I have a photo wall in our family room which is part of our kitchen. It is a wall with approx. 20 multi sized frames, all different but all brown, some light, some darker with pics of our extended family. At the top, there is a giant wall rub on saying: " HOME is where our story begins" We get lots of comments and people love to look at the pics and I love the versatility of being able to add in new pics. Still have room for another frame or 2 :)

OMG! I'm in the same predicament. We took all our pictures off our walls to paint and now it's time to put them back together, however, we are putting them in a different place and we didn't like the prior arrangement we had anyhow. I'm so glad you brought this up! I've gathered some ideas and can't wait to hang. Sorry I couldn't be of help to you though b/c I like them all!

We have a family photo wall in our long hall and we love it. The pictures change but not too often as they represent many years of family history. Then in our bedroom I have a "first date" wall with photos of my husband and I when we first met and those of both of our sets of parents. It is an easy and non-intrusive way to display the photos that we love.
I have framed drawings and art work that my kids have done since they were little. All the frames are different colours and sizes and they were custom matched to the art work. I hung them up after first laying out everything on the floor to see how they worked best together and then just hung them on the wall! I think it looks awesome and people are impressed and inspired to do the same with their kids' stuff. I plan on doing something similar in my kitchen with pictures of people eating.

For my wall it was really important to me to use the same frame type/color for all of my pictures regardless of size. I have since decided that it would have been enough for the color to be the same. My wall prior to doing this looked like a potpourri thrown on the wall. You need to decide on a unifying factor before you hang anything! And then I hung all of my picture at the same height or no higher than my given height. Doing a gallery wall is so much like doing a scrapbook layout. You need to move the individual pieces around until you find your own personal AHA! and don't be afraid to add "embellishments" like initials or quotes. But everything needs to look like it was intentional.
