Photography Tips & Tricks with Tara

Taking photos is more than just capturing the here and now.  It's a way to look back on memories, events and emotions.  It's a free ride to the past.  Today on the blog, Tara McKernin is here with us to share some of her photography tips and tricks to help you take those cherished photos!

Photography is your visual story, and I love a good story don’t you? I am a big believer in the best camera being the one you have with you. My everyday images are captured with either my DSLR or my Samsung Galaxy S4. I love that both of these give me a variety of control over my images. In my class Pocket Prompts 2, many of the photography prompt images were shot with my phone.

One of my favourite tips when shooting with my phone is using window light. In my home I have large patio doors and a large window kitty corner to each other by my kitchen table. This is a great spot, but sometimes all the light works against you.

In this first image, the patio doors were to my right and the window straight ahead. I shot this with my Samsung and as you can see the indoor backlight from the window leaves them darkly lit even with the light for the patio doors.

When I move to the patio doors and have that light behind me but facing the children it lights them up. This removes the dark shadows that the indoor backlight was casting.

Then I moved to the window side and stood above the children and shot down at them with the door now to my left. This gave a well lit overhead shot.

Hope this tip helps you use the window light in home a little more! Stop by and join me in Pocket Prompts 2 for some more photography and journaling prompts for your Project Life album.

Thanks for the great tips. My house is very dark and I hate using the flash and getting weird unnatural light. It's amazing what happens when I open the blinds to let that natural light in.

It's amazing what moving your position in relation to the natural light can do!
