom is so easy to navigate and inviting
[ scrappyknitter ] yep
[ Kaly ] very easy to get around. thanks.
[ pennyscraps ] Yes - there is so much to take in on the MB's...
[ HeidiM ] It is set up fabulously.Very user friendly!
[ Paparazzi_Mom ] I just got signed up....so my homework is in process..but
not compete
[ Annette33 ] this site is really user friendly
[ AmySJ ] so far, yes
[ MeMeG ] Yes...very well done
[ ALtLCountryHeart ] Excited to jump in and to learn to let it all
go and just enjoy the hobby.
[ krizbeekrafty ] the handouts are awesome
[ txpns54 ] I love the classroom
[ scrapchris ] I think I'm that person you were talking about in
your audio message - the long time scrapbooker that wasn't so sure
about your new ideas! ;-)
[ ladotter ] the classroom is great
[ pennyscraps ] And this middle aged gal thinks those titles are
cute but tiny
[ angeljade ] The classroom is terrific - lots of information and
easy to navigate.
[ SharynC ] Very easy to navigate
[ krizbeekrafty ] loved the peter jennings inspiration
[ dawn5100 ] classroom looks great and easy to navigate.
[ mommystamps ] The resources in this classroom are wonderful! The
Digital piece ROCKS!!
[ ScrapOnMuchJava ] Very user friendly. REally like it!
[ Leigh-Ann ] Love the digital stuff spent the day setting up my
files!
[ Franci ] the classroom is great and easy to navigate
[ nmkaren ] The classroom is very well designed and easy to navigate
- Thanks
[ Amandamartig ] Hey this 28 year old things the titles are a little
tiny too! :)
[ natlhol ] Loved all the audio messages so far!
[ trilatius ] the classroom is great
[ midwestgirl ] Love the way the forums are set up!
[ pennyscraps ] I listened to the message twice - so amazing. Love
those stickies too but I want to hoard them.
[ Candace Ann ] The peter jennings thing hit home with me. it ALL
clicked.
[ jamie in pa ] i second the comment about the peter jennings audio.
that really put it all into perspective for me.
[ ands19 ] Loved everything so far!
[ Showme ] Showme
[ stacy julian ] "scrapchris -- lots of new ideas in this class.
try and remember that most of your 'old' ideas aren't working so
well, OK?<br />
Then remember that I won't ask you to do anything that I haven't
done and tested -- that seems to help!"
[ Amandamartig ] Stacy - will you be doing videos of yourself, Zielske
style?
[ MelH ] Love the variety of print and audio
[ ckytang ] You've convinced me to abandon chronological!
[ midwestgirl ] I will be listening to the message again. and again.
[ tshay ] finding my around well. site seems to be well organized
and easy to navigate.
[ SharonMeaney ] I've long since abandoned chronological but am
looking to re-work my theme albums
[ nonnysbooks ] Not having a problem navigating the classroom, but
34 years of my own pics plus older family pics, and only 8 months
of scrapbooking has me way overwhelmed
[ NicolleT ] I am overwhelmed with the chat board. It keeps jumping
around before I can read complete sentences. Any advice?
[ pennyscraps ] The iPhoto stuff seems great too - can't wait to
get tagging and flagging love the morph to more digi on photos
[ Kaly ] Your "reminiscing" story with your mother
hit home to me. Makes SO much sense!
[ natlhol ] The part about your conversation with your mom was what
struck me the most and is what convinced me that chronological isn't
working for me.
[ scrappyknitter ] am I going to have problems missing the next
2 weeks?
[ scrapchris ] Stacy - I can do that. I met you years ago (1999?)when
you taught a few classes at a scrapbook store near Seattle. I trust
you. :-)
[ KathiL ] The digital forum where we can ask our particulars about
the software program we are using is a little confusing. It is hard
to know where to post a question and then beable to find it again.
[ Francis ] I just love the transcript Stacy...for me it is a great
tool, because I am not a native English speaker!
[ SharonMeaney ] YES -- I loved that story about your mom. Totally!
[ shamrock ] Loving that you've added the digital component. Kayla's
already been helpful!
[ MonicaMcNeill ] NicolleT : The chats go fast but there will be
a transcript later so you can go back to see if you missed anything
if you like :)
[ Ann in FL ] I'm overwhelmed with 40 years of my own photos, many
faded and scattered from negatives.
[ stacy julian ] The best thing you can do is focus this week on
this week's lesson. I would spend just 15 to 30 mins a day on the
photo sorting thing -- we'll do that again next week ...
[ erikah ] any advice on how to manage/organize the handouts/printouts?
I feel like there will be a lot more coming...need to organize now
so I can refer back to later
[ steph s. ] Loved hearing how silly catching up is. As a brand
new scrapper with a two year-old and one on the way I needed to
here that. I felt "behind" before I even started.
[ Terri in BC ] I'm struggling with the highlight photos. I have
no problem deleting the duds, etc. but struggle with paring down
my highlights. Any suggestions?
[ Paparazzi_Mom ] I really want to stay....but I have to get going
on some homework....I am 100% commited to this class...but I am
behind!!! So I will be creaping in and out!!!
[ Franci ] looking forward to getting more pictures scrapbooked.
It seems that I have only been making gifts because I felt so far
behind on my own scrapbooks.
[ kellyd ] loved the Peter Jennings story. Having worked in television
most of my career it was something I could really relate to.
[ ShellBelle76 ] 15 to 30 minutes a day - i can do that... it's
just so easy to feel like i have to do everything, and do it all
RIGHT NOW!
[ Amandamartig ] I have a binder with all my handouts, etc. and
I am tabing it so I can find stuff
[ MelH ] I have years of photos to organize and no albums done;
I have just been buying albums and supplies and have block to get
started
[ Skier ] excited to learn tricks for organizing digital photos
[ sleepyhead ] looking forward to creating pages that really "mean
something"
[ pennyscraps ] So (whining) we really have to go through all those
chronological old school style albums with our stickies???
[ Barb in AK ] I agree with Penny....The tags are quite small.
[ stacy julian ] This week, focus on just spending time with your
scrapbooks (the finished ones) or spend time browsing magazines
and online galleries -- I need you to know what type of scrapbooking
you've been doing, so that you know what to keep, what to walk away
from and what you want to do more of in the future -- any questions
about the flagging exercise?
[ SharonMeaney ] Yes, me too -- tips on organizing digitally. Good
stuff, but I haven't yet read through that forum yet.
[ krizbeekrafty ] wish the chat window was bigger
[ erikah ] amandamartig - tabbing it how? by week #? by topic?
[ MonicaMcNeill ] erikah: I would suggest a binder organized by
lessons. I'll try to post a picture of mine in the gallery.
[ krizbeekrafty ] the flagging went easier than I thought
[ natlhol ] Where are the forums? I'm missing them.
[ SandyS ] Stacy - this will be great have been looking forward
to this since Scrap Pink in Huron, SD I enjoyed meeting you and
am ready to go...........
[ nmkaren ] I am back for a second run and was organizing a bit
before class started. I am amazed at how much organization I accomplished
last year that I had not even really given myself credit for yet.
I have now and can't wait to see what this year holds.
[ Amandamartig ] Tabbing by lesson rigt now.
[ AmySJ ] I'm really looking forward to going through my old layouts.
Glad I'm digi though- I can do it by tagging on my computer in Bridge
[ diltsy ] where do I put my "artistic" pages?
Ones that show fall colors, or fireworks, or Christmas cards...
[ krizbeekrafty ] I only did recent layouts though, over the past
year or so
[ TracyBzz ] penny - why don't you want to go through and flag your
old chronologicaly albums? you'll learn alot about your journaling
style etc
[ tshay ] agree - the peter jennings audio was great. knowing how
this all sort of came about to you and how you put it all together
- so insightful.
[ Amandamartig ] Stacy - are you going to do any videos, like Cathy
Zielske does in DYL? Or, mostly audio?
[ pennyscraps ] I have 50 albums...sigh...and not many of them make
me happy...
[ Franci ] I don't think I have enough done to flag. My kids 1st
year albums (they are 10 and 12) and a few vacation albums.
[ TracyBzz ] diltsy - 'artistic' pages would go in things
[ ShellBelle76 ] as a beginning scrapbooker, i only have 5 completed
pages! flagging was done within about 12 seconds ;)
[ KathiL ] NATLHOL - The forums are at the very top of the screen
the third scrapbook over from the left.
[ scrappyknitter ] seems like all my albums are from vacations
[ krizbeekrafty ] @pennyscraps... :(
[ tshay ] Taking it week by week makes it easier for me to process.
[ Amandamartig ] 50 albums! WOWOWO! That should make you happy!
Dont beat yourself up!
[ stacy julian ] As far as classroom materials go. I have a big
notebook with a page protector/divider for each lesson. I simply
put all of the handouts behind each divider. I would keep it simple
-- there will be worksheets you need to keep clipped on your clipboard
while you work on them -- but otherwise, all handouts, etc. (transcripts)
can just go in a big notebook!
[ TracyBzz ] Stacy doesn't do videos like Cathy Z but there are
some slideshows
[ midwestgirl ] diltsy-my husband does lots of artsy photography.
I keep this in Things, which I retitled "Things We Love"
[ artiste ] If I don't have a scanner then the only way to submit
pages to the forum is if I do digital pages, right?
[ pennyscraps ] But on the plus side I have a new iMac and raring
to go with iPhoto and embracing change
[ steph s. ] With you ShelleBelle.
[ ms.tw ] any suggestions for getting up to date on all the digital
info?. I am feeling really digital illiterate.
[ steffyj ] Stacy = in all of your system, do you ever do a theme
album like a trip etc?
[ Amandamartig ] Thanks TracyBzz
[ MonicaMcNeill ] natlhol: The forums are at the top, the third
from the left binder :)
[ Maribeth ] Stacey, just curious, how many have enrolled in the
class? Wondering how in the world you manage "life"!
[ krizbeekrafty ] @artiste...I just take pics of mine
[ kellyd ] Most if not all of my finished albums are theme albums
from vacations. It seems like the stickie assignment may be useless
for me. Any suggestions?
[ erikah ] amandamartig & monicamcneil --thanks! that helps
[ Barb in AK ] NicelleT--I am not used to chatboards either.....This
moves really fast! By the time I've typed this, many, many, many
messages will have zoomed by....Now I have to back up and read the
messages---I thought I was behind in my scrapping, but THIS takes
the cake ;-)
[ TracyBzz ] penny - you don't like them because of difficult topics
or because you think your style is dated?
[ SharonMeaney ] Artiste ~ take a digital photo of your layout
[ natlhol ] Thanks for answering my question everyone!
[ Maureen ] Do you put the Who on every layout. I noticed I am leaving
it out quite a bit because it feels redundant.
[ stacy julian ] There have been lots of questions about where pages
will go --- we are NOT there yet. All I need you to do this week
is look back and assess the topics you've been scrapbooking. Are
you scrapbooking strictly events? ...
[ krizbeekrafty ] I mostly leave out the Why
[ Lynsee ] Yep, just event. No everyday life pages here.
[ stacy julian ] How often are you scrapbooking about relationships,
special places, traditions, everyday life stuff that happens in
between holidays and birthday and the other big stuff? ...
[ MomToBostons ] Yep, I scrapbook events almost exclusively. And
trips.
[ Amandamartig ] I am scrapping a lot of EVENTS and PEOPLE. Need
more history and feelings and relationships
[ KathiL ] artiste - you can take a picture of your work with your
camera and upload the picture that way.
[ Sabine H ] question about the digital sorting... do you make folders
in your 'windows explorer' as well as flagging/tagging/or albums
in iphoto or photoshop elements 8? what do you suggests... currently
have duplicate photos on my windows hard drive but haven't used
the tagging thing in pSE8 yet..
[ Candace Ann ] when i went to the store to buy my 3" binder,
I decided that 1 1/2" would do because there was NO WAY
I'd need one as big as # inches! I see now that i was wrong. :)
[ krizbeekrafty ] birthday parties...where do YOU put them? I was
thinking things, DH says US
[ Stephdo ] Hi Cousin Nancy!
[ Amandamartig ] Oh, and I need a lot more everyday stuff documented
[ liljune25 ] I have tons of pages under US (mostly my kids) and
rarely PEOPLE. A good mix of the other two categories.
[ Franci ] yes mainly events.
[ scrappyknitter ] not at all - just vacations it seems
[ angeljade ] So interesting - I am finding I scrap "Places"
and "Where" the least.
[ diltsy ] No, because I have been reading your articles/blog and
taking classes from Cathy Z., but my least common is US personality
[ stacy julian ] Don't try too hard to make a connection between
what we are doing this week and what we will be doing (eventually)
with layouts moving forward. Tricky, I know -- but again, that is
coming.
[ MonicaMcNeill ] artiste: you can also just take pictures of your
layouts to put in the gallery
[ pennyscraps ] Not very often...but on my personal assessment I
did put that I am very good at telling stories - and I guess I am
here b/c I want to be more story driven AND I want to get my hands
around all my digi photos
[ AmySJ ] I haven't got many if any birthday layouts LOL! And only
a few holiday.
[ Francis ] Stacy, you can oriented my strengths and weeknessess
scrapbooking analysis?
[ TracyBzz ] flag birthday parties as US. but it's your system do
what you want
[ ands19 ] "I used up all my "things" and
hardly anything else. And hardly any journaling. That speaks VOLUMES!!!
<br />
<br />
I did do 365 last year and I am so glad I did. Focused on so many
of the everyday things and Journaled!!"
[ Francis ] you can give me some categories? or examples
[ kellyd ] Artiste- you can take a photo of your layouts and post
them that way.
[ SharonMeaney ] Events, People, in albums by theme: Halloween,
Christmas, Trips etc Very little "Why"
[ krizbeekrafty ] I also feel that I am not a good storyteller.
not my strong suit at all
[ Amandamartig ] Stacy - how many people are in this class?
[ pennyscraps ] And one thing I know w/o opening any albums is that
I almost never have done a LO about people we love
[ sleepyhead ] I found that the pages I like best document all 5
Ws
[ KathiL ] I mostly have done events/obviously I'm missing the point!
[ Maureen ] Any tips for those of us always behind the camera? One
thing that is missing from my Library is me.
[ krizbeekrafty ] I had one lo about people besides my immediate
family.
[ shamrock ] Everyday things and people are what I scrap the most
[ Terri in BC ] I am good at everyday events and journaling, but
my biggest problem is finishing what I started - even as simple
as a single page.
[ krizbeekrafty ] @sleepyhead...me too!
[ Ames_ ] Could you elaborate on the "Photos I Love Albums"
mentioned in your Photo Freedom book?
[ bcre8uv ] That's a pretty cool realization, sleepyhead! :)
[ nonnysbooks ] I started scrapping last summer, the one album I
completed was a gift for my Dad (a retrospect of why he has been
an important part of our extended family over the last 11 years
(key family events). Other than that I only have a handful of pages
for my grandson's album (birth to first birthday).
[ erikah ] ditto, Maureen!
[ sego1997 ] I have always know I need to scraobook everyday events!
Now I am realizing how much I am leaving out by not doing so.
[ pennyscraps ] My biggest weakness is lack of focus and desire
for perfection keep me from doing very much at all
[ MelH ] Maureen...same here...where am I?
[ stacy julian ] If you'll read the handout --- you'll see that
I am not super consistent with my 5 Ws -- one thing you'll come
to appreciate about the LOM system is that you will be able to choose
to leave off some information (intentionally) because you'll know
that you have a system in place that encourages a broader approach
to your life story -- you won't have to record every detail of W
on every page -- make sense?
[ shamrock ] Maureen, I'm missing a lot too
[ tshay ] I'm with you amandamartin -- events & people.
But I want relationships, everyday stuff
[ txpns54 ] I'm not a good storyteller. That is my weakness.
[ Kaly ] I hear you, Maureen! And everytime I get my husband to
take one of me, it always turns out terrible.
[ Lynse ] Maureen-I have the same problem. All my pics are of everyone
else..
[ txpns54 ] I want to scrap about the relationships, too.
[ midwestgirl ] Very little in All About Us. It's just my husband
and me. But that's no excuse!
[ mommystamps ] ditto! I'm not in any of my photos!
[ Amandamartig ] I have pics of me, but am so critical of how I
look, I don't always want to use them. Must break this
[ ShellBelle76 ] everything (my few pages!) is about us and things
we do - nothing about people we love or places we go
[ scrapchris ] Kaly - that's what girlfriends are for!
[ sleepyhead ] I want to make layouts that make me cry (in a good
way) :-)
[ krizbeekrafty ] @stacy I am glad you clarified about the 5 W's,
I wasn't sure if you were suggesting that they all be on every LO
[ ands19 ] Maureen, I find that I am starting to just hand the camera
over and tell someone to take a picture of me.
[ Amandamartig ] MMMM sleepyhead, me too!!!!
[ stacy julian ] Try this week just to look for trends, like "wow.
I almost never write journaling about WHY I love someone, or do
something or go somewhere" -- most of the time it's really
easy to capture the facts -- and it's the feelings that get left
off or at least do not get explored very often.
[ KelliM ] I started doing the post-it exercise with my husbands
help and I noticed just how many theme albums I actually have from
trips and such. When I do weekend crops, where I find it easiest
to get the majority of my cropping done, I find it easierr to pack
up for one them, so this is how I find myself scrapping. Now that
I look back, I am missing alot of the little things and the everyday...
[ Annette33 ] most everything focuses on my girls, a trip, a holiday
[ pennyscraps ] I also have this fear that having only boys that
what I do now someday won't matter....
[ AmySJ ] My DH is learning. . . We were looking at our 365 and
I was getting left out. . . He took a few today and I actually scrapbooked
them for DYL
[ natlhol ] Kaly, Make a lo about the terrible photos. Make it like
a "joke" It could be a fun addition to your scrapbooks.
[ diltsy ] Midwestgirl, that's it exactly. No kids, just us. Very
little "about us".
[ nancyr5213 ] I suggest using the timer function on most digital
camera and a tripod to get into more of your photos
[ shamrock ] Why is hard for me to include
[ steph s. ] I'm backwards, I love doing everyday stuff and journaling.
I get stalled scrapping big events.I think I'm afraid it won't be
good enough?
[ Maribeth ] found my journaling to be more factual and less personal,
I want to grow in my journaling to be more relational than factual.
[ angeljade ] My biggest weakness appears to be scrapbooking only
the positive - never (or rarely) exploring life's trials...
[ Franci ] I am not in many photos either. I realized in reviewing
the pictures for the prework...I was not in any of the Christmas
pictures on Christmas Day.
[ scrapchris ] Penny - someday those boys will get married and have
kids, and even if they don't appreciate it now, they will!
[ Terri in BC ] @pennyscraps - but your future DILs will love you!
[ tshay ] yes sleepyhead
[ shamrock ] Right there w/ you pennyscraps
[ princessbird ] Where do blogs fit in. While everyday is not represented
in my scrapbooks, it is on my blog.
[ stacy julian ] See ... great comments and observations already.
This is great!
[ Amandamartig ] Maribeth - so hard for me to balance facts and
emotions...my oCD side wants facts!
[ sleepyhead ] steph - good enough won't matter in 10 years :-)
[ MomToBostons ] I find that I don't want to journal about bad events/
phases/relationships -- don't want to be reminded of those feelings.
[ pollyanna ] I have to say - since starting LOM 2 years ago, my
layouts are more meaningful... and so is my life - THANKS STACY
[ Kaly ] Thanks everyone! It's usually not the ME that is terrible.
It's usually that he only catches one eye of our son. Or the side
of his face.
[ natlhol ] Pennyscraps...it matters more than you know b/c it makes
you more aware. I bet you parent differently now that you scrap.
I bet you are more appreciative. Do it for you and they will love
it, too.
[ pennyscraps ] I did get DH a simple point and shoot camera for
xmas so he can {maybe} photograph me more
[ midwestgirl ] Pennyscraps, boys do want to read about themselves.
My 25 year old son still will look at scrapbooks.
[ TracyBzz ] pollyanna - yeah for more meaningful layouts.
[ busybean ] When we have family portraits done I ask for a few
of just me...then I have a few decent pictures of me to include
in my pages and not the ones of me in my PJ's with my eyes half
shut that DH likes to take!
[ diltsy ] I don't think I understand why versus what
[ Lynse ] Pennyscraps, as an alumni.. LOM will help you get over
scrapbooking for others.
[ MonicaMcNeill ] pennyscraps: your boys will love what you do because
you did it & in a way you are leaving a bit of you behind
for them & their children :)
[ pennyscraps ] pollyanna - how appropriate that you would cheer
us with that encouragement!! ;-)
[ sleepyhead ] @busybean... great idea!
[ tshay ] yes maribeth - me to.
[ italgal ] I love how this class is making me think about HOW and
WHY I choose to make a LO!
[ sleepyhead ] @italgal - me too!
[ stacy julian ] steph s -- I'm a like you. I tend to put off scrapbooking
the 'big' stuff and spend my time on the everyday things. I don't
think I've scrapbooking Christmas in my library albums for 5 years
-- I love doing this exercise every year, so that I can realize
what I'm up to and what I want to do a little differently! I'm looking
forward to seeing your least/common layouts in the gallery.
[ pennyscraps ] I hope...but still sometimes I waffle...what to
do, what to remember, what to share, what to tell
[ stacy julian ] busybean -- smart girl getting photos of YOU!
[ krizbeekrafty ] stacy, on the topic of why, do you Why on a birthday
layout?
[ mb2009 ] should we participate in both Thurs and Satchator just
one?
[ kellyd ] I used up all of my THINGS almost all of my PLACES and
US and have a big stack of PEOPLE. I guess I know what I need to
work on.
[ pollyanna ] I just love - "Living" and scrapping
with more intention and gratitude - the LOM way. It ROCKS
[ bcre8uv ] diltsy - "We went to the zoo" = what;
"We went to the zoo because Junior has been wanting to
see a real, live elephant" = what + why.
[ sleepyhead ] should we participate in all the chats - are any
duplicates?
[ Amandamartig ] Love that bcre8uv
[ roxannemb ] pennyscraps - I have 4 boys and realised that I am
scrapping for my own purposes right now, my memory lane...where
my LO's end up in 20 years hasn't been figured out yet - I want
to keep them!
[ bcre8uv ] (and also who)
[ stacy julian ] italgal -- we are definitely going to think in
this class. So glad you are here.
[ diltsy ] thank you.
[ italgal ] kellyd - great insight. I guess it will be easy to determine
which is the least common LO, based on how many sticky tabs are
left!
[ Kaly ] Awhile ago I stopped scrapping chronologically. I felt
more creative, and more apt to do a LO of something everyday, like
my son's toes peeking out of his pj's.
[ Barb in AK ] "I'm pennyscrap's twin!!! I am such a perfectionist,
too!<br />
And I can't seem to make decisions! Therefore, choosing paper, embellies,
and such drag me down. Then--it has to be placed just right to make
sense in my mind. I just can't seem to get anything accomplished!!
It is a CHORE!!!"
[ sleepyhead ] kaly - me too - i started scrapping digi so I could
break out of the chronological rut
[ stacy julian ] The chats tend to take on a life of their own.
I will generally open them up for questions and comments on the
current lesson and then take other questions too. They are not required
-- but often quite FUN! Transcripts are posted in about 2 to 3 days.
[ pennyscraps ] My oldest is a freshman - so I at least have the
goal to get him a school of life in the next 3 years ;-) and i am
blessed that i get to start from scratch with it
[ midwestgirl ] How many of us have read Photo Freedom? Is that
why we're all antsy and want to jump ahead? How many already use
LOM is some form?
[ Ann in FL ] The photos I most need/want to sort are loose. What
should I do with those?
[ KathiL ] Barb and Pennyscraps - we must be triplets. Perfections
has us paralized.
[ KelliM ] I stopped scrapping chronologically as wel, but still
have the "need" to go back and put the albums
in chronological order as I complete things....
[ pennyscraps ] hello twin barb
[ Annette33 ] I cannot scrap and journal at the same time
[ Amandamartig ] How many people are in the class, Stacy? Sorry
if I missed the answer...just curious.
[ busybean ] kaly - agreed! I found more creativity when I wasn't
so worried about chronology. I work on what I want to when I want
to, which is way more fun!
[ bethgholmes ] I struggle with perfectionism too -- already worried
about whether I'll put the right tab on a layout!
[ SharonMeaney ] I definitely agree that moving away from chronological,
event-based scrapbooking changes the way I take photos and what
I take photos of. I took one the other day of my VERY messy kitchen
counter covered in sippy cups waiting to go in the dishwasher (I
have three small girls) b/c I figured "well, that's what
life's like right now" :-)
[ krizbeekrafty ] many of my pages are not complete. No titles or
journaling
[ Terri in BC ] I'm still working on the pre-work. I'm struggling
picking out highlights. What do you use to define highlights?
[ shamrock ] I'm the same busybean. Chronological just didn't work
for me. I'd get stuck.
[ SugarJen ] I've read Photo Freedom, and have my printed photos
organized, but need to put it to practice
[ kellyd ] midwestgirl-I have read Photo Freedom and have already
started utilizing the principles. I am so antsy because of this.
[ MelH ] I think I am the procurement queen of scrapbook supplies
thinking one day I would get to my closet of photos...I just haven't
found "go". I think LOM is the "go"
square on the gameboard!!
[ krizbeekrafty ] cause that is the hard part
[ artiste ] i've read photo freedom... great book!
[ scrapchris ] I love School of Life! I altered it to work for the
little ones as well - titled it - School of Life - The Early Years
and it covers birth through preschool
[ pennyscraps ] i have 12 costco binders, 2 category drawers and
some photos in both areas - and lots more to tackle...but i only
did that in sept and have not scrapped out of LOM yet - just setting
it up
[ diltsy ] I'm title challenged too. I have whole books missing
titles.
[ jamie in pa ] i've noticed that in the theme albums I've done,
they were so much more meaningful than the usual (boring) chrono
ones
[ SuzanneB ] The idea of not scrapping chronologically had me terrified
at first, but I'm open to trying this new way....it's going to be
a big change!
[ Kaly ] I'm so glad that I already have some sense of order to
my photos. I would feel SO behind if I didn't!
[ JessicaM ] I noticed that, too, Kriz... no journaling or titles,
almost all Us pages.
[ my2boys ] I have a hard time with titles. How important are they?
[ krizbeekrafty ] I have tried to go back and finish them, but I
just want to do more LOs.
[ mommystamps ] scrapchris I love that idea "the early
years"
[ roxannemb ] I am definitely needing to work on my time management
skills. I usually go back to a LO for days or more before declaring
it done. I love the process but need to speed it up buttercup
[ liljune25 ] Terri in BC: I pick photos that I can write some sort
of story to.
[ krizbeekrafty ] glad i m not the only one
[ pennyscraps ] read BPS twice and PF three times - love them
[ shamrock ] Love Photo Freedom too. Need to reread it, been ages.
[ erikah ] scrapchris - I love that idea re: school of life!
[ catstout ] I try to do chronological order, but find I get stuck,
maybe I need to change and see how it works.
[ artiste ] with all the links people have posted for storage binders
i'm confused on where to buy them
[ Amandamartig ] krizbeekrafty - I don't always use titles! They
don't always work for me, and they were holding be back from saying
my page was done and one day I just realized, wait, I don't "HAVE
TO" put a title on the page. That was freedom for me.
[ AmySJ ] Titles- Hard time here too. . . I just give it a title.
. . this ain't about being witty.
[ Maureen ] Do Highlights = prints or do you define highlights and
print a subset of those?
[ Franci ] i loved both books too!!
[ steph s. ] Stacy, how does your family enjoy the scrapbooks together.
I am a little concerned about all about us pages eventually ending
up in albums about only one person. Maybe because I am new to scrapping
and don't have a alot of pages yet. I agree with losing chronology
but can't figure out how we would get a sense of each other's personality's
if they were divided up by person. Sorry not sure how clear my question
is.
[ stacy julian ] Barb in AK -- we all have perfectionistic tendancies
(all spelled wrong) the more you practice intentional imperfection,
the happy you will be. At least I've come to embrace this idea.
If I purposely scrapbook things a little crooked and purposely make
my handwritting a little wonky -- and purposely strive for a fluid
and (homemade) scrapbook page, then it turns out just right -- yes?
[ sleepyhead ] read PF and BPS, love 'em both - trying to figure
out how Photos I Love & School of Life fit in
[ allyanne ] I've noticed that the layouts I've never finished are
the ones I'm not doing for any good reason. They are just "whatever"
pages, and I don't care enough to finish them. Yet I still feel
guilty about leaving them unfinished!
[ KathiL ] MelH - I sometimes get like that, purchase and collect
but not much doing. Start by doing the layout every time Stacy tells
us to. Force yourself to actually do. It gets easier.
[ shamrock ] I'm trying to figure that out too Sleepyhead
[ stacy julian ] If I try to scrapbook and make it all line up and
try and select the perfect papers, products and FONTS (don't even
get me started on fonts) then it feels very un-FUN and very forced.
We all have different styles and preferences, but within those styles
and preferences there is wiggle room. Let's wiggle!
[ ALtLCountryHeart ] Stacy, I already sorted my digital layouts
about a month ago before I knew I was going to take this class.
My system was a little bit backward from yours though. I have them
as theme first and then by year. For Example: I have a folder called
Summertime and then inside it I have a folder for each year with
nothing but summer time pictures that I felt were good enough to
keep to print or scrap. Is this okay too as I will know where to
find them as I need to?
[ KelliM ] i find the best titles come at about 11:30 after a few
cokes and a bat of the giggles with friends...just don't use permanent
adhesive until you get a chance to reread in the morning.
[ roxannemb ] I usually come up with a title and journaling ideas
as I'm taking the pics - but forget it when I finally go to scrap
those pictures...
[ Annette33 ] the challenge will be to scrap a page for this class
[ MelH ] Thanks KathiL...I am sticking to the agenda and setting
time each day for this
[ pennyscraps ] One very cool thing for me is I am halfway through
CZ's DYL class and love the foundational principles and my learning
to use templates. So - I am hoping this LOM is the topper to those
basic design lessons
[ ALtLCountryHeart ] sorry not digital layouts but digital pictures
I mean...
[ liljune25 ] A question for the coaches. I'm mostly digital. What
do I do with photos that I've already scrapped? Do I not place them
in the highlights folders at all? What do you do?
[ ladotter ] "I sometimes think I<br />
more a collector of supplies than a scrapbooker, but thats all going
to change now"
[ sleepyhead ] after organizing all my pics I was inspired to create
a decade in review layout - posted in the student gallery - thanks
Stacy for the inspiration!
[ Barb in AK ] I have SIMPLE SCRAPBOOKS "Scrapbooking Made
Easy". Stacy's first chapter gives a glimmer of what this
class is all about :-) I think I'll be referring to it quite a bit,
too. :-)
[ diltsy ] I've never done a class here where the assignments weren't
from sketches. Excited/nervous/curious to see how that works.
[ Lynse ] I feel I have to scrapbook every picture I take as if
my scrapbooks are more like photo albums. Then I would come to a
page I didn't want to do, but felt like I had to do and quit scrapbooking.
[ krizbeekrafty ] @ladotter....that is me, in a nutshell
[ Cherri :) ] Someone once told me that when an Amish builder is
making something he purposefully does something "wrong"
as he knows God is the only one to make perfect things. I totally
embrace that and don't try to be perfect any more... being "unperfect"
on purpose.
[ pennyscraps ] I do let a LO perk a day before I "finish
it" - I think when I get dressed and drive and just like
to mentally go over it and see if there's anything I'd like to add/alter
[ gingerathome ] Same question as liljune25.
[ AmySJ ] DYL & Templates. . They make it so much easier
and so much more about scrpabooking then the layout.
[ ands19 ] I find that the layouts that are left unfinished are
the ones that are most important to me and that I expect those to
be perfect.
[ bossygirl ] ladotter - I feel your "pain"!
[ TracyBzz ] Cherri - you should post that Amish story - that's
great.
[ busybean ] I used to be a perfectionist but found most of my time
went into creating perfection, rather than just creating. So I "settle"
for "good enough" now, and love my pages so much
more!
[ roxannemb ] Cherri - love that!
[ gingerathome ] what about the photos already scrapbooked?
[ Franci ] ladotter... I think the same thing. I am always buying
supplies for an idea I get and then never get around to creating
the LO.
[ erikah ] stacy - highlights folder? did I miss something? I have
been separating my digital pics by season/year? is that right or
is there more?
[ bcre8uv ] If I've already scrapped a photo and I feel done with
it, I do not place it a highlights folder. But if I think there's
a chance I might want to use it again to tell another story, I do
put it in a highlight folder.
[ Cherri :) ] KelliM: I agree... lots of my best scrapbooking has
been done with girlfriends late at night, laughing over a drink
and a snack and sharing the story of our photos....
[ Candace Ann ] I'm ladotter's twin! A collector of everything scrapbooking
related. I have ONE album done. But I have a ROCKIN studio just
waiting for me to CREATE!
[ scrappyknitter ] when you've scrapped a digital picture do you
file it somewhere else?
[ MonicaMcNeill ] liljune25: Are you mostly digital in your layouts?
If there is a picture that you've already scrapped but know that
there is still another story to tell then go ahead & put
it in your highlights folder :) There is no rule that says once
it has been scrapped you can't revisit it with either time or perspective.
[ Kaly ] ands19- they'll never get done if you worry over them!
It's a process and an acceptance, really.
[ stacy julian ] I keep trying to finish a question and I keep losing
it. The refresh is driving me crazy!
[ Becky C ] Stacy, where would I ever find your first book Simple
Scrapbooks?
[ bossygirl ] Candace Ann - I'm glad there's someone out there just
like me!!! I feel like such a "fake" sometimes!!!
[ bethgholmes ] I tag digital photos I have scrapped with the tag
"Scrapped" just for my own reference
[ busybean ] Hilights folders...move pictures or put copies of them
in there?
[ SharonMeaney ] I run out a Shutterfly photo book every 6 months
that is chronological. Captures what I consider to the be the "best"
photos of those 6 months. It appeals to the part of me that wants
to "do" something with the photos. Great -- they're
"done" and then I can focus my scrapbooking on
other types of themes and layouts. Anyone else combine photo books
and scrapbooks?
[ MelH ] Candace Ann...right there with you
[ bcre8uv ] I agree Stacy - hard to follow when it refreshes at
the top.
[ KathiL ] MelH - I have taken a few classes here which helps. I
still have a few unfinished projects from those classes. I am also
setting aside time each week to complete some of these. Once you
like what you see it is inspiring.
[ ladotter ] DH calls my craft room his other Harley! LOL
[ artiste ] sleepyhead, i love your decade in review... i may scraplift
your idea
[ gingerathome ] This chatting is very confusing. Looking forward
to the transcript so I can finish reading!
[ MonicaMcNeill ] Lynse: I know that!! That is very much where I
was when I started LOM :) You are going to LOVE this!!!
[ pennyscraps ] Ya'll just reminded me I have that SS book! I also
took AE's Yesterday and Today and learned from her the simplicity
of photos + stories - it has been a great few months reviewing the
basics of storytelling and design....
[ Kaly ] I agree. Hard to follow top-wise.
[ my2boys ] Good idea SharonMeaney!
[ scrappyknitter ] This is really hard to read
[ sleepyhead ] artiste - be my guest :-)
[ erikah ] gingerathome - me too!
[ Lynse ] Ladotter-I know what you mean. I think I could open a
scrapbooking store with all the stuff I have collected:) Now it
just needs to make it in a scrapbook!
[ AmySJ ] Stacy- would it be easier if we submitted questions ahead
of time so that you could answer them etc in the chats
[ diltsy ] ladotter: LMAO. We're Harley people too.
[ bethgholmes ] Pennyscraps -- I took Ali's Y & T class
as well and it definitely changed the way I think about scrapping,
now to get my photos in order so i can do more of it
[ bossygirl ] We refer to my scrapbook room as my "garage".
Now my husband and I both have a garage full of stuff! :)
[ erikah ] my eyes hurt! see you all on the transcript!
[ Kristi SB ] If I was reading a question, and it is no longer viewable...
can I scroll back to finish it? I walked away to check on a kid,
and now I cannot figure out how to get back down to see the stuff
I was reading.... help?
[ stacy julian ] erikah -- continue separating your digital images
by season and year, but pare them down too, so that you have ONLY
your best images. The ones you really want to spend time with and
put on a scrapbook page -- give those images 3,4, or 5 stars --
or copy them into a highlights folder. None of us have time to deal
with (scrap) ALL or even most of our photos. Highlights folders
will help you create a more realistic selection of photos to print
from and use -- yes? You might need to review the information in
the pre-classroom!
[ scrappyknitter ] I find this small screen just way too small
[ daisy10727 ] My scrapbook space is the kitchen table after everyone
else goes to bed...
[ liljune25 ] Thanks. That's what I have been doing so far. I just
worry that I have so much photos already. :)
[ Maureen ] Are most of your layouts inspired by a story you want
to tell, or do you just as often scrap great photos?
[ Skier ] agree with amysj - would it be easier to submit questions
ahead of time
[ fay ] i can't keep up with all the comments as the page moves
so fast so i will be glad when the transcript also comes out. fay
[ nancyr5213 ] I love taking photos of birds so I often scrap my
bird photos as watching them makes me happy!
[ stacy julian ] AmySJ --Yes, we can totally do half of each chat
as a closed chat, where you send me questions ahead of time and
I respond to those questions. We can the open up the chat for the
last 30 minutes. If you want to do this -- I'll let Kayce know and
we'll just collect your questions beginning a day or two before
each chat!
[ SharynC ] If the screen were larger, maybe it would be easier
to follow because items wouldn't move out of view so quickly?
[ Amandamartig ] Ok, it's 10:30 in NY and I have an 8 AM dentist
appointment tomorrow...goodnight ladies! Thanks Stacy!
[ TracyBzz ] if your question gets missed you can always post to
Stacy or the coaches
[ pennyscraps ] Oh - where do we put FOOD PHOTOS in the highlights
area??
[ Terri in BC ] what guidelines do you use for 3, 4, 5 star rating?
I use 4 for want to scrapbook and 5 for very best, everything else
would default to a 3.
[ sleepyhead ] since I'm digi...I found that instead of making a
"highlights" pile of my old printed photos, I'm
making a pile of photos I'm willing to take time scanning...it's
definitely helped me only select the really good ones!
[ fay ] i have all of my pictures in different boxes by year and
then sorted by season. is this what we were supposed to be doing.
fay
[ nonnysbooks ] I was doing well with going through digi photos
(got 3 years done in fairly short order) then I hit a huge picture
year and got overwhelmed again (2600 pics in one year).
[ Franci ] i like the idea of a closed chat.
[ ands19 ] I like the closed chat idea too.
[ artiste ] yes, a closed chat is MUCH better
[ kellyd ] A closed chat would be great!
[ MonicaMcNeill ] Maureen I do both :) I love them equally !!
[ gingerathome ] AGREE!!!!!
[ Skier ] i vote for a closed chat
[ AmySJ ] I think it would make it easier and more focused
[ bethgholmes ] What is a closed chat?
[ SharynC ] I agree, closed chat sounds good
[ SuzanneB ] YES!
[ TracyBzz ] what's the difference between closed chat and message
board?
[ Kaly ] closed chat would be much easier to follow. But the interactions
are quite nice too.
[ AprilFL ] penny: if you feel your food photo is a highlight, then
just move it to that season. We're not at the point of tagging for
categories yet.
[ stacy julian ] "Maureen,<br />
I would say that most of my layouts are inspired by a story (meaning
-- some idea or conversation or thought or something that I want
to explore) this is a shift for me. I am scrapbook less now that
I'm not involved with the magazine. I am doing more online sharing
and I'm printing less (we'll talk more about this in coming weeks)
I have LOTS of pages done, so I'm taking things a little slower
these days!"
[ Terri in BC ] I vote for 1/2 closed, last 1/2 open
[ TheChickPea ] That's a good idea sleepyhead! (re: taking out photos
you are willing to scan!)
[ mommystamps ] I like the idea of a closed chat too...it would
be easier to follow...
[ Maureen ] I agree with Tracy..closed chat=messageboard
[ fay ] i live that idea about questions ahead of time. fay
[ sleepyhead ] I vote for 1/2 and 1/2 too - hard to follow with
the small window, but I like the "chatting"
[ pennyscraps ] When will we get there April? I don't want to do
my sorting "wrong"
[ MelH ] I like this forum...easy enough to scroll at your own pace
[ ladotter ] Stacy how do you deal with hertiage photos when you
are sorting (IL family no blood relatives)?
[ stacy julian ] sleepyhead -- YES, a scanning pile -- that's a
great idea. We should all think about our backlog of photos in this
way. Do I really want to spend time scrapbooking this photo, or
can it just sit here and be happy. You don't have to delete images
if that bothers you, just PARE your collection down to the ones
you most want to scrapbook.
[ midwestgirl ] Questions ahead of time? Isn't that what the message
board is for? But 1/2 and 1/2 sounds like a good compromise.
[ artiste ] how do i decide where to buy my albums and how many
i will need? strictly price? I know i want the pioneer 3-up 3-ring
binders.
[ fay ] since i came in late what are you talking about highlighting?
Fay
[ busybean ] Lots of great ideas here that we'd miss if it were
closed...I'm looking forward to reading the transcripts! I'm for
1/2 and 1/2, and a bigger window!
[ Leora ] I think folks will get used to the pace here. It is ok
if you don't catch it all!
[ bossygirl ] I agree with Maureen and Tracy - closed chat is just
a message board. An open chat allows us to interact with one another.
[ pennyscraps ] I agree that closed chat = MB. Maybe slower refresh
bursts and a bigger screen and a half and half....
[ NonaZ ] I too think that a closed chat = message board. This is
fun. I scroll down to read what I might miss and read the smaller
posts easily
[ AprilFL ] stacy will have a lesson on categories with some worksheets.
Until then, we're just focusing on season (or quarter) highlight
folders.
[ Barb in AK ] I may never have to do another theme album, if I
follow the Library of Memories method...doncha think? :-)
[ gingerathome ] Dealing with heritage photos? Where do they fit
in?
[ Terri in BC ] I'm also doing heritage and need to share them with
the rest of the family. I don't want to get rid of any of them,
but how do I manage the sort at this point?
[ pennyscraps ] I had thought about adding an album DAYS WE CELEBRATE
- to capture all the holidays....anyone every done that?
[ Ann in FL ] What should I do with all my loose photos?
[ Leora ] I'd love to learn a system for incorporating scanned heritage
photos into our libraries.
[ MonicaMcNeill ] gingerathome: I have a storage binder just for
heritage photos
[ stacy julian ] As a rule of thumb. I give myself permission to
take a truckload of pictures at an event (like a birthday) and then
I make myself move less than half to my highlights folder. I often
look for a nice balance of close ups, group shots, images that capture
the various stages of the party (cake, gifts, etc.) and then make
sure I have one of each guest. I will say that paring down gets
MUCH easier with time. Try really hard to get in the habit of doing
a quick pare down every time you upload photos!
[ midwestgirl ] Pennyscraps, I created a separate album called Celebrations.
it includes birthdays, weddings & anniversaries, and family
gatherings.
[ tshay ] pennyscraps - i have albums called Seasons & Holidays
[ mb2009 ] when will we need thebinders?
[ AmySJ ] I feel like I'm missing lots of great ideas because it's
moving too fast. I like the idea of half and half.
[ artiste ] i have a huge box of heritage photos that only one family
member (living across country) could possibly identify. i thought
of scanning them and sending them. or should i just send the whole
box to him?
[ stacy julian ] Barb in AK -- the LOM system includes theme albums.
You'll see! It's really so cool.Scary that I'm mine own biggest
fan!!
[ busybean ] I NEED to pare them as I upload them...I got rid of
4500 pics from 2009 last week!
[ sleepyhead ] go busybean!
[ Candace Ann ] oooooo....CElebrations. I like that.
[ pennyscraps ] Will we get some scanning tips?? I still have some
photos I found for AE's class that I need to scan in - but how to
organize them....ugh...
[ MelH ] rock on busybean
[ Maureen ] I think that i am your biggest fan ;)
[ pennyscraps ] How do we buy the duplicator annihilator?
[ sleepyhead ] I think you have quite a few fans to compete with
Stacey :-)
[ roxannemb ] busybean - holy smokes I wish I could do that!
[ Cherri :) ] artiste: Scan and send, never send your orginals,
they could get lost or not returned.
[ ALtLCountryHeart ] Ann, I dont know if this is a bad thing to
do but recently I was having a hard time deciding if I wanted to
have some scrapbooks and some picture ablums. For some reason it
bothered me to have both. I decided to have pages within my scrapbooks
of multiple pictures on a page just by using photo corners alone.
This way they are not really scrapbooked but they will be apart
of the same books. Does this make since?
[ stacy julian ] Ann in FL -- what do you mean by loose photos?
Sort them into years and then seasons and slip them into storage
binders! Is that what you mean?
[ bossygirl ] MidWEst Girl - I like the idea of a celebrations album.
TFS.
[ midwestgirl ] LOM, Finish Link Scrapbooks, Photo Album Scrapbooks
- love them all, love the variety!
[ sleepyhead ] oops, I meant Stacy, I'm Stacey LOL
[ busybean ] I want to use a scanning service to scan all the picture
my mom has in boxes.
[ TracyBzz ] busybean - 4500 deleted that great! way to pare down!
[ gingerathome ] Another idea on paring down into hightlights when
"I" love all the pictures and have a hard time
deciding is to let my DH look at them and help me decide. An outsiders
eye if you will.
[ midwestgirl ] Finish Line, sorry
[ pennyscraps ] Oh - I want to buy a finish line kit too - when
is that rolling out??
[ jamie in pa ] should we be moving our sorted photos into binders
now?
[ NicolleT ] This chat is driving me crazy. I will have to read
the transcripts later. See you all in the forums:)
[ Leigh-Ann ] what is finish line?
[ busybean ] Not really...I still kept about 15000!
[ sleepyhead ] 15k for the year busybean?
[ Ann in FL ] The photos I need/want to sort are out of envelopes
all mixed together. I can give a guess to some of the years since
we've lived different places. I have the negatives for them, just
not with the pictures.
[ TracyBzz ] busybean - LOL! Well better than none deleted I guess
:)
[ natlhol ] Busybean..you make me feel better. I have over 13000
photos on my computer for 3 years. I thought that I had taken too
many, but you beat me! LOL!
[ txpns54 ] I thought I took alot of pics at 6721 for 2009. busybean
has me beat!
[ roxannemb ] I think if I let hubby decide I wouldn't have anything
to scrapbook!
[ bossygirl ] duplicator annihilator??
[ artiste ] busybean, i didn't know about scanning services. where
do i find one?
[ steph s. ] I delete a lot of pics right off my camera before download.
If I took 50 pics of my son to get the right action or light I know
I need to delete at least half of them before upload.
[ sleepyhead ] if it makes anyone feel better I have 28,000 from
2003 to current...
[ angie w ] I recommend ScanCafe for scanning services. I sent some
slides to them and they did a great job.
[ busybean ] Yup. Wannabe photographer over here! And little kids...never
can have enough mashed pea faces! But once I started, it was easy
to pare it down. I was ruthless!
[ pennyscraps ] yes duplicator annihilator - it was on digi video
- how to get rid of dupes on your hard drive
[ bossygirl ] you guys are brave to even count your photos!
[ Annette33 ] I have never taken time out to count how many photos
I have from a certain year, lol
[ gingerathome ] sounds like we all LOVE taking the photos!
[ Terri in BC ] @Ann in FL - What I did was sort all my pictures
by year first, estimating the time frame by appearance, haircuts,
clothing etc. Then I could sort them in to seasons easier.
[ stacy julian ] "There was a question I lost that voiced concern
over breaking layouts up into individual albums and possibly losing
a sense of cohesion. <br />
<br />
My short answer to that is don't worry yet. <br />
<br />
My longer answer is I would rather have a more varied, compelling
collection of categorized albums (with no guilt) than a very cohesive
collection of annual albums that lacks depth and personal connection.
We are trading in some cohesion for richness. I think I said that
right?<br />
I'd like you to trust me on this count. There are things you can
do to bring a stronger sense of cohesion to your library albums
-- we'll address those in coming weeks!"
[ nancyr5213 ] Night ladies late here on the East Coast! I will
get the rest in the transcript
[ Kaly ] *gasp* 28,000! I would DIE!
[ bossygirl ] oh, thanks. Haven't gotten to the videos yet.
[ pennyscraps ] Second Scan Cafe - they did marv with our wedding
proofs and now I have a nearly complete wedding album
[ KathiL ] I used to take more pictures until I visualized my kids
deleting most of them after I die. I still take a lot but pare them
way, way down.
[ Lynse ] I was just wondering about Scan Cafe.. Thanks!
[ sleepyhead ] Kaly - that's just digi - I have a few thousand more
printed - but I'm working on it one pile at a time... it just might
take a while to find my dining room table again {sigh}
[ diltsy ] I was thinking that no one was going to read my life
story, year by year for say the next 40 years. That's why I want
to get away from chronological.
[ busybean ] I'll dig up the info and post it. A couple of services
where you mail them a box (insure it!) and they mail them all back
a few days later, along with a CD.
[ ALtLCountryHeart ] Yes it is almost 11:00 here, going to do more
"work" and get some rest. :o) Good night all..
[ scrappyknitter ] Stacy, what would you do with photos of unknown
relatives?
[ fay ] most of my pictures are of my grandchildren and it is so
hard to delete any of them. fay
[ pollyanna ] 40,000 here - gshhh 2000 to current - lol no winners
in this lol
[ Lynse ] Goodnight! Have to go to work early in the morning!
[ Bec ] I have just the opposite problem. I feel like I didn't take
enough pictures.
[ stacy julian ] It's interesting we talk about how many photos
we have. How many stories have we told? What will the value of these
photos be in two generations without any stories?
[ pennyscraps ] Definitely to me the chronological feels like someone's
boring Grand Canyon slide show with a mix of Groundhog Day - you
know same stuff over and over...
[ txpns54 ] Good night to all the East Coasters. Sweet dreams.
[ Kaly ] I used to try to scrap ALL my pictures until I realized
the mountain of albums that would pile up. I now scrap more selectively.
[ mommystamps ] scrappyknitter I'm with you. Lots of people we know
were related but no one knows who they are...
[ italgal ] I can relate, Fay. Every one of the pics of the gk's
is too precious to delete!
[ pollyanna ] not much value without words - that's why I love LOM
[ Annette33 ] I thought journaling was my strong point, but now
I realize that it is more facts than anything
[ midwestgirl ] Unknown relatives - if no one can name them, circular
file, aka, trash.
[ jamie in pa ] ditto with that, pennyscraps!
[ artiste ] where/when will we be able to read this transcript?
[ sleepyhead ] for printed photos I would like to know how we should
handle saving photos for future scrapbookers - my DD is 7 and has
just started scrappin'...?
[ gingerathome ] Stacy, that is why I am looking forward to this
class. I want to tell the stories!
[ nonnysbooks ] The thing I've been most frustrated with is that
we generally have only pulled our camera out when "something
is going on" or we are going somewhere. Lots of scenery
pictures, with an occasional person in them.
[ txpns54 ] I have not told many stories, and that's why I signed
up for this class.
[ NonaZ ] I've taken train rides from Ohio to CA many times and
I realize I have taken the same pictures over and over!
[ pennyscraps ] www.scancafe.com
[ fay ] I have made my parents 2 heritage albums and I sat down
and talked with them about their life and took notes. my dad is
almost 95 and my mom is almost 90. I love their stories. fay
[ Caroline E ] I am really looking forward to telling the stories.
I have photo albums of relatives from 100+ years ago, but I wish
they had written down something about their lives and dreams.
[ TracyBzz ] artiste = the transcript will be ready within the week,
it will says (Transcript) beside today's date.
[ jamie in pa ] same here. i'm reporting facts, but not telling
stories.
[ MonicaMcNeill ] artiste: the transcript will be available in 2-3
days
[ stacy julian ] "Photos of unknown relatives -- if you have
a LOT, I would put them in one storage binder together and take
that binder with me to the next family gathering and start asking
questions. There is a website (can't think of the URL right now)
where you can upload photos and invite family members to make audio
and written comments about what they know. I will try and find the
link.<br />
Get people talking and sharing and see what you can learn!"
[ busybean ] I'll NEVER scrap the tens of thousands of pictures
I have. I'm satisfied to scrap some of them. The rest are for my
own amusement and enjoyment!
[ Cherri :) ] Unknown relatives: I take a basket of photos to family
parties with sticky notes and ask people to identify who they can.
Often times it ends me up with pages of requests "Can I
have a copy of that...."
[ Kaly ] I'm with sleepyhead- I have a LOT of duplicates that I
haven't scrapped, saving them for future generations. What to do
with them?
[ ckytang ] Stacy, I'll have to remember that--not, how many layouts
or how many photos, but how many stories have I told. I haven't
done the flagging exercise yet, but I think it's close to zero!
[ Leora ] Taking classes here at BPS has definitely changed the
way I take pictures!
[ sleepyhead ] fay that's awesome, that's something I want to do
too
[ ShellBelle76 ] i'm definitely in the minority here - as a beginning
scrapbooker, i'm starting from scratch, shaping my scrapbooking
at its very inception...
[ diltsy ] I've been trying to talk my mom into writing stories
on index cards to store in 3 up albums with photos.
[ Rebeccamomof4 ] One time someone was coming to visit that my kids
didn't remember. I just pulled out my People We Love album and found
pages from the last time we saw them. So easy. Better than trying
to remember hmmm, what year did we see so-and-so last? Just one
reason I love LOM and non-chronological albums
[ pennyscraps ] You know, as a writer/storyteller/ you have to find
YOUR VOICE. I think that is why so many people blog. It authenticates
their voice.
[ ShellBelle76 ] so some of the questions, topics of discussion
- they're beyond where i am - but at the same time, it's a gift
to learn from the experiences of so many others.
[ jamie in pa ] shellbelle--you may actually be at an advantage--no
bad habits to unlearn!
[ sleepyhead ] shellbelle - consider yourself lucky!
[ roxannemb ] NOna z - I have the same ones of my kids over and
over just at different ages. How do I scrap these without being
completely redundant???
[ TheChickPea ] ShellBelle76 - so the world is our oyster when it
comes to doing our "least common page"! ;-)
[ bcre8uv ] sleepyhead - I have a 5 year old + a 9 year old niece
who scrap with me, & they get the leftovers. Beyond that,
they will take PLENTY of their own someday, so I don't feel the
need to save photos just for them.
[ pberkson ] I have so many pics from a generation ago and wish
I knew more about the people, places and things and what they meant
to my parents. This will not be my legacy. Now that I've said that
out loud I guess I'm committed.
[ Barb in AK ] I feel like I've told stories on almost all of my
layouts---I love talking and I love journalling. But after the sticker
exercise today, I don't do the "WHY" part of the
5 Ws.
[ Annette33 ] I have a difficult task of scrapbooking my mom's photos.
We sat in the hospital taking notes on the backs of them before
she passed away
[ stacy julian ] Photos or duplicates that you are not going to
scrapbook -- will go into cold storage, in a dark, dust-free, cool,
not humid place in your home. We'll get there!
[ sleepyhead ] thanks bcre8uv
[ pennyscraps ] I want your LOM closet Stacy! ;-)
[ stacy julian ] pberkson -- we'll hold you to this!
[ fay ] as a scrapbooker I feel sometimes I may be the keeper of
their memories of a life I can't imagine for when my parents are
gone. fay
[ daisy10727 ] I've got a ton of stories about my family that I
heard while growing up, but I don't have many pictures to go along
with the stories, what's the best way to get those scrapped?
[ bcre8uv ] :)
[ txpns54 ] I also forget to take pictures of the everyday stuff,
just the events
[ TheChickPea ] Stacy, good luck finding a dust-free zone in my
home. LOL. ;-)
[ pberkson ] Now I've done it!
[ pollyanna ] lol on the dust Chick
[ Terri in BC ] I'm looking forward to more about cold storage.
I still can't figure out why I would have one - I want to see every
picture I own scrapbooked one day!
[ stacy julian ] pennyscraps -- agree with the blogging. it is a
wonderful way to find your voice, practice your writing skills and
document life.
[ Barb in AK ] I have always felt I've been selective with my photos---never
had the "scrap it all" attitude. But I have a
feeling I'm going to scrapping even less photos--but will have more
MEANING to my scrapbooks. :-)
[ shamrock ] Stacy & others, do you find that your "cold
storage" has shrunk as you do more digitial organizing
before printing?
[ ladotter ] I have a album (sticky pages) of photos my MIL has
asked me to do something with since I am the crafty/scrapbooker
of the family, it has been sitting staring at me for a year now
[ busybean ] txpns54 - have you considered the 365 projects? A great
way to capture the everyday!
[ sleepyhead ] wow Terri that's a lot of pressure!
[ stacy julian ] shamrock -- YES. cold storage is shrinking, as
I learn to be more intentional about printing.
[ pollyanna ] Good perspective Barb!
[ pennyscraps ] I told myself when I got my new iMac that I would
blog....will have to see if I do....but I do think it would be good
honing of my craft of writing....
[ bcre8uv ] shamrock - definitely!
[ AprilFL ] Amen, Barb! That's the key!! :)
[ TracyBzz ] Barb in AK - you've got it. Not scrapping all photos
but telling meaningful stories.
[ ShellBelle76 ] thanks for the encouragement, friends
[ Kaly ] shamrock: yes, the pile has shrunk because I am better
prepared before I get my photos developed.
[ scrappyknitter ] thanks for all the advice on unknown relative
pictures. Now I hate to leave but it's late here.
[ Annette33 ] way to think barb!
[ Terri in BC ] @sleepyhead - I know, but I have 4 generations of
photos sitting in boxes and they don't mean anything without the
stories.
[ natlhol ] The 365 project scares me...the thought of taking photos
each day. What if I missed one day or two??? So, I just did one
month. I chose August 2009 and am making a This is my life book.
Lots of transitions for me that month.
[ shamrock ] Good to hear!
[ KathiL ] Thanks everyone, Goodnight
[ ands19 ] I've tried the blogging, for personal and family. But
it seems like that just adds to the chaos.
[ Maureen ] My cold storage is a little bit more because I am more
selective about what I scrap.
[ Rebeccamomof4 ] Terri in BC, seriously? Every picture? Holy moly.
For those of us with 1000s of photos, it's simply not realistic--expensive
and time-consuming. Better to have 3 albums with stories that matter
than 30 of pictures with no meaningful journaling!!!
[ daisy10727 ] with the 365 project, when I missed a day I put a
favorite quote in for that day
[ pennyscraps ] One gal has a blog where she just lists 5 things
every day - pretty cool.
[ sleepyhead ] @Terri - yep, you are right, then they are just 'strangers
in the box' - get the stories and having ALL of them scrapped won't
matter :-)
[ natlhol ] Lain Ehman..five things
[ diltsy ] Husband said today, "why would you put all of
the motorcycle rally pictures together, they all look the same?"
As I understand it, that's the point. I won't NEED to scrap the
rally every year if I don't have anything new or special to say
about it/
[ nessa b. ] there was a sticker exercise for today?! oh no. now
I'm not only late to the chat, I'm already behind!
[ bethgholmes ] ands19, I use my blog as a sort of journal and just
post when I feel like it -- I've also used journaling and photos
from my blog on layouts. Got the idea for AE
[ Kaly ] daisy- nice insight. I am also daunted by the 365.
[ Franci ] daisy 10727 that's a great idea. I am working on a project
365 this year and have missed some days.
[ ands19 ] I put everyday things for days I missed for 365. Like
the dishwasher open, laundry, my favorite breakfast. Something that
could happen any day.
[ steph s. ] I don't print any photos. Only ones to scrap or give
away. I am doing a Project 365 to take the place of regular albums.
[ stacy julian ] Terri in BC -- I sometimes forget that there are
people that have a manageable amount of photos. Please don't let
all my talk of deleting and paring down and cold storage scare you.
I am here to help everyone create a more compelling and authentic
scrapbook library -- most of us need help moving past the 'too many
pictures' place, but that is not the case for everyone! Everyone
is welcome here!
[ gingerathome ] I find it hard to go back and remember the stories
for photos taken just a few years back. Swore I'd remember but just
can't. I'm determined to fix this moving forward.
[ TracyBzz ] diltsy - yes when they are all together they look the
same. You could scrap his love of rallies or how he started or....
to mix it up a little
[ KathiL ] nessa b. The sticker excercise is the homework for the
week along with a couple other things. You are not behind!!!
[ Kaly ] Diltsy - LOL!
[ pennyscraps ] 365 overwhelmed me as I felt like it began to take
over my process and i wanted to be the driver - I abandoned it -
but if it works for you then it is very cool
[ sleepyhead ] I did a "100 Days of Summer" book
as my take on Project 365 - my kids love it
[ Sabine H ] daisy 10727... those stories are precious. I'd scrap
them without photos... I've done lots that way.. it's nice to get
them documented and you can dress up the page or keep it simple
depending on the story..
[ stacy julian ] No one is behind yet. Pahleese girls!
[ Annette33 ] it has taken years to get back to what scrapbooking
is really all about, been in a slump the last eight
[ busybean ] Variations of 365...pick one month and do 30 pictures,
or focus on one week in your life. Or even just today...I love that
one!
[ pennyscraps ] i love the word authentic
[ fay ] when i go to visit the grandkids I take a journal and try
to write each day I am there what we did, special things so when
I do journal I have a record of cute things they said and what we
did
[ MonicaMcNeill ] sleepyhead: 100 Days of Summer! LOVE IT :)
[ Leora ] We are all ahead...because we are here!
[ roxannemb ] Stacy - does it make sense to chose to work with only
the last decade or so? My plan is to get my LOM set up from engagement
to present and then go back and add in the previous decades. Will
that be way more work in the long run - ie: Am I better to just
do it all now from a time-management point?
[ Kaly ] good idea, sleepyhead! (100 days)
[ busybean ] Hmm...no 100 days of summer where I live!
[ liljune25 ] Stacy, I am trying not to let the "too many
pictures" concept scare me. I know that as the kids get
older I will be finding lots of connections down the road.
[ bethgholmes ] Pennyscraps: my word of the year for 2009 was AUTHENTICITY
-- love that word too.
[ stacy julian ] pennyscraps -- I don't 'love' the 365 thing either
(at least not right now in my life) I do think it's a GREAT solution
for many, many people. Becky sent me a kit and I got it today --
it looks fantastic!
[ Kristi SB ] I just ordered 8 binder pioneer albums during this
chat. I am not 100% what I need them for yet, but I am bound and
determined to do this right this time. (I am an OLD alumni retaking
to try this again). thanks for the link to the binders.
[ sleepyhead ] where do you live busybean?
[ Annette33 ] when I was traveling in Europe, I sent a postcard
to myself from each city we were in. Will love scrapbooking those
[ fay ] i think if you took a small notebook in your purse at all
times you could jot down where you were, special things that happened
and dates and maybe that would help fay
[ sleepyhead ] like it Annette33
[ KathiL ] Annette33 - I have taken the last 8 years off as well.
My 19 yr olds asked me just today to get her out of 3rd grade.
[ ands19 ] I think the 365 helped me focus on things that I would
otherwise never scrapbook.
[ pberkson ] The only time to think about the word "behind"
is when you are on the treadmill trying to lose it! That's my story!
[ busybean ] Alberta. Lots of snow. Lots and lots of snow. Maybe
100 days of winter. Make that 200.
[ Annette33 ] lol at kathiL
[ sleepyhead ] pberkson - LOL!
[ pennyscraps ] I think if you have toddlers 365 is easier: photos
of teenagers every day makes everyone stressful ;-)
[ Barb in AK ] I have 20-something albums sitting on a shelf which
I wish were more MEANINGFUL now :-S
[ ands19 ] I also look at my 365 when I try to figure out when something
happened last year.
[ diltsy ] I want to save 365 for something special like baby's
1st year
[ TracyBzz ] busybean - where in Alberta - I'm here too in the snow
and not 100 days of summer :(
[ pennyscraps ] pberkson you score again! funny!
[ Annette33 ] started the 365, but it got overwhelming, but I did
take photos of things I wouldn't normally think to take
[ sleepyhead ] bbrrrr busybean
[ stacy julian ] "roxannemb,<br />
YES. I recommend getting as many photos as you can into bins or
files by decade/year and then moving forward with LOM with only
5 years worth of photos. I would rather you learn LOM with 5 years
and be successful then get to lesson 2 and quit because you are
too focused on working with 30 years of photos!"
[ Maribeth ] Stacy, thanks for reinforcing "no one is behind."
I am looking forward to reliving moments in life as I sort pictures.
Knowing we have forever access to the site is reassuring. I am more
about the process and making intentional change than a time line.
[ Rebeccamomof4 ] I did 365 last year and found that by the end
of the year I was much better about taking everyday pics, and with
my limited scrapbooking time I can then focus on creating LOM pages
with stories, since the rest is in the 365 project. Works great
for me.
[ Annette33 ] poor little dd, hardly has any photos scrapped of
her, lol
[ pollyanna ] Barb - did you have fun creating them or were you
stresed? Just curious
[ steph s. ] I definitely couldn't do 365 every year. This year
is a challenge to myself to actually print photos. I think I will
however do 12 layouts/year in the future. Kind of a monthly round
up of some everyday photos I like.
[ busybean ] 365 doesn't have to be people. Pets, gardening, your
community...
[ pennyscraps ] well hey - we are a retail house and so 2/1 is DH's
new year and it's ours too - we ARE going to get this!
[ fay ] i saw pioneer photo albums at jo ann's where you could put
4 by 6 pictures and also panaramic shots also. Would this be as
good as ordering from scrapbook.com
[ natlhol ] Stacy, didn't think of that. Makes me feel a little
better. Five good years is a good way to start...
[ KathiL ] Try a few photos a month, highlighting everyday life
that month. It is much more managible.
[ busybean ] Sherwood Park. Maybe it just seems like 200 days of
snow since DH was sick during the worst of it so I shoveled it all
myself!
[ madre ] did I miss something with the 365??? Is this just chat
about it and not part of lom?
[ ands19 ] I hardly took any pictures last month after having a
camera at my side every day last year.
[ TracyBzz ] fay - only if the albums are 3 ring do NOT get coil
bound albums.
[ bcre8uv ] fay - I think that's the kind I have. As long as they're
3-ring, they're good. 3-ring is essential.
[ pennyscraps ] What I LOVE about the five years is that it is how
long we have lived in Dallas. So if I just focus on Dallas I can
breathe. ;-)
[ TracyBzz ] I'm by Grande Prairie and no it is 200 days of snow
or yuck.
[ midwestgirl ] I'll second the need for three-rings!
[ artiste ] fay... ARE they 3-ring? i was going to check there...
i want them NOW
[ pennyscraps ] just 365 chat - no 365 lom
[ Annette33 ] way to think KathiL, at least then some everyday things
will be photographed. Something that is missing in my albums.
[ stacy julian ] fay -- photos albums that you use as storage binders
MUST have removable pages, meaning 3 ring binding. More info on
this coming next week! As long as you find albums with a 3-ring
binding they will work!
[ Sabine H ] fay... I use that idea too...jot down stories thoughts
and ideas as I ride the bus or am sitting having a coffee... the
stories and thoughts and feelings flow a little easier when the
page isn't staring you in the face... works for me. Sometimes it
is years or months before I get to a page or event and when I read
what I wrote at the time - I'm amazed at what I'd forgotten.
[ busybean ] Madre - yes. 365 is when you take a picture every day.
Gets you thinking about stuff other than birthdays, Christmas, etc.
A little off topic!
[ Kristi SB ] Yeah, thinking ONLY back 5 years does make this all
more palatable.
[ MonicaMcNeill ] pennyscraps I'm also in Dallas :)
[ cgull1 ] steph s. I've seen people doing 12 on 12. take 12 pictures
on the 12th of every month. We try it when we remember, but haven't
scrapped any of it. :-) Still, gets us intentionally taking pictures.
[ pennyscraps ] I am in Plano Monica
[ sleepyhead ] thanks for clarifying that I need to sort each decade
into years, I've only done one decade so far - oops
[ TracyBzz ] It doesn't have to be the last 5 years. It can be any
5 years into albums
[ fay ] this sorting pictures reaped a benefit for me. a friend
of mine of 20 years died and i didn't think i had a picture of her.
not only did i find a picture of her at my house but i found a thank
you note from her. it was so exciting and i can't wait to journal
about her and my's friendship. fay
[ busybean ] I like snow. Just not six feet of it!
[ MonicaMcNeill ] pennyscraps North Dallas :)
[ nonnysbooks ] "Last summer I spent a good bit of time getting
loose photos into yearly chronological photo albums and got about
15 years worth sorted that way, though I didn't purge. <br />
The last week or so I've been focusing on the digi photos and have
3 years sorted/purged"
[ Sabine H ] hey does anyone know a supplier in Vancouver where
you can get the Pioneer albums for a good price. I could order online
but would like to avoid the costly shipping/duty for across the
border...
[ pennyscraps ] Cool. I have a friend off Belt Line.
[ sleepyhead ] that's great fay
[ ands19 ] Stacy, I'm going to a weekend crop in a couple of weeks.
Suggestions on what I do? I'm trying to prepare. Would like it to
fit in to what we are doing here.
[ stacy julian ] fay -- there are so many wonderful things hiding
in our stash of photos. The first several weeks of LOM are really
about becoming better acquainted with our photos again.
[ pennyscraps ] maybe Google them Sabine?
[ bossygirl ] I found my Pioneer binders at ArchivalUSA.com. They
were only $14.45 each. Three ring, three up, leather.
[ fay ] i don't think they are 3 ring but they have 204 spaces for
photo's and panaramic and with a 40 off coupon they appear to be
very reasonable.
[ pberkson ] I love seeing all the Dallas folks as I'm from Richardson
BUT I love living in the Cleveland area because I seriously never
have to shave my legs!
[ roxannemb ] Im in Winnipeg and I'm pretty sure we only had 30
days of summer!!
[ KathiL ] Last year I got my pioneer 3ring binders at Costco.com.
They were 2 to a package. Might want to look there.
[ Terri in BC ] @sabine - you could order online and have it shipped
to a drop box in Blaine. I use one in Sumas, WA and pick up my US
orders there. Usually don't pay duty!
[ stacy julian ] weekend cropper -- are you an alumni or a new LOMer?
[ TracyBzz ] fay - do NOT get them if they are not 3ring, no matter
what.
[ pennyscraps ] ?? = do all the Valentines go in one folder or that
day by year? In other words, do we sort our photos by category drawer
or by storage binder?
[ ands19 ] new LOMer
[ bcre8uv ] fay - If they aren't 3-ring, they aren't worth the bargain
price. You will wind up replacing them later - trust me! It's really
important to be able to move pages around as you empty old binders
& fill new ones.
[ natlhol ] I've been having great luck finding the binders at Goodwill
and the pages at Michael's. It's keeping the costs down for me right
now.
[ fay ] i have done about 10 years sorting. i was getting overwelmed
about all the pictures from my cruises but that was more than 8
years ago so i can stop that. i can concentrate on 5 years and i
think i already have those done. fay
[ pennyscraps ] costco has them no more
[ roxannemb ] Anyone have a CDN source for 3-up ring binders?
[ twynard ] Fay - I have 2 of the coil ones from JoAnns and they
are not cutting it. The books puff out too much when you put multiple
photos in each slot. I just bought 4 of the ring binders today online-
This way they will lay and store better.
[ MonicaMcNeill ] KathiL: It looks like Costco is not carrying them
this year :(
[ nessa b. ] thanks KathiL. I printed that out just haven't had
time to read through it.
[ KathiL ] So Sad for Costco.
[ Kaly ] Okay, it's getting late for me. My eyes are turning buggy!
Ciao bellas!
[ TracyBzz ] Roxannemb - there is NO Canadian source for the binders.
I'm trying to get some online stores to stock them, but no word
yet.
[ scrapbunny ] did I miss everything?
[ Barb in AK ] Pollyanna--Stressed at the beginning of the layout,
happy and having fun while I was in the midst of the creation, but
totally ecstatic when it was completed :-)
[ sleepyhead ] hi scrapbunny
[ bethgholmes ] Time flies -- good night everyone
[ MelH ] If I have CM style strap books is this okay? You can remove
pages and move them around.
[ TracyBzz ] In Canada I just bought 4-up albums from London Drugs,
Wal-mart, whereever.
[ busybean ] CDN - Michael's has 3-ring 12x12 binders, Walmart has
3-up photo albums...
[ bcre8uv ] You can also use 3-ring albums instead of binders. We
R Memory Keepers makes divided pages that have four 4x6 photo spots
on each side. Those might be easier/more economical in Canada.
[ Annette33 ] Barb, let's share out thoughts through email sometime
this week
[ pennyscraps ] is this over?
[ artiste ] are we done? i'm tired but don't want to leave until
we're finished.
[ roxannemb ] dang - maybe I'll go bug my LSS
[ fay ] thanks my sister is a member of costco so i will go with
her and look at the albums. fay
[ nonnysbooks ] Roxanne....do you have Walmart? For my mass storage
I found 3-up ring binders at Walmart. Not fancy, but buying a bunch
made my bookcase where I'm storing them look good
[ Leora ] Can you say a little about how you plan to use the blogs?
[ AprilFL ] I personally use 1" binders I purchased at
Wal Mart for my storage binders.
[ madre ] what software does everyone prefer for sorting? I have
way TOO MANY pics and have photoshop 5...
[ scrapbunny ] hi sleepyhead, guess i missed it
[ Candace Ann ] anybody in so cal?
[ fay ] thanks about the information on jo ann's i will look elsewhere.
fay
[ AprilFL ] All black; purchased also at Wal Mart were plastic sleeves
with three 4x6 slots per side.
[ Annette33 ] April--what is the cost for those binders at walmart,
pretty much all I have to choose from here
[ MonicaMcNeill ] MelH: You can use whatever albums work for you.I
used to have CM Strap Hinge but have moved away from that because
the three ring gives me more freedom.
[ midwestgirl ] Thanks, everyone. This was lots of fun! Thanks,
Stacy!
[ Terri in BC ] I'm using CM's Memory Manager.
[ bcre8uv ] Duh - that's what I meant...binders, not albums.
[ jamie in pa ] great talking to you all. hope to get caught up
with my sticky notes while I'm snowed in this weekend. good night,
all!
[ sleepyhead ] i use pse6
[ Sabine H ] thanks for all the tips on the storage binders ladies
!!
[ nessa b. ] WTG nonnysbooks! I hope to be able to say that one
of these weeks!
[ scrapbunny ] madre _ I use Picasa and AcDSee
[ TracyBzz ] scrapbunny it started an hour ago you can see the local
PST time in the top right of this screen
[ fay ] boo hoo none at costco. fay
[ liljune25 ] Leora: I use my blog to journal the stories while
they are fresh in my mind. If I can I usually attach a photo to
the post. I'm hoping to go back and use the content as journaling
when I've got my act together.
[ roxannemb ] nonnybooks - thanks I'll have to check out Walmart
[ bcre8uv ] I'm in SoCal, CandaceAnn :)
[ sleepyhead ] good idea liljune
[ artiste ] ok, leaving now. bye everyone!
[ Leora ] Thanks. I really meant the blogs in the classroom...
[ Kindteacher ] AprilFL ~ I got the Wal-Mart black ones, also.
[ pennyscraps ] ?? so are we setting up our digi files like 3 up
binders or like category drawers?
[ stacy julian ] New LOMer at a weekend crop. Get one or two or
three storage binders filled and then take them along and make a
bunch of FUN event-based pages. Practice journaling in a way that
you choose what to emphasize. In other words, see if you can create
a layout for an US album, a PEOPLE album, a PLACES album and a THINGS
album -- practice your job as chief memory officer and executive
director. Be a little more intentional about the story you want
to tell -- use your photos more as an illustration of a memory or
story vs. the story itself. Make sense?
[ busybean ] Windows built-in photo viewer...under view, make them
extra large...way bigger than thumbnails and for lots of pictures,
makes it easy to view and delete!
[ Buglet ] Oops, I thought it was starting at 8:00pm PST
[ tshay ] got them at my walmart for $5 each - in SW Missouri
[ scrappyangel ] what..on no, I wonder why Costco stopped carrying
them? Are their links on the MB to new places?
[ stacy julian ] We need to wrap this chat up -- any final questions
for me?
[ nonnysbooks ] Oh I'm not done getting photos into albums, still
have 3 storage crates full of photos to get sorted.
[ pennyscraps ] i had one I typed twice - I can put it on mb
[ Kindteacher ] Going to a crop this next weekend, will do, Stacy!
:)
[ sleepyhead ] how can we set up category drawers for our digi files?
[ MelH ] Stacy, If I have CM style strap books is this okay? You
can remove pages and move them around.
[ bossygirl ] Night Everyone. Thanks Stacy and trainers!
[ Barb in AK ] Okey-dokey Annette!
[ fay ] the 1 inch binders do you just go buy the 4 by 6 holders
at like office max or office depot fay
[ Terri in BC ] Thanks, Stacy! See you Saturday
[ Caroline E ] Thanks - good night!
[ pennyscraps ] THANK YOU STACY. NITE ALL. Alarm goes off at 5....
[ my2boys ] Thank you Stacy. I can't wait to get going on LOM!
[ Kindteacher ] G'night, all!
[ scrappyangel ] If I only have PSE6 (which I have never used) do
I need to upgrade to 8??
[ pennyscraps ] oh yes thank you TRAINERS TOO
[ NicolleT ] Candace- Im in So Cal
[ Leora ] Thanks Stacy and Coaches. Have a nice weekend everyone!
[ Annette33 ] wow, this class will get my behind in gear--I need
it!
[ Terri in BC ] And good night to the other moderators!
[ nessa b. ] is there any chance to review this chat since I got
in late?
[ gingerathome ] Thanks for all the great ideas and tips.
[ scrapbunny ] when will the chat transcrpt be posted?
[ ladotter ] Thanks Stacy, Really excited to be here
[ Bec ] Thanks, everyone! Good night!
[ sleepyhead ] scrappyangel - only if there are features you can't
live without
[ Cherri :) ] Thank you Stacy! Good night everyone.
[ Cindy Denning ] Thank you for your patience and your time Stacy!
[ stacy julian ] MelH -- these are not my favorite style of pages,
simply because if I remember right the front and back of the page
is two different layouts -- is that correct? You can use any album
you want. I know CM albums are very high quality. I think you may
end up somewhat frustrated, but jump in, try it and see what you
learn!
[ ands19 ] Thank you Stacy. That helps!
[ steph s. ] So much to digest, goodnight and thank you all.
[ Franci ] Good Night everyone!
[ sleepyhead ] kayla or stacy - categories/sub cat/keywords, how
do you set them up in PSE - or better yet - which do you set up?
[ AprilFL ] Fay, I bought mine at WalMart in the photo album section
[ roxannemb ] night!
[ txpns54 ] Thank you, Stacy! This is Big!
[ stacy julian ] "Thank YOU all for being a part of our 2010
session. I am so excited to take this journey will each and every
one of you. I appreciate your trust and willingness to work hard
and try new things. <br />
<br />
goodnight!"
[ TheChickPea ] Thanks everyone and Good-night! :)
[ MelH ] Thanks Stacy...have "procured" quite
a few so will try it. Great forum...so excited.
[ Terri in BC ] CM now has side-loading pages (similar to top-loading)
so you could use those as well to intermingle with pages you've
already done!
[ AprilFL ] goodnight everyone!
[ bcre8uv ] Goodnight all! I'm off to wrangle my kidlets into bed.
:)
[ scrappyangel ] sleepyhead -thanks! I guess since I have never
used 6 I won't know the difference! But I am worried I won't be
able to learn how to tag pictures since my version is older than
the one Kayla will be helping with
[ Annette33 ] Nite all--time to put my girls to bed. I have been
hiding out in their room to do this
[ DINAH ] Thanks Stacy . . . good night everyone!
[ TracyBzz ] See you on the message boards :)
[ MonicaMcNeill ] Goodnight all :)
[ NonaZ ] The Pioneer top-loading can mix in with the pages in the
CM albums.
[ fay ] night. fay
[ sleepyhead ] scrappyangel - they are all pretty similar - stick
with 6 until you're familiar with it - you can download a free trial
of 8 to see if you like the newer features
[ ladotter ] if they are 3-ring, can't you intermix anytype of sheets
in it?
[ ladotter ] if they are 3-ring, can't you intermix anytype of sheets
in it?
[ Sabine H ] Mel H... i'll be using CM albums as well .. have too
much money invested to NOT use them - it'll be a challenger to keep
things organized and to pull stuff apart but I love the quality
- and I already have 6 of them that need filling... we can share
tips as time goes by if you decide to use yours...
[ ladotter ] sorry didn't mean to post twich
[ nessa b. ] night everyone, "see" you at the
next chat!
[ sleepyhead ] any other digi scrappers out there?
[ Terri in BC ] @MelH and Sabine - I'sticking with my CM albums
as well, so we can work on this together.
[ NonaZ ] Sabine: I have CM albums too but have the 3-ring binders
too. I think they are easier to use.
[ Terri in BC ] @sleepyhead - I'm a digital scrapbooker as well
as traditional
[ sleepyhead ] do you still do both?
[ scrappyangel ] sleepyhead - thanks! I will try that. I haven't
even been able to figure out how to sort photos with it yet. The
wasn't even a book inside the box! How do they think I am going
to learn it!
[ ladotter ] I have dabbled in digi
[ Terri in BC ] Oh, yeah! I have way too many printed not too.
[ NonaZ ] I have dabbled in digi too. Need to do more!
[ sleepyhead ] scrappyangel - check out Kayla's video under Digital,
it shows you how there
[ Buglet ] The time must have been changed. Does anyone still on
know when it will be posted? I missed the whole thing! :(
[ sleepyhead ] 2-3 days buglet
[ ladotter ] I love to get my hands in the glue and ink, but it
nice to crank one out digital quickly for gift when needed.
[ Buglet ] Thanks sleepyhead!
[ sleepyhead ] I love digi - especially the undo button! For my
older photos I'm definitely scanning and doing them digi too - just
can't go back :-)
[ Terri in BC ] I love digital and am using it with my current photos.
I swear I'm not printing any more pictures til I figure out what
I'm doing with the ones I have.
[ Buglet ] Oh no! It looks like all of the times have changed. Boy,
7am on Saturday is early! Did she say why it was changed?
[ sleepyhead ] amen to that terri
[ NonaZ ] My schedules says 7 PM PST- I am EST and did not even
know there was a chat until this afternoon.
[ Terri in BC ] I'm only going to scan the heritage ones so I can
make digital books.
[ sleepyhead ] time change is weird, I thought the chat on Saturday
was at 8am PST?
[ italgal ] goodnight, ladies...see you in class!
[ Buglet ] They were all listed at 8pm and 8 am (except for the
odd Saturday) originally.
[ Terri in BC ] I think she had some conflicts so she had to reschedule
some chats. She said to reprint the syllabus
[ NonaZ ] g'night. see you on the boards.
[ sleepyhead ] so what was everyone's category/W? mine was People
We Love & Why
[ sleepyhead ] thanks Terri - I'll be sure to reprint
[ Buglet ] Me too!
[ Terri in BC ] Mine was things
[ Terri in BC ] I'm pretty good with getting the 5 w's when I journal
;o)
[ sleepyhead ] what's your planned layout Terri
[ ladotter ] nite ladies, see ya on the boards,
[ scrappyangel ] sleepyhead - This chat is the first thing I have
done in the classroom so thanks for the tip! I will go look for
that.
[ Terri in BC ] I'm working on the last 3 years in digital and going
through the first 30 years of heritage (only about 500 pictures
there, so not as bad).
[ Terri in BC ] night all
[ Terri in BC ] Anyone staying to chat a bit?
[ sleepyhead ] scrappyangel - click on Digital (at the top of the
page on the albums) it should be there, good luck!
[ sleepyhead ] I'm still here
[ Skier ] i'm staying to chat
[ Buglet ] I'm here too trying to figure this all out.
[ Terri in BC ] @sleepyhead - what's your plan going forward?
[ Terri in BC ] @buglet - we can help you catch up!
[ Terri in BC ] What questions do you have?
[ sleepyhead ] I've been digiscrapping since 2003 so I'm going to
move all my digi layouts to LOM, and leave my paper LOs where they
are - you?
[ Skier ] i'm digital too
[ Buglet ] Thanks Terri! I think it will make more sense whe I see
the transcripts.
[ sleepyhead ] skier - what program?
[ Buglet ] I had questions about the digital frame and thumb drive.
Did she talk about those?
[ sleepyhead ] nope not yet buglet
[ Terri in BC ] At this point, I am not reorganizing my done albums,
but I will fill in the gaps with more "heart"
pages. I use CM so I do have some blank pages to fill.
[ Skier ] PS 6 - tried to upgrade to PS 8 but failed to convert
my catalog
[ Terri in BC ] @skier and sleepyhead - I'm using CM's Storybook
Creator Plus for my digital scrapbooking.
[ Buglet ] Will one of you please give me an idea of what she talked
about? I don't need a play-by-play just the general idea...
[ sleepyhead ] I used to use CM but I kept putting pages in the
'wrong' spot and did some upside down so I gave up
[ Skier ] i use CM stuff for the digi scrapbooking
[ Skier ] i am so frustrated w/ PS 8 that i will be using CM for
organizing too
[ sleepyhead ] buglet - it was more of a flurry of chatting and
random questions - main concept was nobody is 'behind' no need to
catch up, trust the process and do your homework :-)
[ Terri in BC ] To be honest, she just emphasized not to jump ahead
and worry about where to put something. Just work on the homework
and figure out your current scrapbooking method and what catergory/W's
you are missing
[ Buglet ] Thanks sleepyhead and Terri!
[ sleepyhead ] ouch skier - glad you found a program that you like,
that's half the battle
[ Terri in BC ] @skier - don't hesitate to ask me if you need help
with either program.
[ Skier ] yes - really looking fwd to the class
[ Buglet ] For those of you that digiscrap, is it as expensice as
traditional scrapping?
[ Skier ] terri in bc: i had problems converting my catalog from
ps 6 to ps 8.. told me to go to the forum to get steps to debug
[ sleepyhead ] Looking forward to seeing you all on the chats and
MBs - I'm going to start the layout about my Dad... G'nite!
[ Terri in BC ] Digital works out about 1/2 the cost, IMO.
[ Skier ] buglet: i find that digi scrapbooking is a cheaper
[ Buglet ] WOW! Maybe I need to look into that! :)
[ sleepyhead ] way cheaper
[ Terri in BC ] @skier - I can only help with CM's programs -don't
know the others at all.
[ Buglet ] I like "feeling" things though...
[ sleepyhead ] start 'feeling' more dollars in your wallet LOL
[ Buglet ] :) LOL!
[ Skier ] buglet: i agree - i still do other albums- like mini albums
with paper
[ Terri in BC ] That's why I'm still doing traditional for the photos
I have already printed.
[ Buglet ] I wouldn't even know where to start with digital...
[ Terri in BC ] I love the hands-on, but digital is cheaper and
less messy!
[ Skier ] terri in bc: oh sorry about my ps questions
[ sleepyhead ] bye for real this time...
[ scrapbunny ] buglet- do you mean digital organizing or scrapbooking?
[ Buglet ] Terri- it also doesn't ooze into the rest of the house
which sounds good!
[ Buglet ] Scrapbooking
[ Terri in BC ] For an easy-to-use program, check out the tutorials
at creativememories.com for Storybook Creator Plus (disclosure:
I am a consultant but I absolutely love this program - tried others,
but this is one is so easy and inexpensive for all the features
it has.)
[ Skier ] all - bye!
[ Terri in BC ] Bye sleephead! see you in the forums
[ Buglet ] I do need to work on digital organizing though. I have
3 different programs and just found one on my laptop (windows Picture
manager I think) that I really like.
[ scrapbunny ] I can help there :) My Memories Suite is wonderful.
I have some stuff on version 1 on my blog, scrapbunny.blogspot.com
and am working videos for version 2 , especially using it with LOM
[ Buglet ] Terri- the CM program is for digital scrapping, right?
Can you add-on to it?
[ Terri in BC ] Bye, skier. Buglet - Get organized first! Thats'
the most important
[ Scrapbook_Girl ] scrapbunny - Melissa?
[ Buglet ] Um, how organized? :)
[ Terri in BC ] @buglet - it comes with a bunch of free stuff, and
then you can buy additional packages as you need them.
[ Buglet ] Terri- Can you add other scrap kits to it that aren't
CM?
[ scrapbunny ] yep Melissa Ortuno
[ Scrapbook_Girl ] hey girl, it's Krystal, good to see you here
[ Terri in BC ] @buglet - Use your Windows picture manager and the
pre-class assignment from Stacy (sort 3-5 years of pictures into
seasons or quarters, tag the highlights or move them to a highlights
folder).
[ Buglet ] Woo-hoo! I've done that for the most part!
[ Terri in BC ] @buglet - sure can! Lots of free and retail stuff
on the internet, but I have so much from CM I haven't even gone
there yet.
[ scrapbunny ] you can add outside kits to My Memories Suite that's
why I love it. It is by StoryRock and I have used it under 3 name
changes - LifeTimez, Memory Mixer and now My Memories Suite is the
one currently supported by StoryRock
[ Terri in BC ] Got to go now! Bye, all!
[ scrapbunny ] hey :) Krystal how r u?
[ Buglet ] Actaully, I have ?s about the highlights. Were we supposed
to arrange by seasons/quarters or just move the "highlights"
to the quaters folders?
[ Scrapbook_Girl ] I have a headache, trying to translate Kayla's
tutorials for the software I use (Lightroom), think I have it figured
out for the highlight folders. How are you?
[ scrapbunny ] buglet- My workflow is : 1. load images onto computer
into folder named year-month 2. Once I have 3 months worth of photos
I create a hightlight folder named year Q1, year Q2, year Q3 or
year Q4....
[ Buglet ] @scrapbunny- that makes sense. So your highlights folders
are the photos that you think you will scrap?
[ scrapbunny ] step 3. I move the photos I would like to scrapbook
into the quarter folder. step 4. is tagging. I then delete the year-month
folders because if it is not a photo I want to scrapbook in some
way I don't save it
[ Buglet ] One of my problems is that I move almost every picture!
I don't know that I could DELETE! :_) I am just starting to throw
away blurry or dark photos. That is a big step.
[ Scrapbook_Girl ] hi Kayla!
[ scrapbunny ] yes- so I have My Pictures folder then in that there
are 2010-Jan, 2010 Feb, 2009 Q1, 2009 Q2, @009 Q3, 2009 Q4, 2008
Q1 ext. I use quarters instead of seasons because in California
you can't really tell seasons :)
[ Buglet ] Tagging is another area that I am uncertain of. I need
to learn my WPM and see how to do that. Right now all photos have
the number that the camera gives them. That is why I like WPM because
I realized that it organizes by date and names the folders that
way. I also noticed that it has a star rating system which seems
to be in keeping with what SJ recommends.
[ scrapbunny ] I'm the same way since I delete most bad photos right
on my camera after taking them. by the time I upload they are mainly
ones I want
[ Buglet ] LOL! I miss CA (well, I mean that I miss the sun)!
[ scrapbunny ] it has been super rainy here but only 50's 60's :)
[ Buglet ] I 'm not sure how SJ does seasons since winter spans
Dec - Feb so it falls in two different years, right?
[ Buglet ] scrapsbunny- only?! It has been 30-40s here. I'm thankful
that there hasn't been much snow this year.
[ scrapbunny ] Krystal-is this your first time in LOM? are you still
doing any scrapbook business besides scrapgirl?
[ scrapbunny ] that is another reason to use quarters instead. quarter
1 is Jan, Feb, MArch; Quarter 2 is April, May, June; Quarter 3 is
July, Aug, Sep and Quarter 4 is Oct, Nov, Dec
[ Buglet ] That's why I chose quarters because it made more sense
to me than seasons. Did Stacy mention anything about that?
[ scrapbunny ] I think she does lesson 2 last yr
[ Buglet ] Thanks scrapbunny. I am going to check out the other
areas. See you on the next chat!
[ scrapbunny ] night
